Assessment of the Impact of Smart City Initiatives on the Development of Urbanized Territories

Digitalization processes are penetrating deeper into various areas of urbanized territories, being a factor affecting the quality of life of the local population. One of the promising approaches for the development of urban areas in the context of digitalization is the concept of the smart city. Despite the significant popularity of the smart city concept among the scientific community, as well as municipal authorities, the impact of digitalization processes on the development of the urban environment, as well as the possibility of using digital technologies to solve emerging problems in the economic, social, and environmental spheres, has been studied very little. The aim of the study is to determine the dependencies between the implementation of smart city model initiatives and the development of individual subsystems of the urban environment. The paper shows that a significant part of modern research is of theoretical, descriptive nature, while there is a shortage of empirical research, the main purpose of which would be to identify quantitative patterns in the development of smart cities, which would contribute to the development of economic and mathematical approaches to the study of urbanized territories in the conditions of formation digital society. The research method used by the authors is correlation analysis. Using the cases of 118 cities from the Smart City Index 2021, prepared by the Singapore Institute of Technology and Design, the relationship between the implementation of ideas for the digitalization of the urban environment and improving the quality of individual components of the urban environment is shown. As a result of the study, strong correlations were identified between the introduction of digital technologies in the main areas of the urban economy and the development of the urban environment, the hypothesis about the impact of digitalization processes on the development of certain areas of management within urban areas was confirmed, relationships between the development of smart solutions within the urban environment and changes in quality were shown. life of the local population. Одним из перспективных подходов развития городских территорий в условиях цифровизации является концепция умного города. Несмотря на значительную популярность концепции умного города среди научного сообщества, муниципальных властей, влияние процессов цифровизации на развитие городской среды, а также возможность использования цифровых технологий для решения возникающих проблем в экономической, социальной, экологической сферах изучено крайне незначительно. Целью исследования является определение зависимостей между реализацией инициатив модели умного города и развитием отдельных подсистем городской среды. В работе показано, что значительная часть современных исследований носит теоретический, описательный характер, при этом ощущается дефицит эмпирических исследований, основной целью которых являлось бы выявление количественных закономерностей процессов развития умных городов, что способствовало бы развитию экономико-математических подходов к изучению урбанизированных территорий в условиях формирования цифрового общества. Метод исследования – корреляционный анализ. На примере 118 городов из индекса умных городов (Smart City Index 2021, подготовленного сингапурским Институтом технологий и дизайна) показаны зависимости между реализацией идей по цифровизации городской среды и повышением качества отдельных компонент городской среды. В результате исследования выявлены сильные корреляционные зависимости между внедрением цифровых технологий в основные сферы городского хозяйства и развитием городской среды, подтверждена гипотеза о влиянии процессов цифровизации на развитие отдельных направлений хозяйствования в рамках урбанизированных территорий, показаны зависимости между развитием умных решений в рамках городской среды и изменением качества жизни местного населения. Conversational artificial intelligence in the AEC industry: A review of present status, challenges and opportunities

The idea of developing a system that can converse and understand human languages has been around since the 1200 s. With the advancement in artificial intelligence (AI), Conversational AI came of age in 2010 with the launch of Apple’s Siri. Conversational AI systems leveraged Natural Language Processing (NLP) to understand and converse with humans via speech and text. These systems have been deployed in sectors such as aviation, tourism, and healthcare. However, the application of Conversational AI in the architecture engineering and construction (AEC) industry is lagging, and little is known about the state of research on Conversational AI. Thus, this study presents a systematic review of Conversational AI in the AEC industry to provide insights into the current development and conducted a Focus Group Discussion to highlight challenges and validate areas of opportunities. The findings reveal that Conversational AI applications hold immense benefits for the AEC industry, but it is currently underexplored. The major challenges for the under exploration were highlighted and discusses for intervention. Lastly, opportunities and future research directions of Conversational AI are projected and validated which would improve the productivity and efficiency of the industry. This study presents the status quo of a fast-emerging research area and serves as the first attempt in the AEC field. Its findings would provide insights into the new field which be of benefit to researchers and stakeholders in the AEC industry
