    Energy harvesting Internet of Things health-based paradigm: toward outage probability reduction through inter-wireless body area network cooperation

    In today’s healthcare environment, the Internet of Things technology provides suitability among physicians and patients, as it is valuable in numerous medicinal fields. Wireless body sensor network technologies are essential technologies in the growth of Internet of Things healthcare paradigm, where every patient is monitored utilising small-powered and lightweight sensor nodes. A dual-hop, inter–wireless body sensor network cooperation and an incremental inter–wireless body sensor network cooperation with energy harvesting in the Internet of Things health-based paradigm have been investigated and designed in this work. The three protocols have been named and abbreviated as follows: energy harvesting–based dual-hop cooperation, energy harvesting–based inter–wireless body sensor network cooperation and energy harvesting–based incremental inter–wireless body sensor network cooperation. Outage probabilities for the three designed protocols were investigated and inspected, and mathematical expressions of the outage probabilities were derived. The simulation and numerical results showed that the energy harvesting–based incremental inter–wireless body sensor network cooperation provided superior performance over the energy harvesting–based inter–wireless body sensor network cooperation and energy harvesting–based dual-hop cooperation by 1.38 times and 5.72 times, respectively; while energy harvesting–based inter–wireless body sensor network cooperation achieved better performance over energy harvesting–based dual-hop cooperation by 1.87 times

    Heath-PRIOR: An Intelligent Ensemble Architecture to Identify Risk Cases in Healthcare

    Smart city environments, when applied to healthcare, improve the quality of people\u27s lives, enabling, for instance, disease prediction and treatment monitoring. In medical settings, case prioritization is of great importance, with beneficial outcomes both in terms of patient health and physicians\u27 daily work. Recommender systems are an alternative to automatically integrate the data generated in such environments with predictive models and recommend actions, content, or services. The data produced by smart devices are accurate and reliable for predictive and decision-making contexts. This study main purpose is to assist patients and doctors in the early detection of disease or prediction of postoperative worsening through constant monitoring. To achieve this objective, this study proposes an architecture for recommender systems applied to healthcare, which can prioritize emergency cases. The architecture brings an ensemble approach for prediction, which adopts multiple Machine Learning algorithms. The methodology used to carry out the study followed three steps. First, a systematic literature mapping, second, the construction and development of the architecture, and third, the evaluation through two case studies. The results demonstrated the feasibility of the proposal. The predictions are promising and adherent to the application context for accurate datasets with a low amount of noises or missing values

    Improving Access and Mental Health for Youth Through Virtual Models of Care

    The overall objective of this research is to evaluate the use of a mobile health smartphone application (app) to improve the mental health of youth between the ages of 14–25 years, with symptoms of anxiety/depression. This project includes 115 youth who are accessing outpatient mental health services at one of three hospitals and two community agencies. The youth and care providers are using eHealth technology to enhance care. The technology uses mobile questionnaires to help promote self-assessment and track changes to support the plan of care. The technology also allows secure virtual treatment visits that youth can participate in through mobile devices. This longitudinal study uses participatory action research with mixed methods. The majority of participants identified themselves as Caucasian (66.9%). Expectedly, the demographics revealed that Anxiety Disorders and Mood Disorders were highly prevalent within the sample (71.9% and 67.5% respectively). Findings from the qualitative summary established that both staff and youth found the software and platform beneficial

    Fuzzy adaptive cognitive stimulation therapy generation for Alzheimer’s sufferers: Towards a pervasive dementia care monitoring platform

    In this paper, we present a novel system for cognitive stimulation therapy to progressively assess cognitive impairment and emotional well-being of dementia patients in social care settings. The system assesses patients interactions and computes performance scores for different areas of cognitive stimulation. Patient interactions are initially classified into predefined performance categories through clustering of a sampled population. New personalized stimulation plans tailored to match the patient’s changing level of impairment are generated automatically through a set of fuzzy rule based systems using quantitative attributes and the overall scores of patients interactions. Therapists can redefine, evaluate and adjust the rules governing difficulty and activity levels for different stimulation areas to fine tune generated activity plans. The system can also be combined with an Internet of Things (IoT) enabled patient dialogue system for determining the affective state of participants during therapy sessions that could be used as a pervasive condition monitoring platform. Experiments consisting of therapy sessions of patients interacting with the system were performed in which the activity plans were automatically generated. Initial results showed that the system outputs were in agreement with the therapists own assessment in most of the stimulation areas. Simulation experiments were also conducted to analyse the system performance over multiple sessions. The results suggest that the system is able to adapt therapy plans overtime in response to changing levels of impairment/performance while supporting therapists to tune and evaluate therapy plans more effectively
