    Population stability: regulating size in the presence of an adversary

    We introduce a new coordination problem in distributed computing that we call the population stability problem. A system of agents each with limited memory and communication, as well as the ability to replicate and self-destruct, is subjected to attacks by a worst-case adversary that can at a bounded rate (1) delete agents chosen arbitrarily and (2) insert additional agents with arbitrary initial state into the system. The goal is perpetually to maintain a population whose size is within a constant factor of the target size NN. The problem is inspired by the ability of complex biological systems composed of a multitude of memory-limited individual cells to maintain a stable population size in an adverse environment. Such biological mechanisms allow organisms to heal after trauma or to recover from excessive cell proliferation caused by inflammation, disease, or normal development. We present a population stability protocol in a communication model that is a synchronous variant of the population model of Angluin et al. In each round, pairs of agents selected at random meet and exchange messages, where at least a constant fraction of agents is matched in each round. Our protocol uses three-bit messages and ω(log2N)\omega(\log^2 N) states per agent. We emphasize that our protocol can handle an adversary that can both insert and delete agents, a setting in which existing approximate counting techniques do not seem to apply. The protocol relies on a novel coloring strategy in which the population size is encoded in the variance of the distribution of colors. Individual agents can locally obtain a weak estimate of the population size by sampling from the distribution, and make individual decisions that robustly maintain a stable global population size

    Stable Leader Election in Population Protocols Requires Linear Time

    A population protocol *stably elects a leader* if, for all nn, starting from an initial configuration with nn agents each in an identical state, with probability 1 it reaches a configuration y\mathbf{y} that is correct (exactly one agent is in a special leader state \ell) and stable (every configuration reachable from y\mathbf{y} also has a single agent in state \ell). We show that any population protocol that stably elects a leader requires Ω(n)\Omega(n) expected "parallel time" --- Ω(n2)\Omega(n^2) expected total pairwise interactions --- to reach such a stable configuration.     Efficient size estimation and impossibility of termination in uniform dense population protocols

    We study uniform population protocols: networks of anonymous agents whose pairwise interactions are chosen at random, where each agent uses an identical transition algorithm that does not depend on the population size nn. Many existing polylog(n)(n) time protocols for leader election and majority computation are nonuniform: to operate correctly, they require all agents to be initialized with an approximate estimate of nn (specifically, the exact value logn\lfloor \log n \rfloor). Our first main result is a uniform protocol for calculating log(n)±O(1)\log(n) \pm O(1) with high probability in O(log2n)O(\log^2 n) time and O(log4n)O(\log^4 n) states (O(loglogn)O(\log \log n) bits of memory). The protocol is converging but not terminating: it does not signal when the estimate is close to the true value of logn\log n. If it could be made terminating, this would allow composition with protocols, such as those for leader election or majority, that require a size estimate initially, to make them uniform (though with a small probability of failure). We do show how our main protocol can be indirectly composed with others in a simple and elegant way, based on the leaderless phase clock, demonstrating that those protocols can in fact be made uniform. However, our second main result implies that the protocol cannot be made terminating, a consequence of a much stronger result: a uniform protocol for any task requiring more than constant time cannot be terminating even with probability bounded above 0, if infinitely many initial configurations are dense: any state present initially occupies Ω(n)\Omega(n) agents. (In particular, no leader is allowed.) Crucially, the result holds no matter the memory or time permitted.     Time and Space Optimal Counting in Population Protocols

    International audienceThis work concerns the general issue of combined optimality in terms of time and space complexity. In this context, we study the problem of (exact) counting resource-limited and passively mobile nodes in the model of population protocols, in which the space complexity is crucial. The counted nodes are memory-limited anonymous devices (called agents) communicating asynchronously in pairs (according to a fairness condition). Moreover, we assume that these agents are prone to failures so that they cannot be correctly initialized.This study considers two classical fairness conditions, and for each we investigate the issue of time optimality of counting given the optimal space per agent. In the case of randomly interacting agents (probabilistic fairness), as usual, the convergence time is measured in terms of parallel time (or parallel interactions), which is defined as the number of pairwise interactions until convergence, divided by n (the number of agents). In case of weak fairness, where it is only required that every pair of agents interacts infinitely often, the convergence time is defined in terms of non-null transitions, i.e, the transitions that affect the states of the interacting agents.First, assuming probabilistic fairness, we present a " non-guessing " time optimal protocol of O(n log n) expected time given an optimal space of only one bit, and we prove the time optimality of this protocol. Then, for weak fairness, we show that a space optimal (semi-uniform) solution cannot converge faster than in Ω(2^n) time (non-null transitions). This result, together with the time complexity analysis of an already known space optimal protocol, shows that it is also optimal in time (given the optimal space constrains)
