    Selected approaches and frameworks to carry out genomic data provision and analysis on the cloud

    While High Performance Computing clouds allow researchers to process large amounts of genomic data, complex resource and software configuration tasks must be carried out beforehand. The current trend exposes applications and data as services, simplifying access to clouds. This paper examines commonly used cloud-based genomic analysis services, introduces the approach of exposing data as services and proposes two new solutions (HPCaaS and Uncinus) which aim to automate service development, deployment process and data provision. By comparing and contrasting these solutions, we identify key mechanisms of service creation, execution and data access required to support non-computing specialists employing clouds

    Cloudlet computing : recent advances, taxonomy, and challenges

    A cloudlet is an emerging computing paradigm that is designed to meet the requirements and expectations of the Internet of things (IoT) and tackle the conventional limitations of a cloud (e.g., high latency). The idea is to bring computing resources (i.e., storage and processing) to the edge of a network. This article presents a taxonomy of cloudlet applications, outlines cloudlet utilities, and describes recent advances, challenges, and future research directions. Based on the literature, a unique taxonomy of cloudlet applications is designed. Moreover, a cloudlet computation offloading application for augmenting resource-constrained IoT devices, handling compute-intensive tasks, and minimizing the energy consumption of related devices is explored. This study also highlights the viability of cloudlets to support smart systems and applications, such as augmented reality, virtual reality, and applications that require high-quality service. Finally, the role of cloudlets in emergency situations, hostile conditions, and in the technological integration of future applications and services is elaborated in detail. © 2013 IEEE

    Scheduling and efficient energy utilization in cloud system

    Cloud computing is an emerging topic on software and distributed computing based on Internet, which means users can access storages and applications from remote servers by web browsers or other fixed or mobile terminals. In a cloud framework different services such as servers, storage in the form of data as well as Big data, resources etc are given to a management's computers and different devices on interest through the Internet. Multiple clients want to run their jobs or cloudlets in the cloud at a particular instant of time. The tasks are executed depending on the number of processors available and the scheduling policy of the cloud. In a cloud simulation software such as CloudSim a two level scheduling in the form of Space-shared and Time-shared can be used in collaboration with First Come First Serve(FCFS). An efficient way of job scheduling in cloud is to assign weightage or priority to the various parameters coming along with the job also taking into consideration the priority value set by the client to the task. In this thesis an attempt has been made to develop an efficient priority algorithm for the jobs running in the cloud. Also an attempt has been made to reduce the energy consumption at a particular over utilized node as well as switching idle nodes to the sleep mode thereby optimizing resource usage and reducing energy consumption

Uurimistööd näitavad, et 56% tehnoloogia valdkonna otsustajatest uurivad erinevaid võimalusi pilvelahenduste kasutamiseks. Eel-toodu tõttu on oluline mõista erinevaid pilveteenuste kasutusvõimalusi, ärivajadusi ja investeeringuid. Antud magistritöö hindab paljusid kasutegureid, mida pilverakenduste ja pilvearvutuse kasutamine pakub äritegevusele. Pilvearvutus pakub paindliku, taskuko-hast ja end tõestanud platvormi ärilahenduste ja IT lahenduste loomiseks. Pilvearvutuse kasutamine pakub ettevõtetele harukordset võimalust muuta teenuse pakkumist tõhusa-maks, juhtimist sujuvamaks ning viia IT teenused vastavusse pidevalt muutuvate äriva-jadustega. Pilvearvutuse kasutamine pakub rohkem kui ühe võimaluse ärivaldkondade usaldusväärseks toeks ning ühtlasi tõstab võimekust luua uusi ja innovaatilisi teenuseid. Olemasoleva kirjanduse mittetäielik analüüs toob esile selle, et enne ettevõtetes pilvela-henduste ja pilvearvutuse kasutuselevõttu on väga oluline pöörata tähelepanu kaasneva-tele turvalisuse väljakutsetele. Antud magistritöös on detailselt käsitletud peamisi pil-vandmetöötluse valdkonna turvalisuse probleeme ning töö järeldusena pakutakse välja soovitusi pilve turvalisuse juurutamiseks.Today an estimated 72% of enterprises use at least one cloud application or a percentage of their I.T infrastructure in the cloud. Research shows that 56% of the decision makers in technology are investigating more ways of leveraging the cloud. This makes it impor-tant to understand the different usage plans in cloud service models, business drivers and investments. This thesis measures the myriad benefits of using cloud applications, and the effect of cloud computing on business performance. As will be seen in the the-sis, cloud computing offers a flexible, affordable as well as proven platform for the pro-vision of business and IT services via the internet. Cloud computing provides companies with the rare opportunity of strengthening their efficiencies in service delivery, mana-gement streamlining, and the aligning of IT services with the ever changing business needs. In more ways than one, cloud computing provides solid support for business functions, alongside increasing the capacity for the development of new as well as inno-vative services. A non-exhaustive review of the existing literature revels that the security challenges faced by enterprises during cloud adoption and interoperability have to be addressed before the implementation of cloud computing. In this thesis, we provide a detailed overview of the key security issues in the realm of cloud computing and con-clude with the recommendations on the implementation of cloud security

    Cloud Computing for Next-Generation Sequencing Data Analysis

    High-throughput next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies have evolved rapidly and are reshaping the scope of genomics research. The substantial decrease in the cost of NGS techniques in the past decade has led to its rapid adoption in biological research and drug development. Genomics studies of large populations are producing a huge amount of data, giving rise to computational issues around the storage, transfer, and analysis of the data. Fortunately, cloud computing has recently emerged as a viable option to quickly and easily acquire the computational resources for large-scale NGS data analyses. Some cloud-based applications and resources have been developed specifically to address the computational challenges of working with very large volumes of data generated by NGS technology. In this chapter, we will review some cloud-based systems and solutions for NGS data analysis, discuss the practical hurdles and limitations in cloud computing, including data transfer and security, and share the lessons we learned from the implementation of Rainbow, a cloud-based tool for large-scale genome sequencing data analysis

    Cloud Computing offers virtualized computing, storage, and networking resources, over the Internet, to organizations and individual users in a completely dynamic way. These cloud resources are cheaper, easier to manage, and more elastic than sets of local, physical, ones. This encourages customers to outsource their applications and services to the cloud. The migration of both data and applications outside the administrative domain of customers into a shared environment imposes transversal, functional problems across distinct platforms and technologies. This article provides a contemporary discussion of the most relevant functional problems associated with the current evolution of Cloud Computing, mainly from the network perspective. The paper also gives a concise description of Cloud Computing concepts and technologies. It starts with a brief history about cloud computing, tracing its roots. Then, architectural models of cloud services are described, and the most relevant products for Cloud Computing are briefly discussed along with a comprehensive literature review. The paper highlights and analyzes the most pertinent and practical network issues of relevance to the provision of high-assurance cloud services through the Internet, including security.
