Current Challenges and Visions in Music Recommender Systems Research
Music recommender systems (MRS) have experienced a boom in recent years,
thanks to the emergence and success of online streaming services, which
nowadays make available almost all music in the world at the user's fingertip.
While today's MRS considerably help users to find interesting music in these
huge catalogs, MRS research is still facing substantial challenges. In
particular when it comes to build, incorporate, and evaluate recommendation
strategies that integrate information beyond simple user--item interactions or
content-based descriptors, but dig deep into the very essence of listener
needs, preferences, and intentions, MRS research becomes a big endeavor and
related publications quite sparse.
The purpose of this trends and survey article is twofold. We first identify
and shed light on what we believe are the most pressing challenges MRS research
is facing, from both academic and industry perspectives. We review the state of
the art towards solving these challenges and discuss its limitations. Second,
we detail possible future directions and visions we contemplate for the further
evolution of the field. The article should therefore serve two purposes: giving
the interested reader an overview of current challenges in MRS research and
providing guidance for young researchers by identifying interesting, yet
under-researched, directions in the field

PRESENCE: A human-inspired architecture for speech-based human-machine interaction
Recent years have seen steady improvements in the quality and performance of speech-based human-machine interaction driven by a significant convergence in the methods and techniques employed. However, the quantity of training data required to improve state-of-the-art systems seems to be growing exponentially and performance appears to be asymptotic to a level that may be inadequate for many real-world applications. This suggests that there may be a fundamental flaw in the underlying architecture of contemporary systems, as well as a failure to capitalize on the combinatorial properties of human spoken language. This paper addresses these issues and presents a novel architecture for speech-based human-machine interaction inspired by recent findings in the neurobiology of living systems. Called PRESENCE-"PREdictive SENsorimotor Control and Emulation" - this new architecture blurs the distinction between the core components of a traditional spoken language dialogue system and instead focuses on a recursive hierarchical feedback control structure. Cooperative and communicative behavior emerges as a by-product of an architecture that is founded on a model of interaction in which the system has in mind the needs and intentions of a user and a user has in mind the needs and intentions of the system
An EMG study of the lip muscles during covert auditory verbal hallucinations in schizophrenia
Purpose: Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs) are speech perceptions in the
absence of a external stimulation. An influential theoretical account of AVHs
in schizophrenia claims that a deficit in inner speech monitoring would cause
the verbal thoughts of the patient to be perceived as external voices. The
account is based on a predictive control model, in which verbal self-monitoring
is implemented. The aim of this study was to examine lip muscle activity during
AVHs in schizophrenia patients, in order to check whether inner speech
occurred. Methods: Lip muscle activity was recorded during covert AVHs (without
articulation) and rest. Surface electromyography (EMG) was used on eleven
schizophrenia patients. Results: Our results show an increase in EMG activity
in the orbicularis oris inferior muscle, during covert AVHs relative to rest.
This increase is not due to general muscular tension since there was no
increase of muscular activity in the forearm muscle. Conclusion: This evidence
that AVHs might be self-generated inner speech is discussed in the framework of
a predictive control model. Further work is needed to better describe how the
inner speech monitoring dysfunction occurs and how inner speech is controlled
and monitored. This will help better understanding how AVHs occur
The Critical Coupling Likelihood Method: A new approach for seamless integration of environmental and operating conditions of gravitational wave detectors into gravitational wave searches
Any search effort for gravitational waves (GW) using interferometric
detectors like LIGO needs to be able to identify if and when noise is coupling
into the detector's output signal. The Critical Coupling Likelihood (CCL)
method has been developed to characterize potential noise coupling and in the
future aid GW search efforts. By testing two hypotheses about pairs of
channels, CCL is able to identify undesirable coupled instrumental noise from
potential GW candidates. Our preliminary results show that CCL can associate up
to of observed artifacts with , to local noise sources,
while reducing the duty cycle of the instrument by . An approach
like CCL will become increasingly important as GW research moves into the
Advanced LIGO era, going from the first GW detection to GW astronomy.Comment: submitted CQ

Stigmergy in Web 2.0: a model for site dynamics
Building Web 2.0 sites does not necessarily ensure the success of the site. We aim to better understand what improves the success of a site by drawing insight from biologically inspired design patterns. Web 2.0 sites provide a mechanism for human interaction enabling powerful intercommunication between massive volumes of users. Early Web 2.0 site providers that were previously dominant are being succeeded by newer sites providing innovative social interaction mechanisms. Understanding what site traits contribute to this success drives research into Web sites mechanics using models to describe the associated social networking behaviour. Some of these models attempt to show how the volume of users provides a self-organising and self-contextualisation of content. One model describing coordinated environments is called stigmergy, a term originally describing coordinated insect behavior. This paper explores how exploiting stigmergy can provide a valuable mechanism for identifying and analysing online user behavior specifically when considering that user freedom of choice is restricted by the provided web site functionality.
