    Comparison of Induction and PM Synchronous motor drives for EV application including design examples

    Three different motor drives for electric traction are compared, in terms of output power and efficiency at the same stack dimensions and inverter size. Induction motor (IM), surface-mounted permanent-magnet (PM) (SPM), and interior PM (IPM) synchronous motor drives are investigated, with reference to a common vehicle specification. The IM is penalized by the cage loss, but it is less expensive and inherently safe in case of inverter unwilled turnoff due to natural de-excitation. The SPM motor has a simple construction and shorter end connections, but it is penalized by eddy-current loss at high speed, has a very limited transient overload power, and has a high uncontrolled generator voltage. The IPM motor shows the better performance compromise, but it might be more complicated to be manufactured. Analytical relationships are first introduced and then validated on three example designs and finite element calculated, accounting for core saturation, harmonic losses, the effects of skewing, and operating temperature. The merits and limitations of the three solutions are quantified comprehensively and summarized by the calculation of the energy consumption over the standard New European Driving Cycl

    For Better and Worse: The Differing Income Tax Treatments of Marriage at Different Income Levels

    Although both marriage penalties and marriage bonuses exist at all income levels under the federal income tax, the system is tilted toward penalties for lower-income couples, toward bonuses for middle-income couples, and back toward penalties for upper income couples. This Article begins by explaining how the tax rules produce these differing treatments of marriage at different points in the income distribution. It then argues that the increase in recent decades in the social acceptability and prevalence of cohabitation makes tax marriage effects a more serious concern--in terms of both behavioral, effects and fairness-than in earlier decades. After demonstrating that Congress has never offered any justification for the differing tax treatments of marriage at different income levels, and that no plausible defense exists for the current distribution of penalties and bonuses, the Article offers several policy recommendations. The most basic and most important recommendation is simply that, whatever Congress does in this area, it should make conscious decisions about the appropriate distributions of penalties and bonuses at various income levels, instead of following its current practice of stumbling into a set of poorly understood and almost-impossible-to-defend effects

    Self-assembly and DNA binding of the blocking factor in X chromosome inactivation

    X chromosome inactivation (XCI) is the phenomenon occurring in female mammals whereby dosage compensation of X-linked genes is obtained by transcriptional silencing of one of their two X chromosomes, randomly chosen during early embryo development. The earliest steps of random X-inactivation, involving counting of the X chromosomes and choice of the active and inactive X, are still not understood. To explain "counting and choice," the longstanding hypothesis is that a molecular complex, a "blocking factor" (BF), exists. The BF is present in a single copy and can randomly bind to just one X per cell which is protected from inactivation, as the second X is inactivated by default. In such a picture, the missing crucial step is to explain how the molecular complex is self-assembled, why only one is formed, and how it binds only one X. We answer these questions within the framework of a schematic Statistical Physics model, investigated by Monte Carlo computer simulations. We show that a single complex is assembled as a result of a thermodynamic process relying on a phase transition occurring in the system which spontaneously breaks the symmetry between the X’s. We discuss, then, the BF interaction with X chromosomes. The thermodynamics of the mechanism that directs the two chromosomes to opposite fates could be, thus, clarified. The insights on the selfassembling and X binding properties of the BF are used to derive a quantitative scenario of biological implications describing current experimental evidences on "counting and choice.

    Access to vectors in multi-module memories

    The poor bandwidth obtained from memory when conflicts arise in the modules or in the interconnection network degrades the performance of computers. Address transformation schemes, such as interleaving, skewing and linear transformations, have been proposed to achieve conflict-free access for streams with constant stride. However, this is achieved only for some strides. In this paper, we summarize a mechanism to request the elements in an out-of-order way which allows to achieve conflict-free access for a larger number of strides. We study the cases of a single vector processor and of a vector multiprocessor system. For this latter case, we propose a synchronous mode of accessing memory that can be applied in SIMD machines or in MIMD systems with decoupled access and execution.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Conflict-free strides for vectors in matched memories

    Address transformation schemes, such as skewing and linear transformations, have been proposed to achieve conflict-free access to one family of strides in vector processors with matched memories. The paper extends these schemes to achieve this conflict-free access for several families. The basic idea is to perform an out-of-order access to vectors of fixed length, equal to that of the vector registers of the processor.
