Low-Power Human-Machine Interfaces: Analysis And Design
Human-Machine Interaction (HMI) systems, once used for clinical applications, have recently reached a broader set of scenarios, such as industrial, gaming, learning, and health tracking thanks to advancements in Digital Signal Processing (DSP) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques. A growing trend is to integrate computational capabilities into wearable devices to reduce power consumption associated with wireless data transfer while providing a natural and unobtrusive way of interaction. However, current platforms can barely cope with the computational complexity introduced by the required feature extraction and classification algorithms without compromising the battery life and the overall intrusiveness of the system. Thus, highly-wearable and real-time HMIs are yet to be introduced.
Designing and implementing highly energy-efficient biosignal devices demands a fine-tuning to meet the constraints typically required in everyday scenarios. This thesis work tackles these challenges in specific case studies, devising solutions based on bioelectrical signals, namely EEG and EMG, for advanced hand gesture recognition.
The implementation of these systems followed a complete analysis to reduce the overall intrusiveness of the system through sensor design and miniaturization of the hardware implementation. Several solutions have been studied to cope with the computational complexity of the DSP algorithms, including commercial single-core and open-source Parallel Ultra Low Power architectures, that have been selected accordingly also to reduce the overall system power consumption. By further adding energy harvesting techniques combined with the firmware and hardware optimization, the systems achieved self-sustainable operation or a significant boost in battery life.
The HMI platforms presented are entirely programmable and provide computational power to satisfy the requirements of the studies applications while employing only a fraction of the CPU resources, giving the perspective of further application more advanced paradigms for the next generation of real-time embedded biosignal processing
Data Analysis study based on Consumer Behavior on Soft Drinks Produced by Coca-Cola India in North Region
The Coca-Cola Plant is one of the biggest names in FMCG market in India. It covers 60 percent of soft drink market and also covers drinking water market of India. The Coca-Cola is itself a popular brand with soft drink products among every person from child to old age people. This work mainly presents an analytical study on consumer behavior on soft drinks related to coca-cola India plant. The study was held in the 4 region of India which are Chandigarh, Ambala, Rohtak and Nabipur. Data was collected by the survey and some important observations are concluded. Out of 310 respondents 59.67% respondents are male and 40.32% are female respondents were participated in this survey. The survey is based on age, qualification and area of residence. Maximum male in this region are in favor for stop unhealthy practice in soft drink companies by government. It covers mainly four areas in North region and analysis is done on basis of respondents score
Semantic discovery and reuse of business process patterns
Patterns currently play an important role in modern information systems (IS) development and their use has mainly been restricted to the design and implementation phases of the development lifecycle. Given the increasing significance of business modelling in IS development, patterns have the potential of providing a viable solution for promoting reusability of recurrent generalized models in the very early stages of development. As a statement of research-in-progress this paper focuses on business process patterns and proposes an initial methodological framework for the discovery and reuse of business process patterns within the IS development lifecycle. The framework borrows ideas from the domain engineering literature and proposes the use of semantics to drive both the discovery of patterns as well as their reuse
Assessment and optimisation of wearable activity monitors within an enhanced recovery framework
Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) is a model of care that aims to improve patient recovery after surgery. Wearable activity monitors (WAMs) have the potential to provide possible solutions to a wide range of clinical challenges. The aim of this thesis was to assess whether physical activity, measured by a WAM, can be used as a measurable marker of peri-operative well-being and recovery after surgery, and whether the WAM can therefore be used to assess and help improve recovery after surgery.
A wrist-worn WAM was utilised to measure physical activity in a healthy normal cohort showing that it was feasible to monitor continuous physical activity in a healthy cohort in a free-living environment. Activity data were processed both at an individual level and as a group allowing further analysis and comparator with the surgical patient cohort. The WAM was used to measure objective physical activity data for a cohort of patients undergoing colorectal surgery. Activity was assessed pre-operatively at home, post-operatively on the in-patient ward and then on discharge home back into the community. The physical activity data gave insight into patientsâ baseline function and their progression and recovery following their surgical procedure, with more detailed analysis showing the WAMâs ability to reflect the daily activities on the ward. There were statistically significant correlations between peri-operative physical activity and post-operative outcomes.
The results from the use of WAMs within this thesis provide an opportunity for refining the ERAS concept through continuous, objective physical activity monitoring as well as the potential to enhance patient/clinician communication, leading to more personalised care and an improvement in post-operative outcomes.Open Acces
All in the Family: Exploring Design Personas of Systems for Remote Communication with Preschoolers
Although there have been recent advances in remote communication technologies that foster
connectedness and intimacy over a distance, systems designed for communicating with preliterate
preschoolersâa desired use caseâare not yet prevalent, nor are there clear guidelines for their design.
We conducted a mixed-methods study to characterize the current practices, goals, and needs of
people who wish to use remote communication systems with young children. We present quantitative
and qualitative findings on the motivations for communicating, the habits, activities, and patterns that
have been established, and the barriers and concerns faced. We synthesized these findings into four
design personas that describe the desired functionality and requirements of systems to support
remote communication with preschoolers. For each persona, we systematically evaluated 60
research-based systems based on the extent to which each personaâs requirements were covered,
demonstrating that none of the personas were greatly satisfied with the available tools

Modelling of Human Control and Performance Evaluation using Artificial Neural Network and Brainwave
Conventionally, a human has to learn to operate a machine by himself / herself. Human Adaptive
Mechatronics (HAM) aims to investigate a machine that has the capability to learn its operator
skills in order to provide assistance and guidance appropriately. Therefore, the understanding of
human behaviour during the human-machine interaction (HMI) from the machineâs side is
essential. The focus of this research is to propose a model of human-machine control strategy
and performance evaluation from the machineâs point of view. Various HAM simulation
scenarios are developed for the investigations of the HMI.
The first case study that utilises the classic pendulum-driven capsule system reveals that a
human can learn to control the unfamiliar system and summarise the control strategy as a set of
rules. Further investigation of the case study is conducted with nine participants to explore the
performance differences and control characteristics among them. High performers tend to
control the pendulum at high frequency in the right portion of the angle range while the low
performers perform inconsistent control behaviour. This control information is used to develop
a human-machine control model by adopting an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and 10-time-
10-fold cross-validation. Two models of capsule direction and position predictions are obtained
with 88.3% and 79.1% accuracies, respectively.
An Electroencephalogram (EEG) headset is integrated into the platform for monitoring brain
activity during HMI. A number of preliminary studies reveal that the brain has a specific
response pattern to particular stimuli compared to normal brainwaves. A novel human-machine
performance evaluation based on the EEG brainwaves is developed by utilising a classical target
hitting task as a case study of HMI. Six models are obtained for the evaluation of the
corresponding performance aspects including the Fitts index of performance. The averaged
evaluation accuracy of the models is 72.35%. However, the accuracy drops to 65.81% when the
models are applied to unseen data. In general, it can be claimed that the accuracy is satisfactory
since it is very challenging to evaluate the HMI performance based only on the EEG brainwave
activity
