    Get PDF
    Given that the concept of PSS is beginning to 'catch on' and gain attention, it is time for UNEP to contribute to, and influence the progress of PSS, to ensure that in concept and application it incorporates the idea of sustainability. In this context its potential is not generally understood by the public and private sectors or civil society. This booklet is intended to contribute to the dissemination and the discussion of the PSS concept as a promising approach to sustainability. The ultimate goal must be to achieve Sustainable Product-Service Systems. This UNEP publication is targeted at industry and government, academia and civil society to explain PSS – their potential benefits and limitations – in the sustainability context – using real company examples. To prepare this booklet, UNEP has drawn on the knowledge and experience of PSS experts to flesh out the concept of a sustainable PSS, to collect case studies of PSS in practice, to begin to document both its benefits and the hurdles which need to be overcome in its application, and to suggest ways forward in its development

    Abstract: In recent times, largely as a result of advancements in information technology and changing consumer needs, traditional methods of doing business are being challenged by the emergence of software platforms that enable individuals to share goods and services at a given cost. Collaborative consumption also referred to as shared economy, entails individuals offering or renting underutilized assets or services to other individuals usually at a specified price. Enabled by the internet, it is now possible for these assets and services to be disaggregated as peer-to-peer services. The collaborative economy has increasingly grown in recent years to become an integral part of modern society where millions of consumers are utilizing it worldwide. It has raked in billions of dollars in revenue worldwide and is expected to grow substantially. Sharing economy companies such as Uber and Airbnb have grown enough to pose a threat to traditional business models. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the shared economy practices as well the concerns it has brought about. In emerging markets the sharing economy for instance seen to have a higher potential in revenue generation though there has been little study conducted. This may prompt further research in investigating the emerging market potential in exploiting the sharing economy in terms of revenue generation while addressing its concerns

London is a globally recognised hub for technology, design and creative genius. While many cities around the world can claim to be hubs for technology entrepreneurship, London’s distinctive potential lies in the successful fusion of world-leading technology with world-leading design and creativity. As innovation thrives at the edge, where better to innovate than across the boundaries of these two clusters and cultures? This booklet tells the story of Fusion’s innovation journey, its partners and its unique business support. Most importantly of all it tells stories of companies that, having worked with London Fusion, have innovated and grown. We hope that it will inspire others to follow and build on our beginnings.European Regional Development Fund 2007-13

    Improving supply chain efficiency through wholesale price renegotiation

    In a decentralized supply chain, double marginalization is an important source of inefficiency. We suggest in this paper a simple mechanism to reduce it that uses a wholesale price contract and renegotiation. Our mechanism only requires repeated interaction, and rational behavior from the players. Specifically, over T rounds of negotiation, the supplier proposes different prices in each round, and the buyer places orders at the quoted price. Even though prices are decreasing in time, the buyer places a positive order, to force the supplier to reduce its price in the following round. This interaction results in higher profits for both supplier and buyer. We solve the buyer and supplier problems and show that, as T increases, supply chain efficiency tends to 100%, and the sub-optimality gap decreases with 1/T. Finally, we discuss how these results can be applied to design negotiation processes.strategic customer; dynamic pricing; supply chain;

    An Analysis of the Changing Competitive Landscape in the Hotel Industry Regarding Airbnb

    This thesis analyzes the competition between hotels and Airbnb in San Francisco. Airbnb is an internet platform that allows hosts to rent shared space, private rooms or homes to tourists. This study identifies the affect Airbnb has on hotels, workers, renters, neighborhoods, and tax revenue. Interviews and research was engaged with travel industry professionals. Hoteliers were found to be apathetic about the competition between hotels and Airbnb. Airbnb can be a meaningful experience between hosts and tourists. Budget travelers might not travel if not for low Airbnb rates. Airbnb rooms supplement hotel inventory during extraordinary events. This utopian view of Airbnb seems to overcome the dark sides; evidenced by rising apartment rental rates and declining inventory. Pressures are placed on working class neighborhoods driving out the local workforce for high rate tourists. To date, Airbnb has defeated efforts to be effectively regulated. Unregulated conversions of residential to hotel use is a safety concern. San Francisco Ordinance 218-14 was passed to legalize and regulate Airbnb; however 218-14 is unenforceable. California Senator McGuire authored SB 593: The Thriving Communities and Sharing Economy Act to empower regulation of Airbnb. SB 593 has not been passed yet by the California Senate. Until tax payments, legal, regulatory, safety codes, and compliance issues are addressed the majority of Airbnb will be operating illegally with an unfair competitive advantage over hotels
