    Parikh and Wittgenstein

    A survey of Parikhā€™s philosophical appropriations of Wittgensteinian themes, placed into historical context against the backdrop of Turingā€™s famous paper, ā€œOn computable numbers, with an application to the Entscheidungsproblemā€ (Turing in Proc Lond Math Soc 2(42): 230ā€“265, 1936/1937) and its connections with Wittgenstein and the foundations of mathematics. Characterizing Parikhā€™s contributions to the interaction between logic and philosophy at its foundations, we argue that his work gives the lie to recent presentations of Wittgensteinā€™s so-called metaphilosophy (e.g., Horwich in Wittgensteinā€™s metaphilosophy. Oxford University Press, Oxford, 2012) as a kind of ā€œdead endā€ quietism. From early work on the idea of a feasibility in arithmetic (Parikh in J Symb Log 36(3):494ā€“508, 1971) and vagueness (Parikh in Logic, language and method. Reidel, Boston, pp 241ā€“261, 1983) to his more recent program in social software (Parikh in Advances in modal logic, vol 2. CSLI Publications, Stanford, pp 381ā€“400, 2001a), Parikhā€™s work encompasses and touches upon many foundational issues in epistemology, philosophy of logic, philosophy of language, and value theory. But it expresses a unified philosophical point of view. In his most recent work, questions about public and private languages, opportunity spaces, strategic voting, non-monotonic inference and knowledge in literature provide a remarkable series of suggestions about how to present issues of fundamental importance in theoretical computer science as serious philosophical issues

    Improving (Software) Patent Quality Through the Administrative Process

    The available evidence indicates that patent quality, particularly in the area of software, needs improvement. This Article argues that even an agency as institutionally constrained as the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (ā€œPTOā€) could implement a portfolio of pragmatic, cost-effective quality improvement strategies. The argument in favor of these strategies draws upon not only legal theory and doctrine but also new data from a PTO software examination unit with relatively strict practices. Strategies that resolve around Section 112 of the patent statute could usefully be deployed at the initial examination stage. Other strategies could be deployed within the new post-issuance procedures available to the agency under the America Invents Act. Notably, although the strategies the Article discusses have the virtue of being neutral as to technology, they are likely to have a very significant practical impact in the area of software

    Building knowledge intensive Case-Based Reasoning applications requires tools that support this on-going process between domain experts and knowledge engineers. In this paper we will introduce how the open source tool myCBR 3 allows for flexible knowledge elicitation and formalisation form CBR and non CBR experts. We detail on myCBR 3 's versatile approach to similarity modelling and will give an overview of the Knowledge Engineering workbench, providing the tools for the modelling process. We underline our presentation with three case studies of knowledge modelling for technical diagnosis and recommendation systems using myCBR 3

    The aim of this volume is to open up new perspectives and to raise new research questions about a unified approach to truth, modalities, and propositional attitudes. The volumeā€™s essays are grouped thematically around different research questions. The first theme concerns the tension between the theoretical role of the truth predicate in semantics and its expressive function in language. The second theme of the volume concerns the interaction of truth with modal and doxastic notions. The third theme covers higher-order solutions to the semantic and modal paradoxes, providing an alternative to first-order solutions embraced in the first two themes.
