Auditory Spectrum-Based Pitched Instrument Onset Detection
In this paper, a method for onset detection of music signals using auditory spectra is proposed. The auditory spectrogram provides a time-frequency representation that employs a sound processing model resembling the human auditory system. Recent work on onset detection employs DFT-based features describing spectral energy and phase differences, as well as pitch-based features. These features are often combined for maximizing detection performance. Here, the spectral flux and phase slope features are derived in the auditory framework and a novel fundamental frequency estimation algorithm based on auditory spectra is introduced. An onset detection algorithm is proposed, which processes and combines the aforementioned features at the decision level. Experiments are conducted on a dataset covering 11 pitched instrument types, consisting of 1829 onsets in total. Results indicate that auditory representations outperform various state-of-the-art approaches, with the onset detection algorithm reaching an F-measure of 82.6%
Multipath Parameter Estimation from OFDM Signals in Mobile Channels
We study multipath parameter estimation from orthogonal frequency division
multiplex signals transmitted over doubly dispersive mobile radio channels. We
are interested in cases where the transmission is long enough to suffer time
selectivity, but short enough such that the time variation can be accurately
modeled as depending only on per-tap linear phase variations due to Doppler
effects. We therefore concentrate on the estimation of the complex gain, delay
and Doppler offset of each tap of the multipath channel impulse response. We
show that the frequency domain channel coefficients for an entire packet can be
expressed as the superimposition of two-dimensional complex sinusoids. The
maximum likelihood estimate requires solution of a multidimensional non-linear
least squares problem, which is computationally infeasible in practice. We
therefore propose a low complexity suboptimal solution based on iterative
successive and parallel cancellation. First, initial delay/Doppler estimates
are obtained via successive cancellation. These estimates are then refined
using an iterative parallel cancellation procedure. We demonstrate via Monte
Carlo simulations that the root mean squared error statistics of our estimator
are very close to the Cramer-Rao lower bound of a single two-dimensional

GPS Multipath Detection in the Frequency Domain
Multipath is among the major sources of errors in precise positioning using
GPS and continues to be extensively studied. Two Fast Fourier Transform
(FFT)-based detectors are presented in this paper as GPS multipath detection
techniques. The detectors are formulated as binary hypothesis tests under the
assumption that the multipath exists for a sufficient time frame that allows
its detection based on the quadrature arm of the coherent Early-minus-Late
discriminator (Q EmL) for a scalar tracking loop (STL) or on the quadrature (Q
EmL) and/or in-phase arm (I EmL) for a vector tracking loop (VTL), using an
observation window of N samples. Performance analysis of the suggested
detectors is done on multipath signal data acquired from the multipath
environment simulator developed by the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) as well as
on multipath data from real GPS signals. Application of the detection tests to
correlator outputs of scalar and vector tracking loops shows that they may be
used to exclude multipath contaminated satellites from the navigation solution.
These detection techniques can be extended to other Global Navigation Satellite

An Extended Virtual Aperture Imaging Model for Through-the-wall Sensing and Its Environmental Parameters Estimation
Through-the-wall imaging (TWI) radar has been given increasing attention in recent years. However, prior knowledge about environmental parameters, such as wall thickness and dielectric constant, and the standoff distance between an array and a wall, is generally unavailable in real applications. Thus, targets behind the wall suffer from defocusing and displacement under the conventional imag¬ing operations. To solve this problem, in this paper, we first set up an extended imaging model of a virtual aperture obtained by a multiple-input-multiple-output array, which considers the array position to the wall and thus is more applicable for real situations. Then, we present a method to estimate the environmental parameters to calibrate the TWI, without multiple measurements or dominant scatter¬ers behind-the-wall to assist. Spatial Identification Methods and Systems for RFID Tags
DisertaÄŤnĂ práce je zaměřena na metody a systĂ©my pro měřenĂ vzdálenosti a lokalizaci RFID tagĹŻ pracujĂcĂch v pásmu UHF. Ăšvod je vÄ›nován popisu souÄŤasnĂ©ho stavu vÄ›deckĂ©ho poznánĂ v oblasti RFID prostorovĂ© identifikace a struÄŤnĂ©mu shrnutĂ problematiky modelovánĂ a návrhu prototypĹŻ tÄ›chto systĂ©mĹŻ. Po specifikaci cĂlĹŻ disertace pokraÄŤuje práce popisem teorie modelovánĂ degenerovanĂ©ho kanálu pro RFID komunikaci. DetailnÄ› jsou rozebrány metody měřenĂ vzdálenosti a odhadu smÄ›ru pĹ™Ăchodu signálu zaloĹľenĂ© na zpracovánĂ fázovĂ© informace. Pro účely lokalizace je navrĹľeno nÄ›kolik scĂ©nářů rozmĂstÄ›nĂ antĂ©n. Modely degenerovanĂ©ho kanálu jsou simulovány v systĂ©mu MATLAB. VĂ˝znamná část tĂ©to práce je vÄ›nována konceptu softwarovÄ› definovanĂ©ho rádia (SDR) a specifikĹŻm jeho adaptace na UHF RFID, která vyuĹľitĂ běžnĂ˝ch SDR systĂ©mĹŻ znaÄŤnÄ› omezujĂ. Oba navrĹľenĂ© scĂ©náře rozmĂstÄ›nĂ antĂ©n jsou v závÄ›ru ověřeny lokalizaÄŤnĂm měřenĂm v reálnĂ˝ch podmĂnkách.The doctoral thesis is focused on methods and systems for ranging and localization of RFID tags operating in the UHF band. It begins with a description of the state of the art in the field of RFID positioning with short extension to the area of modeling and prototyping of such systems. After a brief specification of dissertation objectives, the thesis overviews the theory of degenerate channel modeling for RFID communication. Details are given about phase-based ranging and direction of arrival finding methods. Several antenna placement scenarios are proposed for localization purposes. The degenerate channel models are simulated in MATLAB. A significant part of the thesis is devoted to software defined radio (SDR) concept and its adaptation for UHF RFID operation, as it has its specialties which make the usage of standard SDR test equipment very disputable. Transmit carrier leakage into receiver path and requirements on local oscillator signals for mixing are discussed. The development of three experimental prototypes is also presented there: experimental interrogator EXIN-1, measurement system based on Ettus USRP platform, and antenna switching matrix for an emulation of SIMO system. The final part is focused on testing and evaluation of described positioning techniques based on complex backscatter channel transfer function measurement. Both narrowband/wideband ranging and direction of arrival methods are validated. Finally, both proposed antenna placement scenarios are evaluated with real-world measurements.
A Generalized Framework on Beamformer Design and CSI Acquisition for Single-Carrier Massive MIMO Systems in Millimeter Wave Channels
In this paper, we establish a general framework on the reduced dimensional
channel state information (CSI) estimation and pre-beamformer design for
frequency-selective massive multiple-input multiple-output MIMO systems
employing single-carrier (SC) modulation in time division duplex (TDD) mode by
exploiting the joint angle-delay domain channel sparsity in millimeter (mm)
wave frequencies. First, based on a generic subspace projection taking the
joint angle-delay power profile and user-grouping into account, the reduced
rank minimum mean square error (RR-MMSE) instantaneous CSI estimator is derived
for spatially correlated wideband MIMO channels. Second, the statistical
pre-beamformer design is considered for frequency-selective SC massive MIMO
channels. We examine the dimension reduction problem and subspace (beamspace)
construction on which the RR-MMSE estimation can be realized as accurately as
possible. Finally, a spatio-temporal domain correlator type reduced rank
channel estimator, as an approximation of the RR-MMSE estimate, is obtained by
carrying out least square (LS) estimation in a proper reduced dimensional
beamspace. It is observed that the proposed techniques show remarkable
robustness to the pilot interference (or contamination) with a significant
reduction in pilot overhead
