Immersive Learning Research Network
Computer games have now been around for over three decades and the term serious games has been attributed to the use of computer games that are thought to have educational value. Game-based learning (GBL) has been applied in a number of different fields such as medicine, languages and software engineering. Furthermore, serious games can be a very effective as an instructional tool and can assist learning by providing an alternative way of presenting instructions and content on a supplementary level, and can promote student motivation and interest in subject matter resulting in enhanced learning effectiveness. REVLAW (Real and Virtual Reality Law) is a research project that the departments of Law and Computer Science of Westminster University have proposed as a new framework in which law students can explore a real case scenario using Virtual Reality (VR) technology to discover important pieces of evidence from a real-given scenario and make up their mind over the crime case if this is a murder or not. REVLAW integrates the immersion into VR as the perception of being physically present in a non-physical world. The paper presents the prototype framework and the mechanics used to make students focus on the crime case and make the best use of this immersive learning approach
Hardware Interfaces for VR Applications: Evaluation on Prototypes
The advancement of recent developments over the VR with the expansion of new Head Mount Displays (H.M.D.) such as Oculus Rift and Morpheus have opened new challenges in the already active research filed of the industry of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) by exploring new means of communication with the support of the new hardware devices adjustable to body movements and hand position. The paper explores the hardware interactivity and VR H.M.D’s through two games designed to use the latest Oculus Rift SDK technology with alternative methods of hardware communication. A usability evaluation study was conducted with 18 participants and the results presented and discussed
A Mixed Method Approach for Evaluating and Improving the Design of Learning in Puzzle Games
Despite the acknowledgment that learning is a necessary part of all gameplay, the area of Games User Research lacks an established evidence based method through which designers and researchers can understand, assess, and improve how commercial games teach players game-specific skills and information. In this paper, we propose a mixed method procedure that draws together both quantitative and experiential approaches to examine the extent to which players are supported in learning about the game world and mechanics. We demonstrate the method through presenting a case study of the game Portal involving 14 participants, who differed in terms of their gaming expertise. By comparing optimum solutions to puzzles against observed player performance, we illustrate how the method can indicate particular problems with how learning is structured within a game. We argue that the method can highlight where major breakdowns occur and yield design insights that can improve the player experience with puzzle games
Evaluating 2D and 3D serious games: The significance of student-player characteristics
Serious games are gaining ground in all educational levels. Important aspects of their implementation in education are related to their features, their relevance to pedagogy and the learners' views. This quantitative research focused on characteristics of pedagogical departments’ students (gender, scientific background, prior gaming and ICT skills) and factors are considered to affect and shape their learning experience when playing 2D and 3D serious games (immersion, enjoyment, perceived usefulness-knowledge improvement, perceived narratives' adequacy, perceived realism, perceived feedback's adequacy, perceived audiovisual adequacy, perceived relevance to personal interests, perceived goal's clarity, perceived ease of use, adequacy of the learning material and motivation). A total of 542 university students participated in the study. The data analysis revealed that they preferred the 2D game. Their gender, scientific background and ICT skills did not have an impact on their views. On the other hand, students with high game-playing competence seem to have a better learning experience, as their scores in most of the factors were higher compared to the ones with lower game-playing competence. Those results led us to consider other aspects of learners beyond ordinary demographics such as self-regulation, spatial cognition and mental rotation and to examine the evidence that serious games can improve these skills

Tesi
Pelattavuusheuristiikkojen toteutuminen yksinpelattavissa shoot ’em up -videopeleissä
Tiivistelmä. Vaikka videopelien pelaaminen on hyvin suosittua, ei se riitä takaamaan jokaiselle pelinkehittäjälle onnistunutta uraa. Kilpailu pelimarkkinoilla on kovaa ja pelin täytyy kyetä erottumaan positiivisesti muista peleistä. Siksi on tärkeää kehittää arviointimenetelmiä, joilla voidaan mitata pelin laatua. Tässä tutkielmassa keskityttiin tutkimaan heuristista evaluointia shoot ’em up -genren pelien arviointimenetelmänä. Shoot ’em up -genren peleille ei kirjallisuudesta löytynyt genrespesifisiä heuristiikkoja.
dicho sistema, producto o programa.
Gaming and computer science: Bridging the gender-gap
>Magister Scientiae - MScAccording to the literature, women are still unrepresented in the field of
information technology. Although many women study computer science at first
year level, the dropout rate for women—before they graduate—is high, and if
they graduate many decide neither to continue with their studies nor to work in
the field of information technology. Research has shown that women who have
been exposed to computing at some point during their school career or early in
their lives, tend to be more open to choosing a career in computer science and
are in many cases successful at it. The aim of this research is to understand what
factors influence women to choose a career within computer science and to
consider whether gaming would encourage young women to enter the field.
Design Science Research was the methodology employed. It was chosen since an
artefact was developed. For each of the five steps of this methodology a different
method was chosen to address the research question. Surveys were administered
to first year computer science students and both IT high school teachers and
computer science honours students were interviewed. Non-computer science
students were involved in the participatory design process
