    Trust Based Fuzzy Linguistic Recommender Systems as Reinforcement for Personalized Education in the Field of Oral Surgery and Implantology

    The rapid advances in Web technologies are promoting the development of new pedagogic models based on virtual teaching. In this framework, personalized services are necessary. Recommender systems can be used in an academic environment to assist users in their teaching-learning processes. In this paper, we present a trust based recommender system, adopting a fuzzy linguistic modeling, that provides personalized activities to students in order to reinforce their education, and applied it in the field of oral surgery and implantology. We don’t take into account users with similar ratings history but users in which each user can trust and we provide a method to aggregate the trust information. This system can be used in order to aid professors to provide students with a personalized monitoring of their studies with less effort.     Recommendation using DMF-based fine tuning method

Recommender Systems (RS) have been comprehensively analyzed in the past decade, Matrix Factorization (MF)-based Collaborative Filtering (CF) method has been proved to be an useful model to improve the performance of recommendation. Factors that inferred from item rating patterns shows the vectors which are useful for MF to characterize both items and users. A recommendation can concluded from good correspondence between item and user factors. A basic MF model starts with an object function, which is consisted of the squared error between original training matrix and predicted matrix as well as the regularization term (regularization parameters). To learn the predicted matrix, recommender systems minimize the squared error which has been regularized. However, two important details have been ignored: (1) the predicted matrix will be more and more accuracy as the iterations carried out, then a fix value of regularization parameters may not be the most suitable choice. (2) the final distribution trend of ratings of predicted matrix is not similar with the original training matrix. Therefore, we propose a Dynamic-MF algorithm and fine tuning method which is quite general to overcome the mentioned detail problems. Some other information, such as social relations, etc, can be easily incorporated into this method (model). The experimental analysis on two large datasets demonstrates that our approaches outperform the basic MF-based method

    Integrating Ontologies and Fuzzy Logic to Represent User-Trustworthiness in Recommender Systems

In the literature we can find sundry approaches for generating personalized recommendations and all of them make use of different users’ and/or items’ features. Building accurate profiles plays an essential role in this context, so that the system's success depend to a large extent on the ability of the learned profiles to represent the user's preferences. An ontology works very well to characterize the users profiles. In this paper we develop an ontology to characterize the trust between users using the fuzzy linguistic modelling, this way in the recommendation generation process we do not take into account users with similar ratings history but users in which each user can trust.     Trust and Distrust Aggregation Enhanced with Path Length Incorporation

    Trust networks are social networks in which users can assign trust scores to each other. In order to estimate these scores for agents that are indirectly connected through the network, a range of trust score aggregators has been proposed. Currently, none of them takes into account the length of the paths that connect users; however, this appears to be a critical factor since longer paths generally contain less reliable information.     An improved model for trust-aware recommender systems based on multi-faceted trust

    As customers enjoy the convenience of online shopping today, they face the problem of selecting from hundreds of thousands of products. Recommender systems, which make recommendations by matching products to customers based on the features of the products and the purchasing history of customers, are increasingly being incorporated into e-commerce websites. Collaborative filtering is a major approach to design algorithms for these systems. Much research has been directed toward enhancing the performance of recommender systems by considering various psychological and behavioural factors affecting the behaviour of users, e.g. trust and emotion. While e-commerce firms are keen to exploit information on social trust available on social networks to improve their services, conventional trust-aware collaborative filtering does not consider the multi-facets of social trust. In this research, we assume that a consumer tends to trust different people for recommendations on different types of product. For example, a user trusts a certain reviewer on popular items but may not place as much trust on the same reviewer on unpopular items. Furthermore, this thesis postulates that if we, as online shoppers, choose to establish trust on an individual while we ourselves are reviewing certain products, we value this individual’s opinions on these products and we most likely will value his/her opinions on similar products in future. Based on the above assumptions, this thesis proposes a new collaborative filtering algorithm for deriving multi-faceted trust based on trust establishment time. Experimental results based on historical data from Epinions show that the new algorithm can perform better in terms of accuracy when compared with conventional algorithms

    Recommendations based on social links

    The goal of this chapter is to give an overview of recent works on the development of social link-based recommender systems and to offer insights on related issues, as well as future directions for research. Among several kinds of social recommendations, this chapter focuses on recommendations, which are based on users’ self-defined (i.e., explicit) social links and suggest items, rather than people of interest. The chapter starts by reviewing the needs for social link-based recommendations and studies that explain the viability of social networks as useful information sources. Following that, the core part of the chapter dissects and examines modern research on social link-based recommendations along several dimensions. It concludes with a discussion of several important issues and future directions for social link-based recommendation research

    A Trust Management Framework for Decision Support Systems

    In the era of information explosion, it is critical to develop a framework which can extract useful information and help people to make “educated” decisions. In our lives, whether we are aware of it, trust has turned out to be very helpful for us to make decisions. At the same time, cognitive trust, especially in large systems, such as Facebook, Twitter, and so on, needs support from computer systems. Therefore, we need a framework that can effectively, but also intuitively, let people express their trust, and enable the system to automatically and securely summarize the massive amounts of trust information, so that a user of the system can make “educated” decisions, or at least not blind decisions. Inspired by the similarities between human trust and physical measurements, this dissertation proposes a measurement theory based trust management framework. It consists of three phases: trust modeling, trust inference, and decision making. Instead of proposing specific trust inference formulas, this dissertation proposes a fundamental framework which is flexible and can be adapted by many different inference formulas. Validation experiments are done on two data sets: the Epinions.com data set and the Twitter data set. This dissertation also adapts the measurement theory based trust management framework for two decision support applications. In the first application, the real stock market data is used as ground truth for the measurement theory based trust management framework. Basically, the correlation between the sentiment expressed on Twitter and stock market data is measured. Compared with existing works which do not differentiate tweets’ authors, this dissertation analyzes trust among stock investors on Twitter and uses the trust network to differentiate tweets’ authors. The results show that by using the measurement theory based trust framework, Twitter sentiment valence is able to reflect abnormal stock returns better than treating all the authors as equally important or weighting them by their number of followers. In the second application, the measurement theory based trust management framework is used to help to detect and prevent from being attacked in cloud computing scenarios. In this application, each single flow is treated as a measurement. The simulation results show that the measurement theory based trust management framework is able to provide guidance for cloud administrators and customers to make decisions, e.g. migrating tasks from suspect nodes to trustworthy nodes, dynamically allocating resources according to trust information, and managing the trade-off between the degree of redundancy and the cost of resources
