The Future of Mobile Industry
This paper discusses the future of mobile industry along with some of the background
leading to the emergence of wireless technology. First, it gives an overview of today’s
telecommunication network and the major differences between fixed wired networks and
wireless networks. The discussion then focuses on the challenges facing the wireless
industry and the way out through aggressive innovation by employing Wireless Intelligence
Network (WIN) technology. The paper also discusses some important trends in wireless
industry and the customers expectations which are also part of the challenges for the
mobile industry. Finally particular reference is made to the developing nations especially

Verifying service continuity in a satellite reconfiguration procedure: application to a satellite
The paper discusses the use of the TURTLE UML profile to model and verify service continuity during dynamic reconfiguration of embedded software, and space-based telecommunication software in particular. TURTLE extends UML class diagrams with composition operators, and activity diagrams with temporal operators. Translating TURTLE to the formal description technique RT-LOTOS gives the profile a formal semantics and makes it possible to reuse verification techniques implemented by the RTL, the RT-LOTOS toolkit developed at LAAS-CNRS. The paper proposes a modeling and formal validation methodology based on TURTLE and RTL, and discusses its application to a payload software application in charge of an embedded packet switch. The paper demonstrates the benefits of using TURTLE to prove service continuity for dynamic reconfiguration of embedded software

Outsourcing information systems: Drawing lessons from a banking case study
Financial and costs benefits are often put forward as the reasons why organisations decide to outsource.
Emerging patterns and trends indicate that today’s outsourcing decisions are often motivated by factors
other than cost. Thus, the decision-making process is more complex than it may at first appear. This paper
presents findings from a case study from an organisation in the UK banking sector that was motivated to
outsource aspects of its information technology/information system (IT/IS). The underlying motives and
decision-making process that influenced the bank outsource its IT/IS are presented and discussed. Findings
from the case study suggest political perspectives, as well as human and organisational issues influenced
the bank’s strategic decision-making to outsource certain aspects of its business. An examination of the
case study findings suggests that cost alone is not always responsible for decisions to outsource, as it was
found the bank’s outsourcing decision was driven by a series of complex, interrelated motives in a bid to
reduce the risks and uncertainties of managing its own technology. Considering the complex nature of the
outsourcing process a frame of reference that can be used to assist managers with their decision to outsource
IT/IS is propagated. The case study is used to present an organisation’s experiences as to how and why it
decided to outsource its IS and thus offers a learning opportunity for other organisations facing similar
difficulties. In addition, the case study findings highlight the need to focus greater attention on discriminating
between the short and long-term consequences of IT/IS decision-makin
Distributed control in virtualized networks
The increasing number of the Internet connected devices requires novel solutions to control the next generation network resources. The cooperation between the Software Defined Network (SDN) and the Network Function Virtualization (NFV) seems to be a promising technology paradigm. The bottleneck of current SDN/NFV implementations is the use of a centralized controller. In this paper, different scenarios to identify the pro and cons of a distributed control-plane were investigated. We implemented a prototypal framework to benchmark different centralized and distributed approaches. The test results have been critically analyzed and related considerations and recommendations have been reported. The outcome of our research influenced the control plane design of the following European R&D projects: PLATINO, FI-WARE and T-NOVA

A business planning framework for WiMAX applications
Mobile networking refers to wireless technologies which provide communications between devices. Applications for mobile networking have a broad scope as they can be applied to many situations in either industrial or commercial sectors. The challenge for firms is to better match market-induced variability to the organizational issues and systems necessary for technological innovation. This chapter develops a business planning framework for mobile networking applications. This framework recognises the fluidity of the situation when trying to anticipate and model emerging wireless applications. Smart grid architecture for rural distribution networks: application to a Spanish pilot network
This paper presents a novel architecture for rural distribution grids. This architecture is designed to modernize traditional rural networks into new Smart Grid ones. The architecture tackles innovation actions on both the power plane and the management plane of the system. In the power plane, the architecture focuses on exploiting the synergies between telecommunications and innovative technologies based on power electronics managing low scale electrical storage. In the management plane, a decentralized management system is proposed based on the addition of two new agents assisting the typical Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) system of distribution system operators. Altogether, the proposed architecture enables operators to use more effectively—in an automated and decentralized way—weak rural distribution systems, increasing the capability to integrate new distributed energy resources. This architecture is being implemented in a real Pilot Network located in Spain, in the frame of the European Smart Rural Grid project. The paper also includes a study case showing one of the potentialities of one of the principal technologies developed in the project and underpinning the realization of the new architecture: the so-called Intelligent Distribution Power Router.Postprint (published version
