Using empirical studies to mitigate symbol overload in iStar extensions
UID/CEC/04516/2019Modelling languages are frequently extended to include new constructs to be used together with the original syntax. New constructs may be proposed by adding textual information, such as UML stereotypes, or by creating new graphical representations. Thus, these new symbols need to be expressive and proposed in a careful way to increase the extension’s adoption. A method to create symbols for the original constructs of a modelling language was proposed and has been used to create the symbols when a new modelling language is designed. We argue this method can be used to recommend new symbols for the extension’s constructs. However, it is necessary to make some adjustments since the new symbols will be used with the existing constructs of the modelling language original syntax. In this paper, we analyse the usage of this adapted method to propose symbols to mitigate the occurrence of overloaded symbols in the existing iStar extensions. We analysed the existing iStar extensions in an SLR and identified the occurrence of symbol overload among the existing constructs. We identified a set of fifteen overloaded symbols in existing iStar extensions. We used these concepts with symbol overload in a multi-stage experiment that involved users in the visual notation design process. The study involved 262 participants, and its results revealed that most of the new graphical representations were better than those proposed by the extensions, with regard to semantic transparency. Thus, the new representations can be used to mitigate this kind of conflict in iStar extensions. Modelling Requirements for Content Recommendation Systems
This paper addresses the modelling of requirements for a content
Recommendation System (RS) for Online Social Networks (OSNs). On OSNs, a user
switches roles constantly between content generator and content receiver. The
goals and softgoals are different when the user is generating a post, as
opposed as replying to a post. In other words, the user is generating instances
of different entities, depending on the role she has: a generator generates
instances of a "post", while the receiver generates instances of a "reply".
Therefore, we believe that when addressing Requirements Engineering (RE) for
RS, it is necessary to distinguish these roles clearly.
We aim to model an essential dynamic on OSN, namely that when a user creates
(posts) content, other users can ignore that content, or themselves start
generating new content in reply, or react to the initial posting. This dynamic
is key to designing OSNs, because it influences how active users are, and how
attractive the OSN is for existing, and to new users. We apply a well-known
Goal Oriented RE (GORE) technique, namely i-star, and show that this language
fails to capture this dynamic, and thus cannot be used alone to model the
problem domain. Hence, in order to represent this dynamic, its relationships to
other OSNs' requirements, and to capture all relevant information, we suggest
using another modelling language, namely Petri Nets, on top of i-star for the
modelling of the problem domain. We use Petri Nets because it is a tool that is
used to simulate the dynamic and concurrent activities of a system and can be
used by both practitioners and theoreticians.Comment: 28 pages, 7 figure
A multiple criteria route recommendation system
The work to be developed in this dissertation is part of a larger project called Sustainable
Tourism Crowding (STC), which motivation is based on two negative impacts caused by the
tourism overload that happens, particularly, in the historic neighborhoods of Lisbon.
The goal of this dissertation is then to mitigate those problems: reduce the tourist burden of
points of interest in a city that, in addition to the degradation of the tourist experience, causes
sustainability problems in different aspects (environmental, social and local).
Within the scope of this dissertation, the implementation of one component of a recommendation
system is the proposed solution. It is based on a multi-criteria algorithm for recommending
pedestrian routes that minimize the passage through more crowded places and maximizes
the visit to sustainable points of interest. These routes will be personalized for each user, as they
consider their explicit preferences (e.g. time, budget, physical effort) and several constraints
taken from other microservices that are part of the global system architecture mentioned above
(e.g. weather conditions, crowding levels, points of interest, sustainability).
We conclude it is possible to develop a microservice that recommend personalized routes
and communicate with other microservices that are part of the global system architecture mentioned
above. The analysis of the experimental data from the recommendation system, allows
us to conclude that it is possible to obtain a more balanced distribution of the tourist visit, by
increasing the visit to more sustainable places of interest and avoiding crowded paths.O trabalho a desenvolver nesta dissertação insere-se num projeto de maior dimensão denominado
Sustainable Tourism Crowding (STC), cuja motivação assenta, essencialmente, em dois
impactos negativos provocados pela sobrecarga turística que se verifica, nomeadamente, nos
bairros históricos de Lisboa.
O objetivo desta dissertação é, então, mitigar esses problemas: reduzir a sobrecarga turística
dos pontos de interesse mais visitados numa cidade que, além da degradação da experiência
turística, causa problemas de sustentabilidade em diversos aspetos (ambiental, social e local).
No âmbito desta dissertação, a implementação de um componente de um sistema de recomendação
é a solução proposta. Baseia-se num algoritmo multicritério de recomendação de
percursos pedonais que minimiza a passagem por locais mais apinhados e maximizam a visita
a pontos de interesse mais sustentáveis. Essas rotas serão personalizadas para cada utilizador,
pois consideram as suas preferências (por exemplo, tempo, orçamento, nível de esforço físico) e
várias restrições retiradas de outros microsserviços que fazem parte da arquitetura do sistema
global mencionado acima (por exemplo, condições meteorológicas, níveis de apinhamento, pontos
de interesse, níveis de sustentabilidade).
Concluímos que é possível desenvolver um microsserviço que recomenda rotas personalizadas
e que comunica com outros microsserviços que fazem parte da arquitetura global do
sistema mencionada acima. A análise dos dados experimentais do sistema de recomendação,
permite-nos concluir que é possível obter uma distribuição mais equilibrada da visita turística,
aumentando a visita a pontos de interesse mais sustentáveis e evitando percursos mais
apinhados
A Pattern-Based Approach to Scaffold the IT Infrastructure Design Process
Context. The design of Information Technology (IT) infrastructures is a challenging task
since it implies proficiency in several areas that are rarely mastered by a single person,
thus raising communication problems among those in charge of conceiving, deploying,
operating and maintaining/managing them. Most IT infrastructure designs are based
on proprietary models, known as blueprints or product-oriented architectures, defined by vendors to facilitate the configuration of a particular solution, based upon their services and products portfolio. Existing blueprints can be facilitators in the design of solutions for a particular vendor or technology. However, since organizations may have infrastructure components from multiple vendors, the use of blueprints aligned with commercial product(s) may cause integration problems among these components and can lead to vendor lock-in. Additionally, these blueprints have a short lifecycle, due to their association with product version(s) or a specific technology, which hampers their usage as a tool for the reuse of IT infrastructure knowledge.
Objectives. The objectives of this dissertation are (i) to mitigate the inability to reuse
knowledge in terms of best practices in the design of IT infrastructures and, (ii) to simplify the usage of this knowledge, making the IT infrastructure designs simpler, quicker and better documented, while facilitating the integration of components from different vendors and minimizing the communication problems between teams.
Method. We conducted an online survey and performed a systematic literature review
to support the state of the art and to provide evidence that this research was relevant
and had not been conducted before. A model-driven approach was also used for the
formalization and empirical validation of well-formedness rules to enhance the overall
process of designing IT infrastructures. To simplify and support the design process, a
modeling tool, including its abstract and concrete syntaxes was also extended to include the main contributions of this dissertation.
Results. We obtained 123 responses to the online survey. Their majority were from
people with more than 15 years experience with IT infrastructures. The respondents
confirmed our claims regarding the lack of formality and documentation problems on
knowledge transfer and only 19% considered that their current practices to represent IT Infrastructures are efficient. A language for modeling IT Infrastructures including an abstract and concrete syntax is proposed to address the problem of informality in their
design. A catalog of IT Infrastructure patterns is also proposed to allow expressing best
practices in their design. The modeling tool was also evaluated and according to 84%
of the respondents, this approach decreases the effort associated with IT infrastructure
design and 89% considered that the use of a repository with infrastructure patterns, will
help to improve the overall quality of IT infrastructures representations. A controlled
experiment was also performed to assess the effectiveness of both the proposed language and the pattern-based IT infrastructure design process supported by the tool.
Conclusion. With this work, we contribute to improve the current state of the art in
the design of IT infrastructures replacing the ad-hoc methods with more formal ones to
address the problems of ambiguity, traceability and documentation, among others, that

An Approach to Guide Users Towards Less Revealing Internet Browsers
When browsing the Internet, HTTP headers enable both clients and servers send extra data in their requests or responses such as the User-Agent string. This string contains information related to the sender’s device, browser, and operating system. Previous research has shown that there are numerous privacy and security risks result from exposing sensitive information in the User-Agent string. For example, it enables device and browser fingerprinting and user tracking and identification. Our large analysis of thousands of User-Agent strings shows that browsers differ tremendously in the amount of information they include in their User-Agent strings. As such, our work aims at guiding users towards using less exposing browsers. In doing so, we propose to assign an exposure score to browsers based on the information they expose and vulnerability records. Thus, our contribution in this work is as follows: first, provide a full implementation that is ready to be deployed and used by users. Second, conduct a user study to identify the effectiveness and limitations of our proposed approach. Our implementation is based on using more than 52 thousand unique browsers. Our performance and validation analysis show that our solution is accurate and efficient. The source code and data set are publicly available and the solution has been deployed
