Application of advanced on-board processing concepts to future satellite communications systems
An initial definition of on-board processing requirements for an advanced satellite communications system to service domestic markets in the 1990's is presented. An exemplar system architecture with both RF on-board switching and demodulation/remodulation baseband processing was used to identify important issues related to system implementation, cost, and technology development
Contribution to resource management in cellular access networks with limited backhaul capacity
La interfaz radio de los sistemas de comunicaciones móviles es normalmente considerada como
la única limitación de capacidad en la red de acceso radio. Sin embargo, a medida que se van
desplegando nuevas y más eficientes interfaces radio, y de que el tráfico de datos y multimedia va
en aumento, existe la creciente preocupación de que la infraestructura de transporte (backhaul) de
la red celular pueda convertirse en el cuello de botella en algunos escenarios. En este contexto, la
tesis se centra en el desarrollo de técnicas de gestión de recursos que consideran de manera
conjunta la gestión de recursos en la interfaz radio y el backhaul. Esto conduce a un nuevo
paradigma donde los recursos del backhaul se consideran no sólo en la etapa de dimensionamiento,
sino que además son incluidos en la problemática de gestión de recursos.
Sobre esta base, el primer objetivo de la tesis consiste en evaluar los requerimientos de
capacidad en las redes de acceso radio que usan IP como tecnología de transporte, de acuerdo a las
recientes tendencias de la arquitectura de red. En particular, se analiza el impacto que tiene una
solución de transporte basada en IP sobre la capacidad de transporte necesaria para satisfacer los
requisitos de calidad de servicio en la red de acceso. La evaluación se realiza en el contexto de la
red de acceso radio de UMTS, donde se proporciona una caracterización detallada de la interfaz
Iub. El análisis de requerimientos de capacidad se lleva a cabo para dos diferentes escenarios:
canales dedicados y canales de alta velocidad. Posteriormente, con el objetivo de aprovechar
totalmente los recursos disponibles en el acceso radio y el backhaul, esta tesis propone un marco de
gestión conjunta de recursos donde la idea principal consiste en incorporar las métricas de la red de
transporte dentro del problema de gestión de recursos. A fin de evaluar los beneficios del marco de
gestión de recursos propuesto, esta tesis se centra en la evaluación del problema de asignación de
base, como estrategia para distribuir el tráfico entre las estaciones base en función de los niveles de
carga tanto en la interfaz radio como en el backhaul. Este problema se analiza inicialmente
considerando una red de acceso radio genérica, mediante la definición de un modelo analítico
basado en cadenas de Markov. Dicho modelo permite calcular la ganancia de capacidad que puede
alcanzar la estrategia de asignación de base propuesta. Posteriormente, el análisis de la estrategia
propuesta se extiende considerando tecnologías específicas de acceso radio. En particular, en el
contexto de redes WCDMA se desarrolla un algoritmo de asignación de base basado en simulatedannealing
cuyo objetivo es maximizar una función de utilidad que refleja el grado de satisfacción
de las asignaciones respecto los recursos radio y transporte. Finalmente, esta tesis aborda el diseño
y evaluación de un algoritmo de asignación de base para los futuros sistemas de banda ancha
basados en OFDMA. En este caso, el problema de asignación de base se modela como un problema
de optimización mediante el uso de un marco de funciones de utilidad y funciones de coste de
recursos. El problema planteado, que considera que existen restricciones de recursos tanto en la
interfaz radio como en el backhaul, es mapeado a un problema de optimización conocido como
Multiple-Choice Multidimensional Knapsack Problem (MMKP). Posteriormente, se desarrolla un
algoritmo de asignación de base heurístico, el cual es evaluado y comparado con esquemas de
asignación basados exclusivamente en criterios radio. El algoritmo concebido se basa en el uso de
los multiplicadores de Lagrange y está diseñado para aprovechar de manera simultánea el balanceo
de carga en la intefaz radio y el backhaul.Postprint (published version
On-board processing for future satellite communications systems: Satellite-Routed FDMA
A frequency division multiple access (FDMA) 30/20 GHz satellite communications architecture without on-board baseband processing is investigated. Conceptual system designs are suggested for domestic traffic models totaling 4 Gb/s of customer premises service (CPS) traffic and 6 Gb/s of trunking traffic. Emphasis is given to the CPS portion of the system which includes thousands of earth terminals with digital traffic ranging from a single 64 kb/s voice channel to hundreds of channels of voice, data, and video with an aggregate data rate of 33 Mb/s. A unique regional design concept that effectively smooths the non-uniform traffic distribution and greatly simplifies the satellite design is employed. The satellite antenna system forms thirty-two 0.33 deg beam on both the uplinks and the downlinks in one design. In another design matched to a traffic model with more dispersed users, there are twenty-four 0.33 deg beams and twenty-one 0.7 deg beams. Detailed system design techniques show that a single satellite producing approximately 5 kW of dc power is capable of handling at least 75% of the postulated traffic. Study of advanced communications satellite systems based on SS-FDMA
A satellite communication system based on the use of a multiple, contiguous beam satellite antenna and frequency division multiple access (FDMA) is studied. Emphasis is on the evaluation of the feasibility of SS (satellite switching) FDMA technology, particularly the multiple, contiguous beam antenna, the onboard switch and channelization, and on methods to overcome the effects of severe Ka band fading caused by precipitation. This technology is evaluated and plans for technology development and evaluation are given. The application of SS-FDMA to domestic satellite communications is also evaluated. Due to the potentially low cost Earth stations, SS-FDMA is particularly attractive for thin route applications up to several hundred kilobits per second, and offers the potential for competing with terrestrial facilities at low data rates and over short routes. The onboard switch also provides added route flexibility for heavy route systems. The key beneficial SS-FDMA strategy is to simplify and thus reduce the cost of the direct access Earth station at the expense of increased satellite complexity
Technology Assessment for the Future Aeronautical Communications System
To address emerging saturation in the VHF aeronautical bands allocated internationally for air traffic management communications, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has requested development of a common global solution through its Aeronautical Communications Panel (ACP). In response, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Eurocontrol initiated a joint study, with the support of NASA and U.S. and European contractors, to provide major findings on alternatives and recommendations to the ICAO ACP Working Group C (WG-C). Under an FAA/Eurocontrol cooperative research and development agreement, ACP WG-C Action Plan 17 (AP-17), commonly referred to as the Future Communications Study (FCS), NASA Glenn Research Center is responsible for the investigation of potential communications technologies that support the long-term mobile communication operational concepts of the FCS. This report documents the results of the first phase of the technology assessment and recommendations referred to in the Technology Pre-Screening Task 3.1 of AP-17. The prescreening identifies potential technologies that are under development in the industry and provides an initial assessment against a harmonized set of evaluation criteria that address high level capabilities, projected maturity for the time frame for usage in aviation, and potential applicability to aviation. A forecast of demand for telecommunications services through the year 2000 is presented with particular reference to demand for satellite communications. Estimates of demand are provided for voice, video, and data services and for various subcategories of these services. The results are converted to a common digital measure in terms of terabits per year and aggregated to obtain total demand projections

Study of repeater technology for advanced multifunctional communications satellites
Investigations are presented concerning design concepts and implementation approaches for the satellite communication repeater subsystems of advanced multifunctional satellites. In such systems the important concepts are the use of multiple antenna beams, repeater switching (routing), and efficient spectrum utilization through frequency reuse. An information base on these techniques was developed and tradeoff analyses were made of repeater design concepts, with the work design taken in a broad sense to include modulation beam coverage patterns. There were five major areas of study: requirements analysis and processing; study of interbeam interference in multibeam systems; characterization of multiple-beam switching repeaters; estimation of repeater weight and power for a number of alternatives; and tradeoff analyses based on these weight and power data
