Integrated optimization of nonlinear R/C frames with reliability constraints
A structural optimization algorithm was researched including global displacements as decision variables. The algorithm was applied to planar reinforced concrete frames with nonlinear material behavior submitted to static loading. The flexural performance of the elements was evaluated as a function of the actual stress-strain diagrams of the materials. Formation of rotational hinges with strain hardening were allowed and the equilibrium constraints were updated accordingly. The adequacy of the frames was guaranteed by imposing as constraints required reliability indices for the members, maximum global displacements for the structure and a maximum system probability of failure
On affine scaling inexact dogleg methods for bound-constrained nonlinear systems
Within the framework of affine scaling trust-region methods for bound constrained problems, we discuss the use of a inexact dogleg method as a tool for simultaneously handling the trust-region and the bound constraints while seeking for an approximate minimizer of the model. Focusing on bound-constrained systems of nonlinear equations, an inexact affine scaling method for large scale problems, employing the inexact dogleg procedure, is described. Global convergence results are established without any Lipschitz assumption on the Jacobian matrix, and locally fast convergence is shown under standard assumptions. Convergence analysis is performed without specifying the scaling matrix used to handle the bounds, and a rather general class of scaling matrices is allowed in actual algorithms. Numerical results showing the performance of the method are also given
Sensor Deployment for Network-like Environments
This paper considers the problem of optimally deploying omnidirectional
sensors, with potentially limited sensing radius, in a network-like
environment. This model provides a compact and effective description of complex
environments as well as a proper representation of road or river networks. We
present a two-step procedure based on a discrete-time gradient ascent algorithm
to find a local optimum for this problem. The first step performs a coarse
optimization where sensors are allowed to move in the plane, to vary their
sensing radius and to make use of a reduced model of the environment called
collapsed network. It is made up of a finite discrete set of points,
barycenters, produced by collapsing network edges. Sensors can be also
clustered to reduce the complexity of this phase. The sensors' positions found
in the first step are then projected on the network and used in the second
finer optimization, where sensors are constrained to move only on the network.
The second step can be performed on-line, in a distributed fashion, by sensors
moving in the real environment, and can make use of the full network as well as
of the collapsed one. The adoption of a less constrained initial optimization
has the merit of reducing the negative impact of the presence of a large number
of local optima. The effectiveness of the presented procedure is illustrated by
a simulated deployment problem in an airport environment
