    Improved eventing protocol for universal plug and play

    UPnP is a widely-spread connectivity standard, which allows networked devices to cooperate in an autonomous fashion by using functionality found on the network. In this article we validate UPnP as a service-oriented architecture. We identify shortcomings of the standard and propose solutions. In our view, eventing is the weakest mechanism in UPnP technology. We propose extensions to the existing eventing protocol in UPnP, which allow overcoming identified problems. We compare our solution with standard UPnP with respect to performance

    Are You Still There? - A Lightweight Algorithm to Monitor Node Presence in Self-Configuring Networks

    This paper is concerned with the analysis and redesign of a distributed algorithm to monitor the availability of nodes in self-configuring networks. The simple scheme to regularly probe a node Âż "are you still there?" Âż may easily lead to over- or underloading. The essence of the algorithm is therefore to automatically adapt the probing frequency. We show that a self-adaptive scheme to control the probe load, originally proposed as an extension to the UPnPTM (Universal Plug and Play) standard, leads to an unfair treatment of nodes: some nodes probe fast while others almost starve. An alternative distributed algorithm is proposed that overcomes this problem and that tolerates highly dynamic network topology changes. The algorithm is very simple and can be implemented on large networks of small computing devices such as mobile phones, PDAs, and so on

    Nowadays, users consume a lot of functionality in their home coming from a service provider located in the Internet. While the home network is typically shielded off as much as possible from the `outside world', the supplied services could be greatly extended if it was possible to use local information. In this article, an extended service is presented that integrates the user's multimedia content, scattered over multiple devices in the home network, into the Electronic Program Guide (EPG) of the Digital TV. We propose to virtualize the set-top box, by migrating all functionality except user interfacing to the service provider infrastructure. The media in the home network is discovered through standard Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), of which the QoS functionality is exploited to ensure high quality playback over the home network, that basically is out of the control of the service provider.     Minimizing the number of dropped User Datagram Protocol (UDP) messages in a network is regarded as a challenge by researchers. This issue represents serious problems for many protocols particularly those that depend on sending messages as part of their strategy, such us service discovery protocols. This paper proposes and evaluates an algorithm to predict the minimum period of time required between two or more consecutive messages and suggests the minimum queue sizes for the routers, to manage the traffic and minimise the number of dropped messages that has been caused by either congestion or queue overflow or both together. The algorithm has been applied to the Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) protocol using ns2 simulator. It was tested when the routers were connected in two configurations; as a centralized and de centralized. The message length and bandwidth of the links among the routers were taken in the consideration. The result shows Better improvement in number of dropped messages `among the routers
