BeSpaceD: Towards a Tool Framework and Methodology for the Specification and Verification of Spatial Behavior of Distributed Software Component Systems
In this report, we present work towards a framework for modeling and checking
behavior of spatially distributed component systems. Design goals of our
framework are the ability to model spatial behavior in a component oriented,
simple and intuitive way, the possibility to automatically analyse and verify
systems and integration possibilities with other modeling and verification
tools. We present examples and the verification steps necessary to prove
properties such as range coverage or the absence of collisions between
components and technical details
Remote Data Retrieval for Bioinformatics Applications: An Agent Migration Approach
Some of the approaches have been developed to retrieve data automatically from one or multiple remote biological data sources. However, most of them require researchers to remain online and wait for returned results. The latter not only requires highly available network connection, but also may cause the network overload. Moreover, so far none of the existing approaches has been designed to address the following problems when retrieving the remote data in a mobile network environment: (1) the resources of mobile devices are limited; (2) network connection is relatively of low quality; and (3) mobile users are not always online. To address the aforementioned problems, we integrate an agent migration approach with a multi-agent system to overcome the high latency or limited bandwidth problem by moving their computations to the required resources or services. More importantly, the approach is fit for the mobile computing environments. Presented in this paper are also the system architecture, the migration strategy, as well as the security authentication of agent migration. As a demonstration, the remote data retrieval from GenBank was used to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed approach

V-ROOM: a virtual meeting system with intelligent structured summarisation
With the growth of virtual organisations and multinational companies, virtual collaboration tasks are becoming more important for employees. This paper describes the development of a virtual meeting system, called V-ROOM. An exploration of facilities required in such a system has been conducted. The findings highlighted that intelligent systems are needed, especially since information that individuals have to know and process, is vast. The survey results showed that meeting summarisation is one of the most important new features that should be added to virtual meeting systems for enterprises. This paper highlights the innovative methods employed in V-ROOM to produce relevant meeting summaries. V- ROOM's approach is compared to other methods from the literature and it is shown how the use of meta-data provided by parts of the V-ROOM system can improve the quality of summaries produced
The application of intelligent agents in libraries: a survey
Purpose - The purpose of this article is to provide a comprehensive literature review on the utilisation of intelligent agent technology in the library environment.
Design/methodology/approach - Research papers since 1990 on the use of various intelligent agent technologies in libraries are divided into two main application areas: digital library (DL), including agent-based DL projects, multi-agent architecture for DLs, intelligent agents for distributed heterogeneous information retrieval and agent support to information search process in DLs; and services in traditional libraries, including user interface for library information systems, automatic reference services and multi-agent architecture for library services. For each paper on the topic, its new ideas or models, referred work, analyses, experiments, findings and conclusions are addressed.
Findings - The majority of the literature covers DLs and there have been fewer studies about services in traditional libraries. A variety of architecture, framework and models integrating agent technology in library systems or services are proposed, but only a few have been implemented in the practical environment. The application of agent technology is still at the research and experimentation stage. Agent technology has great potential in many areas in the library context; however it presents challenges to libraries that want to be involved in its adoption.
Practical implications - The survey has practical implications for libraries, librarians and computer professionals in developing projects that employ intelligent agent technology to meet end-users\u27 expectations as well as to improve information services within limited resources in library settings.
Originality/value - The paper provides a comprehensive survey on the development and research of intelligent agents in libraries in literature
Example Based Caricature Synthesis
The likeness of a caricature to the original face image is an essential and often overlooked part of caricature
production. In this paper we present an example based caricature synthesis technique, consisting of shape
exaggeration, relationship exaggeration, and optimization for likeness. Rather than relying on a large training set
of caricature face pairs, our shape exaggeration step is based on only one or a small number of examples of facial
features. The relationship exaggeration step introduces two definitions which facilitate global facial feature
synthesis. The first is the T-Shape rule, which describes the relative relationship between the facial elements in an
intuitive manner. The second is the so called proportions, which characterizes the facial features in a proportion
form. Finally we introduce a similarity metric as the likeness metric based on the Modified Hausdorff Distance
(MHD) which allows us to optimize the configuration of facial elements, maximizing likeness while satisfying a
number of constraints. The effectiveness of our algorithm is demonstrated with experimental results
