    Data Analytics and Machine Learning to Enhance the Operational Visibility and Situation Awareness of Smart Grid High Penetration Photovoltaic Systems

    Electric utilities have limited operational visibility and situation awareness over grid-tied distributed photovoltaic systems (PV). This will pose a risk to grid stability when the PV penetration into a given feeder exceeds 60% of its peak or minimum daytime load. Third-party service providers offer only real-time monitoring but not accurate insights into system performance and prediction of productions. PV systems also increase the attack surface of distribution networks since they are not under the direct supervision and control of the utility security analysts. Six key objectives were successfully achieved to enhance PV operational visibility and situation awareness: (1) conceptual cybersecurity frameworks for PV situation awareness at device, communications, applications, and cognitive levels; (2) a unique combinatorial approach using LASSO-Elastic Net regularizations and multilayer perceptron for PV generation forecasting; (3) applying a fixed-point primal dual log-barrier interior point method to expedite AC optimal power flow convergence; (4) adapting big data standards and capability maturity models to PV systems; (5) using K-nearest neighbors and random forests to impute missing values in PV big data; and (6) a hybrid data-model method that takes PV system deration factors and historical data to estimate generation and evaluate system performance using advanced metrics. These objectives were validated on three real-world case studies comprising grid-tied commercial PV systems. The results and conclusions show that the proposed imputation approach improved the accuracy by 91%, the estimation method performed better by 75% and 10% for two PV systems, and the use of the proposed forecasting model improved the generalization performance and reduced the likelihood of overfitting. The application of primal dual log-barrier interior point method improved the convergence of AC optimal power flow by 0.7 and 0.6 times that of the currently used deterministic models. Through the use of advanced performance metrics, it is shown how PV systems of different nameplate capacities installed at different geographical locations can be directly evaluated and compared over both instantaneous as well as extended periods of time. The results of this dissertation will be of particular use to multiple stakeholders of the PV domain including, but not limited to, the utility network and security operation centers, standards working groups, utility equipment, and service providers, data consultants, system integrator, regulators and public service commissions, government bodies, and end-consumers

    University education rarely focuses its attention and imagination on teaching students how to turn a vision into reality; how to design, develop, and lead social change organizations. The author co-created the Social Entrepreneurship Collaboratory (SE Lab) at Stanford University and then Harvard University as a model educational program designed to achieve this goal. The SE Lab is a Silicon Valley influenced incubator where student teams create and develop innovative pilot projects for US and international social sector initiatives. The lab combines academic theory, frameworks, and traditional research with intensive field work, action research, peer support and learning, and participation of domain experts and social entrepreneurship practitioners. It also provides students an opportunity to collaborate on teams to develop business plans for their initiatives and to compete for awards and recognition in the marketplace of ideas. Students in the SE Lab have created innovative organizations serving many different social causes, including fighting AIDS in Africa, promoting literacy in Mexico, combating the conditions for terrorism using micro-finance in the Palestinian territories, and confronting gender inequality using social venture capital to empower women in Afghanistan

    e-Navigation and Electronic Charting: Implications for Hydrographic Community

    e-Navigation is a recent IMO initiative that aims to integrate existing/new shipboard and shore-based navigational tools into an “all embracing” system. Defined as: “... the harmonised collection, integration, exchange, presentation and analysis of maritime information onboard and ashore by electronic means to enhance berth to berth navigation and related services, for safety and security at sea and protection of the marine environment” the goal of e-Navigation is to provide an infrastructure that will enable seamless information transfer onboard ship, between ships, ship-to-shore, and between shore authorities. Core elements include high-integrity electronic positioning, electronic navigational charts (ENCs) and improved system functionality towards reducing human error. In particular, this means actively engaging the mariner in the process of navigation while preventing distraction and overburdening. There are two main challenges in going from concept to implementation. 1) Ensuring the availability of all components of the system and using them effectively in order to simplify the display of crucial navigation-related information. 2) Incorporating new technologies in a structured way, while ensuring that their use is compliant with the existing navigational communication technologies and services. To date, the primary focus of IHO Member States has been to complete ENC coverage for major shipping routes.     NASA pyrotechnically actuated systems program

    The Office of Safety and Mission Quality initiated a Pyrotechnically Actuated Systems (PAS) Program in FY-92 to address problems experienced with pyrotechnically actuated systems and devices used both on the ground and in flight. The PAS Program will provide the technical basis for NASA's projects to incorporate new technological developments in operational systems. The program will accomplish that objective by developing/testing current and new hardware designs for flight applications and by providing a pyrotechnic data base. This marks the first applied pyrotechnic technology program funded by NASA to address pyrotechnic issues. The PAS Program has been structured to address the results of a survey of pyrotechnic device and system problems with the goal of alleviating or minimizing their risks. Major program initiatives include the development of a Laser Initiated Ordnance System, a pyrotechnic systems data base, NASA Standard Initiator model, a NASA Standard Linear Separation System and a NASA Standard Gas Generator.
