Understanding dynamics of innovation based on system thinking

    Get PDF
Frequently, the innovation processes require knowledge in several domains that enterprises do not usually hold. In order to address this problem, the issue of the knowledge transfer in collaborative environments started to attract attention. In this context, the present paper aims at discussing the advantages of applying a system thinking approach in order to deepen the understanding of the factors that leverage or constrain knowledge transfer to support co-innovation, and its impact at a member level, for instance, in terms of the capacity of generating new ideas, processes and products. Finally, based on experimental results from a Portuguese collaborative network, BRISA network, a discussion on the benefits, challenges and difficulties found are presented and discussed.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Managing open innovation project risks based on a social network analysis perspective

In today’s business environment, it is often argued, that if organizations want to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage, they must be able to innovate, so that they can meet complex market demands as they deliver products, solutions, or services. However, organizations alone do not always have the necessary resources (brilliant minds, technologies, know-how, and so on) to match those market demands. To overcome this constraint, organizations usually engage in collaborative network models—such as the open innovation model—with other business partners, public institutions, universities, and development centers. Nonetheless, it is frequently argued that the lack of models that support such collaborative models is still perceived as a major constraint for organizations to more frequently engage in it. In this work, a heuristic model is proposed, to provide support in managing open innovation projects, by, first, identifying project collaborative critical success factors (CSFs) analyzing four interactive collaborative dimensions (4-ICD) that usually occur in such projects—(1) key project organization communication and insight degree, (2) organizational control degree, (3) project information dependency degree, (3) and (4) feedback readiness degree— and, second, using those identified CSFs to estimate the outcome likelihood (success, or failure) of ongoing open innovation projects.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Applying social network analysis to identify project critical success factors

A key challenge in project management is to understand to which extent the dynamic interactions between the different project people—through formal and informal networks of collaboration that temporarily emerge across a project´s lifecycle—throughout all the phases of a project lifecycle, influence a project’s outcome. This challenge has been a growing concern to organizations that deliver projects, due their huge impact in economic, environmental, and social sustainability. In this work, a heuristic two-part model, supported with three scientific fields—project management, risk management, and social network analysis—is proposed, to uncover and measure the extent to which the dynamic interactions of project people—as they work through networks of collaboration—across all the phases of a project lifecycle, influence a project‘s outcome, by first identifying critical success factos regarding five general project collaboration types((1) communication and insight, (2) internal and cross collaboration, (3) know-how and power sharing, (4) clustering, and (5) team work efficiency) by analyzing delivered projects, and second, using those identified critical success factos to provide guidance in upcoming projects regarding the five project collaboration types.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Dissertation presented to obtain the degree of Doctor in Electrical and Computer Engineering, specialization on Collaborative Enterprise NetworksCollaborative-Networks (CN) have experienced a fast evolution in the last two decades. The collaboration among independent entities or professionals supported by Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has attracted the research community to establish the conceptual basis for this scientific discipline. Service Orientation has been one of the key selected paradigms for that conceptual basis. Nevertheless, the service concept itself does not have a common understanding in the Business and ICT worlds. In the former, client satisfaction, resources management and business process models are some example concerns, whilst the later deals with interoperability, remote function calling or communication protocols. If for example an enterprise provides some service, it may hire specialists to wrap such service into web-services, expecting to reach worldwide potential new clients. In fact, nowadays Web Services and Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) are the technological elements most commonly used. However, these are passive elements in the sense they do not perform any action towards pursuing business interests, which constitute a limiting factor from a business perspective. Another approach for the above mentioned enterprise is to follow the Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) approach, as the pro-activity is a keyword in such contexts. Nevertheless, as MAS approaches are not so commonly used and not so robust yet, the worldwide potential set of new clients is reduced; which also constitutes an inhibitor factor from the business perspective. This dissertation proposes a Pro-Active Services Ecosystem Framework, gathering inspiration from both the SOA and MAS research areas, trying to bridge the business and ICT worlds through the base concepts for the creation of a Services’ Ecosystem where business services are represented in a pro-active manner towards pursuing business interests, like finding collaboration opportunities or improving the chances each CN member has to see its services selected among competitors, for example. This work also includes a prototype system applied / validated in the area of a Professional Virtual Community of Senior Professionals

Currently, many companies feel the need to stay competitive in new, more demanding, and often saturated markets. One of the base factors of organisational success is workplace morale. Workplace morale impacts employee happiness and well-being in their work environment, subsequently affecting their commitment towards the company and their productivity. For this reason, employee morale should be one of the main focuses in every organisation, given that high or low morale could significantly impact the outcome of any business. The study developed on the scope of the current dissertation intends to create awareness on employee morale, and the way it affects organisations. The study mentions the factors that influence workplace morale, externally, internally, and individually, exploring several ways of measuring it, as well as several techniques that allow the implementation of a high morale culture and how to maintain it. Relevant themes, such as remote working, lean management, green ocean strategy and collaborative networks, that are currently more and more prevalent, are addressed in this study, as well as the impact they have on workplace morale. Assembling all the information gathered, it’s proposed a conceptual model that defines the relationship between workplace morale and company productivity. The model’s applicability is confirmed through a case study, therefore making it suitable to become a functional model.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
