Modeling Sensor Knowledge of a National Hydrologic Information System

    Get PDF
In this paper we describe our experience in modeling and using sensor knowledge of a national hydrologic information system in Spain. We developed a web application called VSAIH supported by a knowledge-based system to analyze sensor data and to generate explanations that help users to make decisions based on hydrologic behavior. In the paper, we describe the characteristics of the infrastructure of hydrologic sensors and the representa-tion we used to model sensor knowledge to provide support to the VSAIH application. We also describe semi-automatic procedures that we applied to construct the final model

Towards a More Employment-Intensive and Pro-Poor Economic Growth in Bolivia

    Get PDF
The reform program and growth pattern exhibited by the Bolivian economy in the last decade did not favour employment creation and consequently not an effective reduction of poverty. During the last decade, those sectors where the bulk of employment is concentrated, presented the lowest growth rates of GDP, labour productivity and real incomes. The present paper analyzes in detail the two sectors where the bulk of employment and poverty is concentrated (agriculture and the urban informal sector) in order to determine the critical constraints to improvements in productivity, employment generation, and reductions in poverty.Employment, Poverty, Growth, Bolivia

    ECLSS advanced automation preliminary requirements

    Get PDF
A description of the total Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) is presented. The description of the hardware is given in a top down format, the lowest level of which is a functional description of each candidate implementation. For each candidate implementation, both its advantages and disadvantages are presented. From this knowledge, it was suggested where expert systems could be used in the diagnosis and control of specific portions of the ECLSS. A process to determine if expert systems are applicable and how to select the expert system is also presented. The consideration of possible problems or inconsistencies in the knowledge or workings in the subsystems is described

Thinking in Terms of System Hierarchies and Velocites. What makes Development Sustainable?

    Get PDF
In order to understand the context for sustainable development policies it is necessary to understand how different rates of evolution and velocities of change within social and ecological systems affect interactions between and the co-evolution of those systems. Sustainable development policies will bear fruit only when we can discuss sustainable development not only of separate interdependent or nested systems in a global hierarchy, but also in relation to their widely varying, but interrelated rates and courses of development and evolution.
