A Methodology for Discovering how to Adaptively Personalize to Users using Experimental Comparisons
We explain and provide examples of a formalism that supports the methodology
of discovering how to adapt and personalize technology by combining randomized
experiments with variables associated with user models. We characterize a
formal relationship between the use of technology to conduct A/B experiments
and use of technology for adaptive personalization. The MOOClet Formalism [11]
captures the equivalence between experimentation and personalization in its
conceptualization of modular components of a technology. This motivates a
unified software design pattern that enables technology components that can be
compared in an experiment to also be adapted based on contextual data, or
personalized based on user characteristics. With the aid of a concrete use
case, we illustrate the potential of the MOOClet formalism for a methodology
that uses randomized experiments of alternative micro-designs to discover how
to adapt technology based on user characteristics, and then dynamically
implements these personalized improvements in real time
Deep Learning based Recommender System: A Survey and New Perspectives
With the ever-growing volume of online information, recommender systems have
been an effective strategy to overcome such information overload. The utility
of recommender systems cannot be overstated, given its widespread adoption in
many web applications, along with its potential impact to ameliorate many
problems related to over-choice. In recent years, deep learning has garnered
considerable interest in many research fields such as computer vision and
natural language processing, owing not only to stellar performance but also the
attractive property of learning feature representations from scratch. The
influence of deep learning is also pervasive, recently demonstrating its
effectiveness when applied to information retrieval and recommender systems
research. Evidently, the field of deep learning in recommender system is
flourishing. This article aims to provide a comprehensive review of recent
research efforts on deep learning based recommender systems. More concretely,
we provide and devise a taxonomy of deep learning based recommendation models,
along with providing a comprehensive summary of the state-of-the-art. Finally,
we expand on current trends and provide new perspectives pertaining to this new

Multi-Target Prediction: A Unifying View on Problems and Methods
Multi-target prediction (MTP) is concerned with the simultaneous prediction
of multiple target variables of diverse type. Due to its enormous application
potential, it has developed into an active and rapidly expanding research field
that combines several subfields of machine learning, including multivariate
regression, multi-label classification, multi-task learning, dyadic prediction,
zero-shot learning, network inference, and matrix completion. In this paper, we
present a unifying view on MTP problems and methods. First, we formally discuss
commonalities and differences between existing MTP problems. To this end, we
introduce a general framework that covers the above subfields as special cases.
As a second contribution, we provide a structured overview of MTP methods. This
is accomplished by identifying a number of key properties, which distinguish
such methods and determine their suitability for different types of problems.

EGO: a personalised multimedia management tool
The problems of Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) sys- tems can be attributed to the semantic gap between the low-level data representation and the high-level concepts the user associates with images, on the one hand, and the time-varying and often vague nature of the underlying information need, on the other. These problems can be addressed by improving the interaction between the user and the system. In this paper, we sketch the development of CBIR interfaces, and introduce our view on how to solve some of the problems of the studied interfaces. To address the semantic gap and long-term multifaceted information needs, we propose a "retrieval in context" system. EGO is a tool for the management of image collections, supporting the user through personalisation and adaptation. We will describe how it learns from the user's personal organisation, allowing it to recommend relevant images to the user. Beyond Personalization: Research Directions in Multistakeholder Recommendation
Recommender systems are personalized information access applications; they
are ubiquitous in today's online environment, and effective at finding items
that meet user needs and tastes. As the reach of recommender systems has
extended, it has become apparent that the single-minded focus on the user
common to academic research has obscured other important aspects of
recommendation outcomes. Properties such as fairness, balance, profitability,
and reciprocity are not captured by typical metrics for recommender system
evaluation. The concept of multistakeholder recommendation has emerged as a
unifying framework for describing and understanding recommendation settings
where the end user is not the sole focus. This article describes the origins of
multistakeholder recommendation, and the landscape of system designs. It
provides illustrative examples of current research, as well as outlining open
