    Design of a Reference Architecture for Production Scheduling Applications based on a Problem Representation including Practical Constraints

    Changing customer demands increase the complexity and importance of production scheduling, requiring better scheduling algorithms, e.g., machine learning algorithms. At the same time, current research often neglects practical constraints, e.g., changeovers or transportation. To address this issue, we derive a representation of the scheduling problem and develop a reference architecture for future scheduling applications to increase the impact of future research. To achieve this goal, we apply a design science research approach and, first, rigorously identify the problem and derive requirements for a scheduling application based on a structured literature review. Then, we develop the problem representation and reference architecture as design science artifacts. Finally, we demonstrate the artifacts in an application scenario and publish the resulting prototypical scheduling application, enabling machine learning-based scheduling algorithms, for usage in future development projects. Our results guide future research into including practical constraints and provide practitioners with a framework for developing scheduling applications

    A deep reinforcement learning based scheduling policy for reconfigurable manufacturing systems

    Reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMS) is one of the trending paradigms toward a digitalised factory. With its rapid reconfiguring capability, finding a far-sighted scheduling policy is challenging. Reinforcement learning is well-equipped for finding highly efficient production plans that would bring near-optimal future rewards. For minimising reconfiguring actions, this paper uses a deep reinforcement learning agent to make autonomous decision with a built-in discrete event simulation model of a generic RMS. Aiming at the completion of the assigned order lists while minimising the reconfiguration actions, the agent outperforms the conventional first-in-first-out dispatching rule after self-learning

    Toward Robust Manufacturing Scheduling: Stochastic Job-Shop Scheduling

    Manufacturing plays a significant role in promoting economic development, production, exports, and job creation, which ultimately contribute to improving the quality of life. The presence of manufacturing defects is, however, inevitable leading to products being discarded, i.e. scrapped. In some cases, defective products can be repaired through rework. Scrap and rework cause a longer completion time, which can contribute to the order being shipped late. In addition, complex manufacturing scheduling becomes much more challenging when the above uncertainties are present. Motivated by the presence of uncertainties as well as combinatorial complexity, this paper addresses the challenge illustrated through a case study of stochastic job-shop scheduling problems arising within low-volume high-variety manufacturing. To ensure on-time delivery, high-quality solutions are required, and near-optimal solutions must be obtained within strict time constraints to ensure smooth operations on the job-shop floor. To efficiently solve the stochastic job-shop scheduling (JSS) problem, a recently-developed Surrogate "Level-Based" Lagrangian Relaxation is used to reduce computational effort while efficiently exploiting the geometric convergence potential inherent to Polyak's step-sizing formula thereby leading to fast convergence. Numerical testing demonstrates that the new method is more than two orders of magnitude faster as compared to commercial solvers

    Application of lean scheduling and production control in non-repetitive manufacturing systems using intelligent agent decision support

    This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.Lean Manufacturing (LM) is widely accepted as a world-class manufacturing paradigm, its currency and superiority are manifested in numerous recent success stories. Most lean tools including Just-in-Time (JIT) were designed for repetitive serial production systems. This resulted in a substantial stream of research which dismissed a priori the suitability of LM for non-repetitive non-serial job-shops. The extension of LM into non-repetitive production systems is opposed on the basis of the sheer complexity of applying JIT pull production control in non-repetitive systems fabricating a high variety of products. However, the application of LM in job-shops is not unexplored. Studies proposing the extension of leanness into non-repetitive production systems have promoted the modification of pull control mechanisms or reconfiguration of job-shops into cellular manufacturing systems. This thesis sought to address the shortcomings of the aforementioned approaches. The contribution of this thesis to knowledge in the field of production and operations management is threefold: Firstly, a Multi-Agent System (MAS) is designed to directly apply pull production control to a good approximation of a real-life job-shop. The scale and complexity of the developed MAS prove that the application of pull production control in non-repetitive manufacturing systems is challenging, perplex and laborious. Secondly, the thesis examines three pull production control mechanisms namely, Kanban, Base Stock and Constant Work-in-Process (CONWIP) which it enhances so as to prevent system deadlocks, an issue largely unaddressed in the relevant literature. Having successfully tested the transferability of pull production control to non-repetitive manufacturing, the third contribution of this thesis is that it uses experimental and empirical data to examine the impact of pull production control on job-shop performance. The thesis identifies issues resulting from the application of pull control in job-shops which have implications for industry practice and concludes by outlining further research that can be undertaken in this direction

    A Representation for Serial Robotic Tasks

    The representation for serial robotic tasks proposed in this thesis is a language of temporal constraints derived directly from a model of the space of serial plans. It was specifically designed to encompass problems that include disjunctive ordering constraints. This guarantees that the proposed language can completely and, to a certain extent, compactly represent all possible serial robotic tasks. The generality of this language carries a penalty. The proposed language of temporal constraints is NP-Complete. Specific methods have been demonstrated for normalizing constraints posed in this language in order to make subsequent sequencing and analysis more tractable. Using this language, the planner can specify necessary and alternative orderings to control undesirable interactions between steps of a plan. For purposes of analysis, the planner can factor a plan into strategies, and decompose those strategies into essential components. Using properly normalized constraint expressions the sequencer can derive admissible sequences and admissible next operations. Using these facilities, a robot can be given the specification of a task and it can adapt its sequence of operations according to run-time events and the constraints on the operations to be performed

    A paradigm shift is taking place in logistics. The focus is changing from operational effectiveness to adaptation. Supply Chains will develop into networks that will adapt to consumer demand in almost real time. Time to market, capacity of adaptation and enrichment of customer experience seem to be the key elements of this new paradigm. In this environment emerging technologies like RFID (Radio Frequency ID), Intelligent Products and the Internet, are triggering a reconsideration of methods, procedures and goals. We present a Multiagent System framework specialized in retail that addresses these changes with the use of rational agents and takes advantages of the new market opportunities. Like in an old bazaar, agents able to learn, cooperate, take advantage of gossip and distinguish between collaborators and competitors, have the ability to adapt, learn and react to a changing environment better than any other structure.     Intelligent Simulation Modeling of a Flexible Manufacturing System with Automated Guided Vehicles

    Although simulation is a very flexible and cost effective problem solving technique, it has been traditionally limited to building models which are merely descriptive of the system under study. Relatively new approaches combine improvement heuristics and artificial intelligence with simulation to provide prescriptive power in simulation modeling. This study demonstrates the synergy obtained by bringing together the "learning automata theory" and simulation analysis. Intelligent objects are embedded in the simulation model of a Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS), in which Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) serve as the material handling system between four unique workcenters. The objective of the study is to find satisfactory AGV routing patterns along available paths to minimize the mean time spent by different kinds of parts in the system. System parameters such as different part routing and processing time requirements, arrivals distribution, number of palettes, available paths between workcenters, number and speed of AGVs can be defined by the user. The network of learning automata acts as the decision maker driving the simulation, and the FMS model acts as the training environment for the automata network; providing realistic, yet cost-effective and risk-free feedback. Object oriented design and implementation of the simulation model with a process oriented world view, graphical animation and visually interactive simulation (using GUI objects such as windows, menus, dialog boxes; mouse sensitive dynamic automaton trace charts and dynamic graphical statistical monitoring) are other issues dealt with in the study
