A Methodological Demonstration of Set-Theoretical Approach to Social Media Maturity Models Using Necessary Condition Analysis

    Get PDF
Despite being widely accepted and applied across research domains, maturity models have been criticized for lacking academic rigor, especially methodologically rigorous and empirically grounded or tested maturity models are quite rare. Attempting to close this gap, we adopt a set-theoretic approach by applying the Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA) technique to derive maturity stages and stage boundaries conditions. The ontology is to view stages (boundaries) in maturity models as a collection of necessary condition. Using social media maturity data, we demonstrate the strength of our approach and evaluate some of arguments presented by previous conceptual focused social media maturity models

The massive growth in the amount of data that companies, organizations, and society have been compelled to deal with, reinforces the need for studies on subjects such as business intelligence, business intelligence and analytics, and big data. Although certain aspects of these themes are already established in research, there is still a lack of understanding and consensus on how to combine variables to encourage better use of data. In this study, we propose a comprehensive conceptualization of a new construct -- analytical competence (ACOMP) -- comprised of three dimensions grounded in the business intelligence and analytics literature and absorptive capacity theory. To properly develop the ACOMP scale, we followed a six-step procedure and collected data from 82 organizations. We validated a nomological model where the ACOMP scale was tested as an antecedent of organizational performance regarding making decisions and learning. The results of this study provide support for ACOMP as a valid and reliable scale that is useful for both academic and managerial purposes

Towards a Pay-Per-X Maturity Model for Equipment Manufacturing Companies

    Get PDF
This Research-in-Progress paper presents a preliminary design of a maturity model for assessing the internal readiness of business-to-business equipment manufacturing companies implementing new, service-based pay-per-x (PPX) business models. By using existing maturity model design guidelines, action design research methodology as well as PPX-related literature and analogous maturity models in fields such as servitization, digitization, Industry 4.0, data-driven manufacturing and product-service systems, this paper explains how the creation of a maturity model could enable a systematic approach to implementing the new PPX business models. The paper will also provide the basis for the PPX maturity model development and validation in the future, while aiding the equipment manufacturing companies in assessing their current as-is situation in the most critical areas of PPX implementation as well as formulating a roadmap towards the implementation.publishedVersionPeer reviewe

Measuring the maturity of the business intelligence and analytics initiative of a large Norwegian university

Maturity models of Business Intelligence and Analytics (BIA) have been previously used to assess BIA development progress in organizations in many sectors, such as healthcare and business. However, there is a lack of studies reporting up-to-date knowledge on applying maturity assessment in Higher Education Institutions (HEI). It remains unclear precisely to what extent and how HEI employ maturity assessment and the benefits of such exercises. This paper addresses this gap by reporting a case study at a large Norwegian university. A domain-specific maturity model is used as a lens to observe and reflect on the BIA implementation at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. This paper reports the assessment results and discusses the implications of the maturity assessment. The findings and discussions in the case can cater to a broader audience of BIA practitioners and researchers, contributing to understanding the value and adoption dynamics of BIA in Higher Education.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Understanding impact of business intelligence to organizational performance using cluster analysis: does culture matter?

    Get PDF
Business intelligence is an approach that includes processes and systems for transformation of the raw data into meaningful and useful information which enables effective, systematic and purposeful analysis of an organization and its competitive environment. This paper aims to analyze the impact of the level of business intelligence maturity to organizational performance of the company. Moreover, since there is a rising awareness among practitioners of the role of the organizational culture for the successful functioning of the company, the role of the organizational culture is taken into consideration in this research. In order to meet the aim of the paper, a survey has been conducted. Data has been collected through questionnaires on a sample of 177 Croatian and Slovenian companies and analyzed by means of the cluster analysis. The analysis identified two clusters. The results of the cross-tabulation analysis of the clusters reveal statistically significant differences in terms of the company turnover and dominant organizational culture between them

This paper addresses the growing prominence of Artificial Intelligence in B2B software investing and the pressing need for effective AI implementation. Despite the immense potential, evidence shows that most AI initiatives fail. To bridge this gap, this study introduces a B2B sales AI maturity model, leveraging the structured framework of maturity models to help firms prepare for AI adoption. Drawing from the Design Science Research process, the study elaborates on the development of the maturity model through iterative stages, encompassing, for example, a literature review, expert interviews, and case studies. The goal is to enable firms to assess their AI implementation maturity and identify areas for enhancement to effectively integrate AI into their sales functions. The paper highlights the need for a robust framework tailored to AI in B2B sales and highlights the contributions and potential impact of the research on reshaping B2B sales practices in the AI era

Maturity Models Architecture: A large systematic mapping

    Get PDF
Maturity models are widespread in research and in particular, IT practitioner communities. However, theoretically sound, methodologically rigorous and empirically validated maturity models are quite rare.  This systematic mapping paper focuses on the challenges faced during the development of maturity models. More specifically, it explores the literature on maturity models and standard guidelines to develop maturity models, the challenges identified and solutions proposed.  Our systematic mapping  revealed over six hundred articles on maturity models. Extant literature reveals that researchers have primarily focused on developing new maturity models pertaining to domain-specific problems and/or new enterprise technologies. We find rampant re-use of the design structure of widely adopted models such as Nolan’s Stage of Growth Model, Crosby’s Grid, and Capability Maturity Model (CMM). We also identify three dominant views of maturity models and provide guidelines for various approaches to constructing maturity models with a standard vocabulary. We finally propose using process theories and configurational approaches to address the main theoretical criticisms with regard to maturity models and conclude with some recommendations for maturity model developers

A Set Theoretical Approach to Maturity Models: Guidelines and Demonstration

    Get PDF
Maturity Model research in IS has been criticized for the lack of theoretical grounding, methodological rigor, empirical validations, and ignorance of multiple and non-linear paths to maturity. To address these criticisms, this paper proposes a novel set-theoretical approach to maturity models characterized by equifinality, multiple conjunctural causation, and case diversity. We prescribe methodological guidelines consisting of a six-step procedure to systematically apply set theoretic methods to conceptualize, develop, and empirically derive maturity models and provide a demonstration of it application on a social media maturity data-set. Specifically, we employ Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA) to identify maturity stage boundaries as necessary conditions and Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) to arrive at multiple configurations that can be equally effective in progressing to higher maturity
