Modeling musicological information as trigrams in a system for simultaneous chord and local key extraction
In this paper, we discuss the introduction of a trigram musicological model in a simultaneous chord and local key extraction system. By enlarging the context of the musicological model, we hoped to achieve a higher accuracy that could justify the associated higher complexity and computational load of the search for the optimal solution. Experiments on multiple data sets have demonstrated that the trigram model has indeed a larger predictive power (a lower perplexity). This raised predictive power resulted in an improvement in the key extraction capabilities, but no improvement in chord extraction when compared to a system with a bigram musicological model
Dialogue Act Modeling for Automatic Tagging and Recognition of Conversational Speech
We describe a statistical approach for modeling dialogue acts in
conversational speech, i.e., speech-act-like units such as Statement, Question,
Backchannel, Agreement, Disagreement, and Apology. Our model detects and
predicts dialogue acts based on lexical, collocational, and prosodic cues, as
well as on the discourse coherence of the dialogue act sequence. The dialogue
model is based on treating the discourse structure of a conversation as a
hidden Markov model and the individual dialogue acts as observations emanating
from the model states. Constraints on the likely sequence of dialogue acts are
modeled via a dialogue act n-gram. The statistical dialogue grammar is combined
with word n-grams, decision trees, and neural networks modeling the
idiosyncratic lexical and prosodic manifestations of each dialogue act. We
develop a probabilistic integration of speech recognition with dialogue
modeling, to improve both speech recognition and dialogue act classification
accuracy. Models are trained and evaluated using a large hand-labeled database
of 1,155 conversations from the Switchboard corpus of spontaneous
human-to-human telephone speech. We achieved good dialogue act labeling
accuracy (65% based on errorful, automatically recognized words and prosody,
and 71% based on word transcripts, compared to a chance baseline accuracy of

Dual Language Models for Code Switched Speech Recognition
In this work, we present a simple and elegant approach to language modeling
for bilingual code-switched text. Since code-switching is a blend of two or
more different languages, a standard bilingual language model can be improved
upon by using structures of the monolingual language models. We propose a novel
technique called dual language models, which involves building two
complementary monolingual language models and combining them using a
probabilistic model for switching between the two. We evaluate the efficacy of
our approach using a conversational Mandarin-English speech corpus. We prove
the robustness of our model by showing significant improvements in perplexity
measures over the standard bilingual language model without the use of any
external information. Similar consistent improvements are also reflected in

Speaker diarization of multi-party conversations using participants role information: political debates and professional meetings
Speaker Diarization aims at inferring who spoke when in an audio stream and involves two simultaneous unsupervised tasks: (1) the estimation of the number of speakers, and (2) the association of speech segments to each speaker. Most of the recent efforts in the domain have addressed the problem using machine learning techniques or statistical methods (for a review see [11]) ignoring the fact that the data consists of instances of human conversations
An Empirical Evaluation of Zero Resource Acoustic Unit Discovery
Acoustic unit discovery (AUD) is a process of automatically identifying a
categorical acoustic unit inventory from speech and producing corresponding
acoustic unit tokenizations. AUD provides an important avenue for unsupervised
acoustic model training in a zero resource setting where expert-provided
linguistic knowledge and transcribed speech are unavailable. Therefore, to
further facilitate zero-resource AUD process, in this paper, we demonstrate
acoustic feature representations can be significantly improved by (i)
performing linear discriminant analysis (LDA) in an unsupervised self-trained
fashion, and (ii) leveraging resources of other languages through building a
multilingual bottleneck (BN) feature extractor to give effective cross-lingual
generalization. Moreover, we perform comprehensive evaluations of AUD efficacy
on multiple downstream speech applications, and their correlated performance
suggests that AUD evaluations are feasible using different alternative language
resources when only a subset of these evaluation resources can be available in

n-gram Frequency Ranking with additional sources of information in a multiple-Gaussian classifier for Language Identification
We present new results of our n-gram frequency ranking used for language identification. We use a Parallel phone recognizer (as in PPRLM), but instead of the language model, we create a ranking with the most frequent n-grams. Then we compute the distance between the input sentence ranking and each language ranking, based on the difference in relative positions for each n-gram. The objective of this ranking is to model reliably a longer span than PPRLM. This approach overcomes PPRLM (15% relative improvement) due to the inclusion of 4-gram and 5-gram in the classifier. We will also see that the combination of this technique with other sources of information (feature vectors in our classifier) is also advantageous over PPRLM, showing also a detailed analysis of the relevance of these sources and a simple feature selection technique to cope with long feature vectors. The test database has been significantly increased using cross-fold validation, so comparisons are now more reliable
