The precious coral fishery in Hawaii and the Western Pacific consists of one industry but two distinct and separate fisheries. The first is the harvest of black coral by scuba divers from depths of 30-100 m. The second is a fishery for pink and gold coral at depths between 400 and 1500 m and employs either a human-operated submersible that permits selective harvest or tangle net dredges which are nonselective. The modern history of these fisheries date from 1958 until the present. In this paper the ecology, life history. and management of the dominant species that make up these fisheries are reviewed. Research needs of the fisheries and the economic and future prospects of the precious coral industry are also described. At the present, the precious coral jewelry industry in Hawaii (all species) is valued at about $25 million at the retail level

The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of ‘Dialogues’ as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with ‘others’, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, “dialogue” as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title ‘translated’ into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017. There are many topics which refer to three macro sessions: - Witnessing (signs and history) - Communicating (signs and semiotics) - Experimenting (signs and sciences) Thanks to the different points of view, an exceptional resource of our disciplinary area, we want to try to outline the prevailing theoretical-operational synergies, the collaborative lines of an instrumental nature, the recent updates of the repertoires of images that attest and nourish the relations among representation, history, semiotics, sciences

    A space for reconciliation

The environment where I grew up retains some characteristics from The Chinese Cultural Revolution, and still influences my thinking and behavior close to the mainstream and following the rules unconsciously. Contemporary jewelry has affected me to be more critical in a positive way. I want to share this transformative experience with people who have never had contact with contemporary art, which is an alien concept for most Chinese people. I use jewelry as the medium to express my ideas. But the typical response to my work is “I appreciate your concepts, but I can’t accept your pieces.” So, how can I find a jewelry form that is both conceptual and acceptable? I will explore this in my thesi

Contextualization: Tanzanian Maasai Culture and the Implications for Worship and Women’s Ministry

    Get PDF
Maasai religion, music, and cultural customs have a definite impact on the methodology of missions and relations with the people of their tribes, specifically in the areas of worship and women’s ministry. Maasai tribes have specific cultural needs that require ministry different from those usually employed in Western methodology. There are theological foundations of worship and women’s ministry that must be understood in order to properly execute the process of contextualization as it applies to the Christian gospel. An analysis of the history, religion, rituals, gender roles, and music of Maasai tribes in Tanzania coupled with an understanding of contextualization will aid in the discovery of the implications of culture for ministry within this specific tribal setting

    Surface Treatment of Metals

The purpose or this thesis is to relate to others my experimentation of various types of metals, and the methods employed to decorate the surfaces of these particular metals. The differences, and similarities in means of working with and decorating each type of metal used is also discussed. The first part of the paper is devoted to a brief history of metal techniques. This gives a better understanding as to when the particular techniques were first employed and how many of them were almost lost with the arrival of nineteeth century industralization. Techniques which I used, and the various means of achieving them is discussed next. This brings an understanding to the reader when the series or works are explained in the final section of the tesis. The final portion of the paper gives detailed explainations of each of the pieces done while experimenting with the various techniques. Particular Problems which arose with the incorporation of techniques are discussed, along with the sucess of others. I conclude the paper by noting that the major problem in my working with surface treatments was, that more forethought about accual construction was necessary. New techniques needed to be explored to avoid the quailities of dullness and staliness

Effect of finger rings on microbial cross-contamination during dental clinical procedures.

    Get PDF
CDCIWHO only recommends that rings be removed under gloves because of cross-contamination between health care workers and patients. Microbiological samples of oral streptococci beneath rings and between fingers under non-sterile exam gloves were taken before and after dental procedures (before and after washing with antimicrobial soap) from 50 junior/senior dental students. Subjects wore two rings on one hand, with none on the other (control). Rings were worn on the opposite hand at another session. Handedness, glove tears, and leaks, were also measured. There were significant glove tears and leakage in the glove on the dominant hand, especially when wearing rings (experimental). 79.8% of right and 70.5% of left gloves were torn and 70.3% of students used cold water to wash. Wearing rings with/without stones, perforations, or sharp edges under nitrile gloves while performing dental treatment procedures retained oral streptococci even after the post-wash. Wearing rings under gloves should be prohibited
