COVID-19, an infectious coronavirus disease, triggered a pandemic that resulted in countless deaths. Since its inception, clinical institutions have used computed tomography as a supplemental screening method to reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Deep learning approaches have shown promising results in addressing the problem; however, less computationally expensive techniques, such as those based on handcrafted descriptors and shallow classifiers, may be equally capable of detecting COVID-19 based on medical images of patients. This work proposes an initial investigation of several handcrafted descriptors well known in the computer vision literature already been exploited for similar tasks. The goal is to discriminate tomographic images belonging to three classes, COVID-19, pneumonia, and normal conditions, and present in a large public dataset. The results show that kNN and ensembles trained with texture descriptors achieve outstanding accuracy in this task, reaching accuracy and F-measure of 93.05% and 89.63%, respectively. Although it did not exceed state of the art, it achieved satisfactory performance with only 36 features, enabling the potential to achieve remarkable improvements from a computational complexity perspective

One of the imaging modalities is X-rays which provide valuable visual information that helps in the identification and characterization of various medical conditions. Chest radiograph (CXR) images have long been used to examine and monitor numerous lung disorders, such as tuberculosis, pneumonia, atelectasis, and hernia. COVID-19 detection can be accomplished using CXR images as well. COVID-19, a virus that causes infections in the lungs and the airways of the upper respiratory tract, was first discovered in 2019 in Wuhan Province, China, and has since been thought to cause substantial airway damage, badly impacting the lungs of affected persons. The virus was swiftly gone viral around the world and a lot of fatalities and cases growing were recorded on a daily basis. CXR can be used to monitor the effects of COVID-19 on lung tissue. This study examines a comparison analysis of k-nearest neighbors (KNN), Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGboost), and Support-Vector Machine (SVM) are some classification approaches for feature selection in this domain using The Moth-Flame Optimization algorithm (MFO), The Grey Wolf Optimizer algorithm (GWO), and The Glowworm Swarm Optimization algorithm (GSO). For this study, researchers employed a data set consisting of two sets as follows: 9,544 2D X-ray images, which were classified into two sets utilizing validated tests: 5,500 images of healthy lungs and 4,044 images of lungs with COVID-19. The second set includes 800 images, 400 of healthy lungs and 400 of lungs affected with COVID-19. Each image has been resized to 200x200 pixels. Precision, recall, and the F1-score were among the quantitative evaluation criteria used in this study

The lung is a vital organ in human physiology and disease in lung causes various health issues. The acute disease in lung is a medical emergency and hence several methods are developed and implemented to detect the lung abnormality. Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the common lung disease and premature diagnosis and treatment is necessary to cure the disease with appropriate medication. Clinical level assessment of TB is commonly performed with chest radiographs (X-ray) and the recorded images are then examined to identify TB and its harshness. This research proposes a TB detection framework using integrated optimal deep and handcrafted features. The different stages of this work include (i) X-ray collection and processing, (ii) Pretrained Deep-Learning (PDL) scheme-based feature mining, (iii) Feature extraction with Local Binary Pattern (LBP) and Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), (iv) Feature optimization with Firefly-Algorithm, (v) Feature ranking and serial concatenation, and (vi) Classification by means of a 5-fold cross confirmation. The result of this study validates that, the ResNet18 scheme helps to achieve a better accuracy with SoftMax (95.2%) classifier and Decision Tree Classifier (99%) with deep and concatenated features, respectively. Further, overall performance of Decision Tree is better compared to other classifiers

The aim of this retrospective study is to assess any association between abdominal CT findings and the radiological stage of COVID-19 pneumonia, pulmonary embolism and patient outcomes. We included 158 adult hospitalized COVID-19 patients between 1 March 2020 and 1 March 2021 who underwent 206 abdominal CTs. Two radiologists reviewed all CT images. Pathological findings were classified as acute or not. A subset of patients with inflammatory pathology in ACE2 organs (bowel, biliary tract, pancreas, urinary system) was identified. The radiological stage of COVID pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, overall days of hospitalization, ICU admission and outcome were registered. Univariate statistical analysis coupled with explainable artificial intelligence (AI) techniques were used to discover associations between variables. The most frequent acute findings were bowel abnormalities

A Bayesian network (BN) is a probabilistic graph based on Bayes' theorem, used to show dependencies or cause-and-effect relationships between variables. They are widely applied in diagnostic processes since they allow the incorporation of medical knowledge to the model while expressing uncertainty in terms of probability. This systematic review presents the state of the art in the applications of BNs in medicine in general and in the diagnosis and prognosis of diseases in particular. Indexed articles from the last 40 years were included. The studies generally used the typical measures of diagnostic and prognostic accuracy: sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, precision, and the area under the ROC curve. Overall, we found that disease diagnosis and prognosis based on BNs can be successfully used to model complex medical problems that require reasoning under conditions of uncertainty.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, Student PhD first pape

    Get PDF
The human papillomavirus (HPV) is responsible for most cervical cancer cases worldwide. This gynecological carcinoma causes many deaths, even though it can be treated by removing malignant tissues at a preliminary stage. In many developing countries, patients do not undertake medical examinations due to the lack of awareness, hospital resources and high testing costs. Hence, it is vital to design a computer aided diagnostic method which can screen cervical cancer patients. In this research, we predict the probability risk of contracting this deadly disease using a custom stacked ensemble machine learning approach. The technique combines the results of several machine learning algorithms on multiple levels to produce reliable predictions. In the beginning, a deep exploratory analysis is conducted using univariate and multivariate statistics. Later, the one-way ANOVA, mutual information and Pearson’s correlation techniques are utilized for feature selection. Since the data was imbalanced, the Borderline-SMOTE technique was used to balance the data. The final stacked machine learning model obtained an accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, area under curve (AUC) and average precision of 98%, 97%, 99%, 98%, 100% and 100%, respectively. To make the model explainable and interpretable to clinicians, explainable artificial intelligence algorithms such as Shapley additive values (SHAP), local interpretable model agnostic explanation (LIME), random forest and ELI5 have been effectively utilized. The optimistic results indicate the potential of automated frameworks to assist doctors and medical professionals in diagnosing and screening potential cervical cancer patients
