    Connectivity has become one of the critical success factors in generating and sustaining high-performing National Innovation Systems. Industry Science Links (ISLs) are an important dimension of this connectivity. Over the last decades, multiple insights have been gained (both from theory and practice) as to how 'effective' ISLs can be fostered through the design and the development of university-based technology transfer units. In this paper, we document and analyze the evolution of 'effective' university-based technology transfer mechanisms, towards a matrix structure allowing an active involvement of the research groups in commercial exploitation of their research findings, while specialized supporting services like intellectual property management and business plan development are centralized. We show that the establishment of:(1) an appropriate context within academia;(2) the design of stimulating incentive structures for academic research groups and,(3) the implementation of appropriate decision and monitoring processes within the interface unit itself, are critical elements in fostering 'effective' linkages between industry and the academic science base.Decision; Factors; Industry; Management; Matrix; Processes;

    Universities play a critical role in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through their mandate of teaching, education, research, and community engagements. Through their support of the mother body, university libraries provide access to information towards the achievement of SDGs. One way of achieving the SDGs is through citizen science. Citizen science is the involvement of community members in scientific research. The success of citizen science projects toward achieving SDGs has been vastly reported in the literature. Data produced from citizen science projects can be used towards achieving SDGs. This is where academic librarians can play a critical role in ensuring that the right information is provided to the right people and is fit for purpose. Academic librarians, as knowledge hubs, have the knowledge and expertise to support SDGs. The study aims to propose a framework that university libraries can adopt to embed citizen science in their service offerings to assist in achieving SDGs. This study employed an explanatory sequential mixed-method research design to source views from academic librarians in university libraries in South Africa. The findings of the study revealed that academic librarians are willing to support and promote citizen science activities. However, there are potential pitfalls that may hamper their intentions. The study developed a proposed framework that academic librarians can adopt and embed citizen science activities

    This paper deals with the development of mathematical structures suitable to include a variety of Boltzmann type models for social competition. The first part is devoted to derive the framework suitable to design general models. The second part deals with some applications and simulations in the field of social dynamics, and specifically about-the free choice of each individual about one among several families which partition the whole population. Finally, a critical analysis towards research perspectives is proposed. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved

    Entrepreneurial Process Studies Using Insider Action Research: Opportunities & Challenges for Entrepreneurship Scholarship

    Get PDF
    This paper examines the opportunities and challenges of adopting Insider Action Research (IAR) in entrepreneurial process studies. It employs a critical reflexive and narrative approach in examining our own lived experience in a real-time digital entrepreneurial journey spanning three years while triangulating it with experiential knowledge in another role as dissertation supervisors. Our live case illustrates that IAR, when it combines reflective practice, cooperative inquiry and design science, represents a suitable but under-exploited methodology for entrepreneurship scholarship. We build on this knowledge to offer a model for incorporating this methodology in entrepreneurship research and education. Consequently, we contribute towards responding to the need for phenomenon-methodology fit in the discipline. Ultimately, the paper’s value lies in its effort towards resolving the seemingly perennial question regarding the legitimacy of entrepreneurship as a distinctive domain of scholarship

    Foundations of Cryptoeconomic Systems

    Blockchain networks and similar cryptoeconomic networks aresystems, specifically complex systems. They are adaptive networkswith multi-scale spatiotemporal dynamics. Individual actions towards a collective goal are incentivized with "purpose-driven" tokens. These tokens are equipped with cryptoeconomic mechanisms allowing a decentralized network to simultaneously maintain a universal state layer, support peer-to-peer settlement, andincentivize collective action. These networks therefore provide a mission-critical and safety-critical regulatory infrastructure for autonomous agents in untrusted economic networks. They also provide a rich, real-time data set reflecting all economic activities in their systems. Advances in data science and network sciencecan thus be leveraged to design and analyze these economic systems in a manner consistent with the best practices of modern systems engineering. Research that reflects all aspects of these socioeconomic networks needs (i) a complex systems approach, (ii) interdisciplinary research, and (iii) a combination of economic and engineering methods, here referred to as "economic systems engineering", for the regulation and control of these socio-economicsystems. This manuscript provides foundations for further research activities that build on these assumptions, including specific research questions and methodologies for future research in this field.Series: Working Paper Series / Institute for Cryptoeconomics / Interdisciplinary Researc
