Optimal Virtualized Inter-Tenant Resource Sharing for Device-to-Device Communications in 5G Networks
Device-to-Device (D2D) communication is expected to enable a number of new
services and applications in future mobile networks and has attracted
significant research interest over the last few years. Remarkably, little
attention has been placed on the issue of D2D communication for users belonging
to different operators. In this paper, we focus on this aspect for D2D users
that belong to different tenants (virtual network operators), assuming
virtualized and programmable future 5G wireless networks. Under the assumption
of a cross-tenant orchestrator, we show that significant gains can be achieved
in terms of network performance by optimizing resource sharing from the
different tenants, i.e., slices of the substrate physical network topology. To
this end, a sum-rate optimization framework is proposed for optimal sharing of
the virtualized resources. Via a wide site of numerical investigations, we
prove the efficacy of the proposed solution and the achievable gains compared

Enabling decentralized wireless index coding in practice
Index coding is a problem in theoretical computer science and network information theory that studies the optimal coding scheme for transmitting multiple messages across a network to receivers with different side information. The ultimate goal of index coding is to reduce transmission time in a communication network by minimizing the number of messages based on shared information. Index coding theory extends to several key engineering problems in network communication including peer to peer communication, distributed broadcast networks, and interference alignment. Although the theoretical connection between index coding and wireless networks is valuable, we focus on finding index coding strategies for a realistic wireless network. More specifically, we investigate how index coding can be applied to an OFDMA downlink network during the retransmission phase. An orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) downlink network is a network where data is sent downward from a designated higher-level transmitter to a group of receiving nodes. In addition, receivers can often decode the other receivers' physical layer signals on the other sub-channels that can be exploited as side information. If this side information is sent back to the transmitter, it can then be coded to cancel the interference in subsequent retransmission phases resulting in fewer retransmission messages. In this report, we explain the coding model and characterize the benefits of index coding for retransmissions within an OFDMA downlink network. In addition, we demonstrate the results of applying this index coding scheme in such network in both simulation and in an active wireless mesh network.Electrical and Computer Engineerin
Wireless communication, identification and sensing technologies enabling integrated logistics: a study in the harbor environment
In the last decade, integrated logistics has become an important challenge in
the development of wireless communication, identification and sensing
technology, due to the growing complexity of logistics processes and the
increasing demand for adapting systems to new requirements. The advancement of
wireless technology provides a wide range of options for the maritime container
terminals. Electronic devices employed in container terminals reduce the manual
effort, facilitating timely information flow and enhancing control and quality
of service and decision made. In this paper, we examine the technology that can
be used to support integration in harbor's logistics. In the literature, most
systems have been developed to address specific needs of particular harbors,
but a systematic study is missing. The purpose is to provide an overview to the
reader about which technology of integrated logistics can be implemented and
what remains to be addressed in the future
Engine performance characteristics and evaluation of variation in the length of intake plenum
In the engine with multipoint fuel injection system using electronically controlled fuel injectors has an intake manifold in which only the air flows and, the fuel is injected into the intake valve. Since the intake manifolds transport mainly air, the supercharging effects of the variable length intake plenum will be different from carbureted engine. Engine tests have been carried out with the aim of constituting a base study to design a new variable length intake manifold plenum. The objective in this research is to study the engine performance characteristics and to evaluate the effects of the variation in the length of intake plenum. The engine test bed used for experimental work consists of a control panel, a hydraulic dynamometer and measurement instruments to measure the parameters of engine performance characteristics. The control panel is being used to perform administrative and management operating system. Besides that, the hydraulic dynamometer was used to measure the power of an engine by using a cell filled with liquid to increase its load. Thus, measurement instrument is provided in this test to measure the as brake torque, brake power, thermal efficiency and specific fuel consumption. The results showed that the variation in the plenum length causes an improvement on the engine performance characteristics especially on the fuel consumption at high load and low engine speeds which are put forward the system using for urban roads. From this experiment, it will show the behavior of engine performance
Optimality of Treating Interference as Noise: A Combinatorial Perspective
For single-antenna Gaussian interference channels, we re-formulate the
problem of determining the Generalized Degrees of Freedom (GDoF) region
achievable by treating interference as Gaussian noise (TIN) derived in [3] from
a combinatorial perspective. We show that the TIN power control problem can be
cast into an assignment problem, such that the globally optimal power
allocation variables can be obtained by well-known polynomial time algorithms.
Furthermore, the expression of the TIN-Achievable GDoF region (TINA region) can
be substantially simplified with the aid of maximum weighted matchings. We also
provide conditions under which the TINA region is a convex polytope that relax
those in [3]. For these new conditions, together with a channel connectivity
(i.e., interference topology) condition, we show TIN optimality for a new class
of interference networks that is not included, nor includes, the class found in
[3].
Building on the above insights, we consider the problem of joint link
scheduling and power control in wireless networks, which has been widely
studied as a basic physical layer mechanism for device-to-device (D2D)
communications. Inspired by the relaxed TIN channel strength condition as well
as the assignment-based power allocation, we propose a low-complexity
GDoF-based distributed link scheduling and power control mechanism (ITLinQ+)
that improves upon the ITLinQ scheme proposed in [4] and further improves over
the heuristic approach known as FlashLinQ. It is demonstrated by simulation
that ITLinQ+ provides significant average network throughput gains over both
ITLinQ and FlashLinQ, and yet still maintains the same level of implementation
complexity. More notably, the energy efficiency of the newly proposed ITLinQ+
is substantially larger than that of ITLinQ and FlashLinQ, which is desirable
