Assessing Ecosystem Services in Mangroves: Insights from São Tomé Island (Central Africa)
Mangroves are some of the most productive coastal systems on the planet and provide valuable ecosystem services (ES). They are especially important in threatened ecosystems and developing countries, where they are likely to have direct impacts on local communities. An approach based on ES allows assessing ecosystems across the domains of ecology, sociology and economy. This study focused on the evaluation of ES in mangroves and started by creating a comprehensive global list of mangrove ES based on the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. These services were then quantified using the best available indicators for mangrove systems. The mangroves of Diogo Nunes, São João dos Angolares and Malanza, located in the São Tomé Island, were used to illustrate the challenges in applying ES indicators in this type of ecosystems. The obtained results confirmed that mangroves can provide important and diverse services. However, the high variability among mangrove systems affects their ability to deliver ES, requiring caution for the extrapolation across regions. Soil health and ecosystem services: Lessons from sub-Sahara Africa (SSA)
Management practices to improve soil health influence several ecosystem services including regulation of water
flows, changes in soil biodiversity and greenhouse gases that are important at local, regional and global levels.
Unfortunately, the primary focus in soil health management over the years has been increasing crop productivity
and to some extent the associated economics and use efficiencies of inputs. There are now efforts to study the
inter-relationship of associated ecosystem effects of soil health management considering that sustainable intensification
cannot occur without conscious recognition of these associated non-provisioning ecosystem services.
This review documents the current knowledge of ecosystem services for key management practices based
on experiences from agricultural lands in sub-Sahara Africa (SSA). Here, practicing conservation agriculture
(CA) and Integrated Soil fertility management (ISFM) have overall positive benefits on increasing infiltration
(> 44), reducing runoff (> 30%) and soil erosion (> 33%) and increases soil biodiversity. While ISFM and
Agroforestry increase provisioning of fuelwood, fodder and food, the effect of CA on the provisioning of food is
unclear. Also, considering long-term perspectives, none of the studied soil health promoting practices are increasing
soil organic carbon (SOC). Annual contributions to greenhouse gases are generally low (< 3 kg N2O
ha−1) with few exceptions. Nitrogen leaching vary widely, from 0.2 to over 200 kg N ha−1 and are sometimes
inconsistent with N inputs. This summary of key considerations for evaluating practices from multiple perspectives
including provisioning, regulating, supporting and cultural ecosystem services is important to inform
future soil health policy and research initiatives in SSA
A synthesis of past, current and future research for protection and management of papyrus (Cyperus papyrus L.) wetlands in Africa
Papyrus wetlands (dominated by the giant
sedge Cyperus papyrus L.) occur throughout eastern,
central and southern Africa and are important for
biodiversity, for water quality and quantity regulation
and for the livelihoods of millions of people. To draw
attention to the importance of papyrus wetlands, a
special session entitled ‘‘The ecology of livelihoods in
papyrus wetlands’’ was organized at the 9th INTECOL
Wetlands Conference in Orlando, Florida in June
2012. Papers from the session, combined with additional
contributions, were collected in a special issue
of Wetlands Ecology and Management. The current
paper reviews ecological and hydrological characteristics
of papyrus wetlands, summarizes their ecosystem
services and sustainable use, provides an
overview of papyrus research to date, and looks at
policy development for papyrus wetlands. Based on
this review, the paper provides a synthesis of research
and policy priorities for papyrus wetlands and introduces
the contributions in the special issue. Main
conclusions are that (1) there is a need for better
estimates of the area covered by papyrus wetlands.
Limited evidence suggests that the loss of papyrus
wetlands is rapid in some areas; (2) there is a need for a
better understanding and modelling of the regulating
services of papyrus wetlands to support trade-off
analysis and improve economic valuation; (3) research
on papyrus wetlands should include assessment of all
ecosystem services (provisioning, regulating, habitat,
cultural) so that trade-offs can be determined as the
basis for sustainable management strategies (‘wise
use’); (4) more research on the governance, institutional
and socio-economic aspects of papyrus wetlands
is needed to assist African governments in
dealing with the challenges of conserving wetlands in
the face of growing food security needs and climate
change. The papers in the special issue address a

Exploring the future land use-biodiversity-climate nexus in East Africa: an application of participatory scenario analysis
Climate change and land-use-land-cover change (LULCC) are expected to have major impacts on global biodiversity. In highly diverse tropical moist forests, future biodiversity trajectories will also depend on political and societal will to undertake the changes needed to reduce those impacts. We present a framework to build participatory spatially-explicit scenarios that can be used to analyse the biodiversity-climate-land-change tradeoffs, which we applied at different scales in East Africa. In Tanzania, under the business-as-usual pattern of economic growth, the Eastern Arc Mountains forests and biodiversity will be heavily impacted on, with increasing pressure on protected areas. Increasing variability of rainfall and temperature are likely to impact on where the LULCC are going to be, with the mountains likely to be refuges that are even more important for local communities. That may intensify impacts on biodiversity. In Taita Hills (Kenya) and Jimma Highlands (Ethiopia), stakeholders expected that adaptation interventions to climate change would generally improve biodiversity state. Preliminary data on birds community diversity in Taita Hills showed that though agroforestry system supports higher diversity than natural forest, species richness of rarer forest specialists remained highest within natural forests. Anticipating future conservation and agriculture interaction under climate change may contribute to set spatial priorities for intervention sites. Further investigations are required that could benefit from integrating local stakeholders’ perceptions and visions for the future
Blue harvest: inland fisheries as an ecosystem service
Global food production has increased greatly in recent years and rural livelihoods are much improved in many regions. Yet, despite this clear progress rural poverty and food insecurity remain deeply entrenched in many areas, especially in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. In response the international community has renewed calls for increased commitment to meeting the needs of the world's poor.
