    Leveraging Digital Technologies for Management of Peripartum Depression to Mitigate Health Disparities

    Health disparities are adverse, preventable differences in health outcomes that affect disadvantaged populations. Examples of health disparities can be seen in the condition of peripartum depression (PPD), a mood disorder affecting approximately 10-15% of peripartum women. For example, Hispanic and African-American women are less likely to start or continue PPD treatment. Digital health technologies have emerged as practical solutions for PPD care and self-management. However, existing digital solutions lack an incorporation of behavior theory and distinctive information needs based on women’s personal, social, and clinical profiles. Bridging this gap, I adapt Digilego, an integrative digital health development framework consisting of: a) mixed-methods user needs analysis, (b) behavior and health literacy theory mapping, and (c) content and feature engineering specifications for future programmatic development, to address health disparities. This enhanced framework is then used to design and develop a digital platform (MomMind) for PPD prevention among women in their peripartum period. This platform contains a digital journal, social forum, a library repository of PPD patient education materials, and a repository of PPD self-monitoring surveys. In line with the existing Digilego digital health framework, throughout my iterative process of design and development, I gather design insights from my target population (n=19) and their health providers (n=9) using qualitative research methods (e.g., interviews) and secondary analysis of peer interactions in two PPD online forums (n=55,301 posts from 9,364 users spanning years 2008-2022). These multimodal needs gathering efforts allowed me to a) compile women’s information and technology needs, and b) utilize them as a guide for MomMind intervention development and evaluation. One key MomMind strength is its grounding in theory-driven behavior change techniques (e.g., shaping knowledge) and patient engagement features (e.g., electronic questionnaires) as facilitated by Digilego. Also, I extend Digilego by incorporating literacy domains (e.g., health literacy) and cognitive processes (e.g., understanding) from the eHealth literacy framework into my content engineering approach. After an in-house usability assessment, I conducted a pilot acceptability evaluation of MomMind using cross-sectional acceptability surveys and PPD health literacy surveys administered pre-and-post use of MomMind. Interviews were also conducted to assess participant’s personal opinions and feedback. The study sample included n=30 peripartum women, of whom 16 (53.3%) were Hispanic and 17 (56.7%) were in low-income ranges.     Software traceability for multi-agent systems implemented using BDI architecture

    The development of multi-agent software systems is considered a complex task due to (a) the large number and heterogeneity of documents generated during the development of these systems, (b) the lack of support for the whole development life-cycle by existing agent-oriented methodologies requiring the use of different methodologies, and (c) the possible incompleteness of the documents and models generated during the development of the systems. In order to alleviate the above problems, in this thesis, a traceability framework is described to support the development of multi-agent systems. The framework supports automatic generation of traceability relations and identification of missing elements (i.e., completeness checking) in the models created during the development life-cycle of multi-agent systems using the Belief-Desire-Intention (BDI) architecture. Traceability has been recognized as an important activity in the software development process. Traceability relations can guarantee and improve software quality and can help with several tasks such as the evolution of software systems, reuse of parts of the system, validation that a system meets its requirements, understanding of the rationale for certain design decisions, identification of common aspects of the system, and analysis of implications of changes in the system. The traceability framework presented in this thesis concentrates on multi-agent software systems developed using i* framework, Prometheus methodology, and JACK language. Here, a traceability reference model is presented for software artefacts generated when using i* framework, Prometheus methodology, and JACK language. Different types of relations between the artefacts are identified. The framework is based on a rule-based approach to support automatic identification of traceability relations and missing elements between the generated artefacts. Software models represented in XML were used to support the heterogeneity of models and tools used during the software development life-cycle. In the framework, the rules are specified in an extension of XQuery to support (i) representation of the consequence part of the rules, i.e. the actions to be taken when the conditions are satisfied, and (ii) extra functions to cover some of the traceability relations being proposed and completeness checking of the models. A prototype tool has been developed to illustrate and evaluate the work. The work has been evaluated in terms of recall and precision measurements in three different case studies.     A Consumer-Centric Open Innovation Framework for Food and Packaging Manufacturing

But, this sector recently perceives its end-user to be wary of radically new products and changes in consumption patterns. However, new product development involves not only the product itself but also the entire manufacturing and distribution network. In this paper, we present a new ICT based framework that embraces open innovation to place customers in the product development loop but at the same time assesses and eventually coordinates the entire manufacturing and supply chain. The aim is to design new food products that consumers will buy and at the same time ensure that these products will reach the consumer in time and at adequate quantity. On the product development side, our framework enables new food products that offer an integrated sensory experience of food and packaging, which encompass customization, healthy eating, and sustainability

    Profiling and understanding student information behaviour: Methodologies and meaning

    This paper draws on work conducted under the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) User Behaviour Monitoring and Evaluation Framework to identify a range of issues associated with research design that can form a platform for enquiry about knowledge creation in the arena of user behaviour. The Framework has developed a multidimensional set of tools for profiling, monitoring and evaluating user behaviour. The Framework has two main approaches: one, a broad‐based survey which generates both a qualitative and a quantitative profile of user behaviour, and the other a longitudinal qualitative study of user behaviour that (in addition to providing in‐depth insights) is the basis for the development of the EIS (Electronic Information Services) Diagnostic Toolkit. The strengths and weaknesses of the Framework approach are evaluated. In the context of profiling user behaviour, key methodological concerns relate to: representativeness, sampling and access, the selection of appropriate measures and the interpretation of those measures. Qualitative approaches are used to generate detailed insights. These include detailed narratives, case study analysis and gap analysis. The messages from this qualitative analysis do not lend themselves to simple summarization. One approach that has been employed to capture and interpret these messages is the development of the EIS Diagnostic Toolkit. This toolkit can be used to assess and monitor an institution's progress with embedding EIS into learning processes. Finally, consideration must be given to integration of insights generated through different strands within the Framework

    Network support for integrated design

    A framework of network support for utilization of integrated design over the Internet has been developed. The techniques presented also applicable for Intranet/Extranet. The integrated design system was initially developed for local application in a single site. With the network support, geographically dispersed designers can collaborate a design task through out the total design process, quickly respond to clients’ requests and enhance the design argilty.     SOLACE: A framework for electronic negotiations

Thus, the evaluation of electronic negotiation systems is difficult as each one is based on a different framework. Additionally, each developer has to design a new framework for any system to be developed, leading to a ‘reinvention of the wheel’. This paper presents SOLACE—a generic framework for multi-issue negotiations, which can be applied to a variety of negotiation scenarios. In contrast with other frameworks for electronic negotiations, SOLACE supports hybrid systems in which the negotiation participants can be humans, agents or a combination of the two. By recognizing the importance of strategies in negotiations and incorporating a time attribute in negotiation proposals, SOLACE enhances existing approaches and provides a foundation for the flexible electronic negotiation systems of the future

    Systems approach to engineering education design

    [Abstract]: The design and delivery of effective engineering education to diverse cohorts of adult learners is challenging. The sheer volume and diversity of published literature relating to the scholarship of teaching and learning presents a challenge to educational designers and teaching practitioners alike. A systems approach to design and development, incorporating key principles from the literature, can assist practitioners (particularly those new to teaching) in the effective design and delivery of technical courses. This paper presents a research-based educational lifecycle model to support the design of engineering education. The paper then describes a requirements-driven development methodology that has been applied successfully to the design and delivery of a number of technical courses involving different cohorts of adult learners. The application of the methodology to development of an introductory radar systems course is used as a case study throughout the paper
