    A Multi-disciplinary Approach to the Investigation of Aspects of Serial Order in Cognition

    Serial order processing or Sequence processing underlies many human activities such as speech, language, skill learning, planning, problem solving, etc. Investigating the\ud neural bases of sequence processing enables us to understand serial order in cognition and helps us building intelligent devices. In the current paper, various\ud cognitive issues related to sequence processing will be discussed with examples. Some of the issues are: distributed versus local representation, pre-wired versus\ud adaptive origins of representation, implicit versus explicit learning, fixed/flat versus hierarchical organization, timing aspects, order information embedded in sequences, primacy versus recency in list learning and aspects of sequence perception such as recognition, recall and generation. Experimental results that give evidence for the involvement of various brain areas will be described. Finally, theoretical frameworks based on Markov models and Reinforcement Learning paradigm will be presented. These theoretical ideas are useful for studying sequential phenomena in a principled way

    Face detection and clustering for video indexing applications

    This paper describes a method for automatically detecting human faces in generic video sequences. We employ an iterative algorithm in order to give a confidence measure for the presence or absence of faces within video shots. Skin colour filtering is carried out on a selected number of frames per video shot, followed by the application of shape and size heuristics. Finally, the remaining candidate regions are normalized and projected into an eigenspace, the reconstruction error being the measure of confidence for presence/absence of face. Following this, the confidence score for the entire video shot is calculated. In order to cluster extracted faces into a set of face classes, we employ an incremental procedure using a PCA-based dissimilarity measure in con-junction with spatio-temporal correlation.     Side-view face recognition is a challenging problem with many applications. Especially in real-life scenarios where the environment is uncontrolled, coping with pose variations up to side-view positions is an important task for face recognition. In this paper we discuss the use of side view face recognition techniques to be used in house safety applications. Our aim is to recognize people as they pass through a door, and estimate their location in the house. Here, we compare available databases appropriate for this task, and review current methods for profile face recognition

    Machine learning and its applications in reliability analysis systems

    In this thesis, we are interested in exploring some aspects of Machine Learning (ML) and its application in the Reliability Analysis systems (RAs). We begin by investigating some ML paradigms and their- techniques, go on to discuss the possible applications of ML in improving RAs performance, and lastly give guidelines of the architecture of learning RAs. Our survey of ML covers both levels of Neural Network learning and Symbolic learning. In symbolic process learning, five types of learning and their applications are discussed: rote learning, learning from instruction, learning from analogy, learning from examples, and learning from observation and discovery. The Reliability Analysis systems (RAs) presented in this thesis are mainly designed for maintaining plant safety supported by two functions: risk analysis function, i.e., failure mode effect analysis (FMEA) ; and diagnosis function, i.e., real-time fault location (RTFL). Three approaches have been discussed in creating the RAs. According to the result of our survey, we suggest currently the best design of RAs is to embed model-based RAs, i.e., MORA (as software) in a neural network based computer system (as hardware). However, there are still some improvement which can be made through the applications of Machine Learning. By implanting the 'learning element', the MORA will become learning MORA (La MORA) system, a learning Reliability Analysis system with the power of automatic knowledge acquisition and inconsistency checking, and more.     An incremental clustering and associative learning architecture for intelligent robotics

    The ability to learn from the environment and memorise the acquired knowledge is essential for robots to become autonomous and versatile artificial companions. This thesis proposes a novel learning and memory architecture for robots, which performs associative learning and recall of sensory and actuator patterns. The approach avoids the inclusion of task-specific expert knowledge and can deal with any kind of multi-dimensional real-valued data, apart from being tolerant to noise and supporting incremental learning. The proposed architecture integrates two machine learning methods: a topology learning algorithm that performs incremental clustering, and an associative memory model that learns relationship information based on the co-occurrence of inputs. The evaluations of both the topology learning algorithm and the associative memory model involved the memorisation of high-dimensional visual data as well as the association of symbolic data, presented simultaneously and sequentially. Moreover, the document analyses the results of two experiments in which the entire architecture was evaluated regarding its associative and incremental learning capabilities. One experiment comprised an incremental learning task with visual patterns and text labels, which was performed both in a simulated scenario and with a real robot. In a second experiment a robot learned to recognise visual patterns in the form of road signs and associated them with di erent con gurations of its arm joints. The thesis also discusses several learning-related aspects of the architecture and highlights strengths and weaknesses of the proposed approach. The developed architecture and corresponding ndings contribute to the domains of machine learning and intelligent robotics

    Perceptual category learning of photographic and painterly stimuli in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) and humans

    Humans are highly adept at categorizing visual stimuli, but studies of human categorization are typically validated by verbal reports. This makes it difficult to perform comparative studies of categorization using non-human animals. Interpretation of comparative studies is further complicated by the possibility that animal performance may merely reflect reinforcement learning, whereby discrete features act as discriminative cues for categorization. To assess and compare how humans and monkeys classified visual stimuli, we trained 7 rhesus macaques and 41 human volunteers to respond, in a specific order, to four simultaneously presented stimuli at a time, each belonging to a different perceptual category. These exemplars were drawn at random from large banks of images, such that the stimuli presented changed on every trial. Subjects nevertheless identified and ordered these changing stimuli correctly. Three monkeys learned to order naturalistic photographs; four others, close-up sections of paintings with distinctive styles. Humans learned to order both types of stimuli. All subjects classified stimuli at levels substantially greater than that predicted by chance or by feature-driven learning alone, even when stimuli changed on every trial. However, humans more closely resembled monkeys when classifying the more abstract painting stimuli than the photographic stimuli. This points to a common classification strategy in both species, one that humans can rely on in the absence of linguistic labels for categories

    Network Bending: Expressive Manipulation of Generative Models in Multiple Domains

    This paper presents the network bending framework, a new approach for manipulating and interacting with deep generative models. We present a comprehensive set of deterministic transformations that can be inserted as distinct layers into the computational graph of a trained generative neural network and applied during inference. In addition, we present a novel algorithm for analysing the deep generative model and clustering features based on their spatial activation maps. This allows features to be grouped together based on spatial similarity in an unsupervised fashion. This results in the meaningful manipulation of sets of features that correspond to the generation of a broad array of semantically significant features of the generated results. We outline this framework, demonstrating our results on deep generative models for both image and audio domains. We show how it allows for the direct manipulation of semantically meaningful aspects of the generative process as well as allowing for a broad range of expressive outcomes

    ‘Quantum’ Parallel computation with neural networks

    Correlation matrix memories have been successfully applied to many domains. This work implements a production system put forward in [Austin, 2003], to demonstrate its viability as an efficient rule-chaining process. Background information on rule-chaining and CMMs is given, followed by a review of the proposed production system. Throughout the iterative development process, experimentation is performed in order to investigate the effects of changing the properties of vectors used in this system. The results show that generating vectors using the algorithm proposed in [Baum, 1988] with a weight close to log2 of the vector length provides the highest storage capacity. The simple system implemented in this work performs rule-chaining effectively. This leads to the conclusion that the proposed production system is viable, and that this area warrants further work

    A new class of neural architectures to model episodic memory : computational studies of distal reward learning

    A computational cognitive neuroscience model is proposed, which models episodic memory based on the mammalian brain. A computational neural architecture instantiates the proposed model and is tested on a particular task of distal reward learning. Categorical Neural Semantic Theory informs the architecture design. To experiment upon the computational brain model, embodiment and an environment in which the embodiment exists are simulated. This simulated environment realizes the Morris Water Maze task, a well established biological experimental test of distal reward learning. The embodied neural architecture is treated as a virtual rat and the environment it acts in as a virtual water tank. Performance levels of the neural architectures are evaluated through analysis of embodied behavior in the distal reward learning task. Comparison is made to biological rat experimental data, as well as comparison to other published models. In addition, differences in performance are compared between the normal and categorically informed versions of the architecture
