Efficient Machine-type Communication using Multi-metric Context-awareness for Cars used as Mobile Sensors in Upcoming 5G Networks
Upcoming 5G-based communication networks will be confronted with huge
increases in the amount of transmitted sensor data related to massive
deployments of static and mobile Internet of Things (IoT) systems. Cars acting
as mobile sensors will become important data sources for cloud-based
applications like predictive maintenance and dynamic traffic forecast. Due to
the limitation of available communication resources, it is expected that the
grows in Machine-Type Communication (MTC) will cause severe interference with
Human-to-human (H2H) communication. Consequently, more efficient transmission
methods are highly required. In this paper, we present a probabilistic scheme
for efficient transmission of vehicular sensor data which leverages favorable
channel conditions and avoids transmissions when they are expected to be highly
resource-consuming. Multiple variants of the proposed scheme are evaluated in
comprehensive realworld experiments. Through machine learning based combination
of multiple context metrics, the proposed scheme is able to achieve up to 164%
higher average data rate values for sensor applications with soft deadline
requirements compared to regular periodic transmission.Comment: Best Student Paper Awar
MADServer: An Architecture for Opportunistic Mobile Advanced Delivery
Rapid increases in cellular data traffic demand creative alternative delivery vectors for data. Despite the conceptual attractiveness of mobile data offloading, no concrete web server architectures integrate intelligent offloading in a production-ready and easily deployable manner without relying on vast infrastructural changes to carriers’ networks. Delay-tolerant networking technology offers the means to do just this. We introduce MADServer, a novel DTN-based architecture for mobile data offloading that splits web con- tent among multiple independent delivery vectors based on user and data context. It enables intelligent data offload- ing, caching, and querying solutions which can be incorporated in a manner that still satisfies user expectations for timely delivery. At the same time, it allows for users who have poor or expensive connections to the cellular network to leverage multi-hop opportunistic routing to send and receive data. We also present a preliminary implementation of MADServer and provide real-world performance evaluations
Performance Analysis of Micro Unmanned Airborne Communication Relays for Cellular Networks
This paper analyses the potential of utilising small unmanned-aerial-vehicles
(SUAV) as wireless relays for assisting cellular network performance. Whilst
high altitude wireless relays have been investigated over the past 2 decades,
the new class of low cost SUAVs offers new possibilities for addressing local
traffic imbalances and providing emergency coverage. We present field-test
results from an SUAV test-bed in both urban and rural environments. The results
show that trough-to-peak throughput improvements can be achieved for users in
poor coverage zones. Furthermore, the paper reinforces the experimental study
with large-scale network analysis using both stochastic geometry and multi-cell
simulation results.Comment: conferenc
On Optimal and Fair Service Allocation in Mobile Cloud Computing
This paper studies the optimal and fair service allocation for a variety of
mobile applications (single or group and collaborative mobile applications) in
mobile cloud computing. We exploit the observation that using tiered clouds,
i.e. clouds at multiple levels (local and public) can increase the performance
and scalability of mobile applications. We proposed a novel framework to model
mobile applications as a location-time workflows (LTW) of tasks; here users
mobility patterns are translated to mobile service usage patterns. We show that
an optimal mapping of LTWs to tiered cloud resources considering multiple QoS
goals such application delay, device power consumption and user cost/price is
an NP-hard problem for both single and group-based applications. We propose an
efficient heuristic algorithm called MuSIC that is able to perform well (73% of
optimal, 30% better than simple strategies), and scale well to a large number
of users while ensuring high mobile application QoS. We evaluate MuSIC and the
2-tier mobile cloud approach via implementation (on real world clouds) and
extensive simulations using rich mobile applications like intensive signal
processing, video streaming and multimedia file sharing applications. Our
experimental and simulation results indicate that MuSIC supports scalable
operation (100+ concurrent users executing complex workflows) while improving
QoS. We observe about 25% lower delays and power (under fixed price
constraints) and about 35% decrease in price (considering fixed delay) in
comparison to only using the public cloud. Our studies also show that MuSIC
performs quite well under different mobility patterns, e.g. random waypoint and

CHARACTERIZATION OF HOTSPOT COVERAGE PLAN IN 2.4/ 5GHZ FREQUENCY BAND (NNAMDI AZIKIWE UNIVERSITY, NIGERIA, AS A CASE STUDY)
Research and tertiary institutions today uses wireless connectivity owing to the benefits of mobility flow-awarecommunication and flexibility advantages generally. In this case, mobility computing involving the use of smartdevices, laptops, wifi-desktops, etc, largely depends on a deployed hotspot infrastructure. In particular, the physicalposition of the mobile system (and hence of the user) and the hotspot infrastructure design layout are fundamentalconsiderations for service efficiency. While previous works have focused on user position estimation, signal strengthquality and network QoS, this work leverages the contemporary challenges of network connectivity in tertiaryinstitutions in Nigeria with respect to optimal coverage and cost minimization. Using Nnamdi Azikiwe University-Unizik, Awka as testbed, we carried out a study on hotspot/WLAN IEEE 802.11 deployments while devising a costeffective coverage plan in 2,4/5GHz frequency band. A mathematical model on cost optimization for WLANHotpot project processes was developed using Linear programming, the installation procedure, coverage plan basedon specifications of the deployment hardware, and data security were covered in this work. Consequently, from themodel, we argue that with careful selection of optimization criteria in the deployment, an efficient design cost plan, and QoS, could eliminate possible trade-offs in the deployment contexts by over 95%.Keywords: Mobility, Flow-aware, Hotspot, Infrastructure, Optimization, Design, Minimizatio
