    An analytical packet/flow-level modelling approach for wireless LANs with Quality-of-Service support

    We present an analytical packet/flow-level modelling approach for the performance analysis of IEEE 802.11e WLAN, where we explicitly take into account QoS differentiation mechanisms based on minimum contention window size values and Arbitration InterFrame Space (AIFS) values, as included in the Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) protocol of the 802.11e standard. We first enhance the packet-level approach previously used for best-effort WLANs to include traffic classes with different QoS requirements. The packet-level model approach yields service weights that discriminate among traffic classes. From these observations, the packet/flow-level model for 802.11e is the \textit{generalized} discriminatory processor-sharing (GDPS) queueing model where the state-dependent system capacity is distributed among active traffic classes according to state-dependent priority weights. Extensive simulations show that the discriminatory processor-sharing model closely represents the flow behavior of 802.11e

    A New Media Access Control Protocol For VANET: Priority R-ALOHA (PR-ALOHA)

    More practical applications of Media Access Control (MAC) protocols arise as the world turns increasingly wireless. Low delay, high throughput and reliable communication are essential requirements for standard performance in safety applications (e.g., lane changes warning, pre-crash warning and electronic brake lights). In particular, multi-priority protocols are important in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs), specifically in Inter-Vehicle Communication (IVC) where safety messages are given higher priority and transmitted faster than normal messages. The R-ALOHA protocol is considered one of the few promising protocols for VANETs because it is simple to implement and suitable for medium access control in Ad Hoc wireless networks. However, R-ALOHA lacks the property of prioritizing the different messages. In this dissertation, a new two-level priority MAC protocol called Priority R-ALOHA (PR-ALOHA) is presented to overcome the lack of priority problem in R-ALOHA. The two levels are low priority and high priority where priority is introduced by reserving specific time slots in the frame exclusively for high priority messages. This effectively increases the number of slots that a high priority message may compete for and thus decreases its delay. A two-dimensional Markov model coupled with Monte Carlo simulation is introduced to investigate the dynamic behavior of PR-ALOHA in steady and transient states. Modeling and simulation results of PR-ALOHA show that PR-ALOHA improves the performance of high priority traffic with limited effect on normal network traffic. Then, a dynamic slot allocation algorithm is introduced to PR-ALOH to optimize slot usage. Finally, a mobility model is introduced to emulate the behavior of the vehicles on the road where the performance of the PR-ALOHA with variable parameters, such as the length of the highway, the vehicle transmission range and the number of vehicles on the road have been investigated. Based on the findings of this dissertation, PR-ALOHA combined with dynamic slot allocation and mobility has a potential in applications like IVC where it can prevent car accidents through faster channel access and rapid transfer of warning messages to surrounding vehicles

    This research aimed to create new knowledge and pioneer a path in the area relating to future trends in the WSN, by resolving some of the issues at the MAC layer in Wireless Sensor Networks. This work introduced a Multi-channel Distributed Coordinated Function (MC-DCF) which takes advantage of multi-channel assignment. The backoff algorithm of the IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF) was modified to invoke channel switching, based on threshold criteria in order to improve the overall throughput for wireless sensor networks. This work commenced by surveying different protocols: contention-based MAC protocols, transport layer protocols, cross-layered design and multichannel multi-radio assignments. A number of existing protocols were analysed, each attempting to resolve one or more problems faced by the current layers. The 802.15.4 performed very poorly at high data rate and at long range. Therefore 802.15.4 is not suitable for sensor multimedia or surveillance system with streaming data for future multichannel multi-radio systems. A survey on 802.11 DCF - which was designed mainly for wireless networks –supports and confirm that it has a power saving mechanism which is used to synchronise nodes. However it uses a random back-off mechanism that cannot provide deterministic upper bounds on channel access delay and as such cannot support real-time traffic. The weaknesses identified by surveying this protocol form the backbone of this thesis The overall aim for this thesis was to introduce multichannel with single radio as a new paradigm for IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordinated Function (DCF) in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) that is used in a wide range of applications, from military application, environmental monitoring, medical care, smart buildings and other industry and to extend WSNs with multimedia capability which sense for instance sounds or motion, video sensor which capture video events of interest. Traditionally WSNs do not need high data rate and throughput, since events are normally captured periodically. With the paradigm shift in technology, multimedia streaming has become more demanding than data sensing applications as such the need for high data rate protocol for WSN which is an emerging technology in this area. The IEEE 802.11 can support data rates up to 54Mbps and 802.11 DCF was designed specifically for use in wireless networks. This thesis focused on designing an algorithm that applied multichannel to IEEE 802.11 DCF back-off algorithm to reduce the waiting time of a node and increase throughput when attempting to access the medium. Data collection in WSN tends to suffer from heavy congestion especially nodes nearer to the sink node. Therefore, this thesis proposes a contention based MAC protocol to address this problem from the inspiration of the 802.11 DCF backoff algorithm resulting from a comparison of IEEE 802.11 and IEEE 802.15.4 for Future Green Multichannel Multi-radio Wireless Sensor Networks

    Contention techniques for opportunistic communication in wireless mesh networks

    Auf dem Gebiet der drahtlosen Kommunikation und insbesondere auf den tieferen Netzwerkschichten sind gewaltige Fortschritte zu verzeichnen. Innovative Konzepte und Technologien auf der physikalischen Schicht (PHY) gehen dabei zeitnah in zelluläre Netze ein. Drahtlose Maschennetzwerke (WMNs) können mit diesem Innovationstempo nicht mithalten. Die Mehrnutzer-Kommunikation ist ein Grundpfeiler vieler angewandter PHY Technologien, die sich in WMNs nur ungenügend auf die etablierte Schichtenarchitektur abbilden lässt. Insbesondere ist das Problem des Scheduling in WMNs inhärent komplex. Erstaunlicherweise ist der Mehrfachzugriff mit Trägerprüfung (CSMA) in WMNs asymptotisch optimal obwohl das Verfahren eine geringe Durchführungskomplexität aufweist. Daher stellt sich die Frage, in welcher Weise das dem CSMA zugrunde liegende Konzept des konkurrierenden Wettbewerbs (engl. Contention) für die Integration innovativer PHY Technologien verwendet werden kann. Opportunistische Kommunikation ist eine Technik, die die inhärenten Besonderheiten des drahtlosen Kanals ausnutzt. In der vorliegenden Dissertation werden CSMA-basierte Protokolle für die opportunistische Kommunikation in WMNs entwickelt und evaluiert. Es werden dabei opportunistisches Routing (OR) im zustandslosen Kanal und opportunistisches Scheduling (OS) im zustandsbehafteten Kanal betrachtet. Ziel ist es, den Durchsatz von elastischen Paketflüssen gerecht zu maximieren. Es werden Modelle für Überlastkontrolle, Routing und konkurrenzbasierte opportunistische Kommunikation vorgestellt. Am Beispiel von IEEE 802.11 wird illustriert, wie der schichtübergreifende Entwurf in einem Netzwerksimulator prototypisch implementiert werden kann. Auf Grundlage der Evaluationsresultate kann der Schluss gezogen werden, dass die opportunistische Kommunikation konkurrenzbasiert realisierbar ist. Darüber hinaus steigern die vorgestellten Protokolle den Durchsatz im Vergleich zu etablierten Lösungen wie etwa DCF, DSR, ExOR, RBAR und ETT.In the field of wireless communication, a tremendous progress can be observed especially at the lower layers. Innovative physical layer (PHY) concepts and technologies can be rapidly assimilated in cellular networks. Wireless mesh networks (WMNs), on the other hand, cannot keep up with the speed of innovation at the PHY due to their flat and decentralized architecture. Many innovative PHY technologies rely on multi-user communication, so that the established abstraction of the network stack does not work well for WMNs. The scheduling problem in WMNs is inherent complex. Surprisingly, carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) in WMNs is asymptotically utility-optimal even though it has a low computational complexity and does not involve message exchange. Hence, the question arises whether CSMA and the underlying concept of contention allows for the assimilation of advanced PHY technologies into WMNs. In this thesis, we design and evaluate contention protocols based on CSMA for opportunistic communication in WMNs. Opportunistic communication is a technique that relies on multi-user diversity in order to exploit the inherent characteristics of the wireless channel. In particular, we consider opportunistic routing (OR) and opportunistic scheduling (OS) in memoryless and slow fading channels, respectively. We present models for congestion control, routing and contention-based opportunistic communication in WMNs in order to maximize both throughput and fairness of elastic unicast traffic flows. At the instance of IEEE 802.11, we illustrate how the cross-layer algorithms can be implemented within a network simulator prototype. Our evaluation results lead to the conclusion that contention-based opportunistic communication is feasible. Furthermore, the proposed protocols increase both throughput and fairness in comparison to state-of-the-art approaches like DCF, DSR, ExOR, RBAR and ETT

    Achieving reliable and enhanced communication in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs)

    A thesis submitted to the University of Bedfordshire in partial fulfilment of the requirement for the degree of Doctor of PhilosophyWith the envisioned age of Internet of Things (IoTs), different aspects of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) will be linked so as to advance road transportation safety, ease congestion of road traffic, lessen air pollution, improve passenger transportation comfort and significantly reduce road accidents. In vehicular networks, regular exchange of current position, direction, speed, etc., enable mobile vehicle to foresee an imminent vehicle accident and notify the driver early enough in order to take appropriate action(s) or the vehicle on its own may take adequate preventive measures to avert the looming accident. Actualizing this concept requires use of shared media access protocol that is capable of guaranteeing reliable and timely broadcast of safety messages. This dissertation investigates the use of Network Coding (NC) techniques to enrich the content of each transmission and ensure improved high reliability of the broadcasted safety messages with less number of retransmissions. A Code Aided Retransmission-based Error Recovery (CARER) protocol is proposed. In order to avoid broadcast storm problem, a rebroadcasting vehicle selection metric η, is developed, which is used to select a vehicle that will rebroadcast the received encoded message. Although the proposed CARER protocol demonstrates an impressive performance, the level of incurred overhead is fairly high due to the use of complex rebroadcasting vehicle selection metric. To resolve this issue, a Random Network Coding (RNC) and vehicle clustering based vehicular communication scheme with low algorithmic complexity, named Reliable and Enhanced Cooperative Cross-layer MAC (RECMAC) scheme, is proposed. The use of this clustering technique enables RECMAC to subdivide the vehicular network into small manageable, coordinated clusters which further improve transmission reliability and minimise negative impact of network overhead. Similarly, a Cluster Head (CH) selection metric ℱ(\u1d457) is designed, which is used to determine and select the most suitably qualified candidate to become the CH of a particular cluster. Finally, in order to investigate the impact of available radio spectral resource, an in-depth study of the required amount of spectrum sufficient to support high transmission reliability and minimum latency requirements of critical road safety messages in vehicular networks was carried out. The performance of the proposed schemes was clearly shown with detailed theoretical analysis and was further validated with simulation experiments

    Medium access control design for all-IP and ad hoc wireless network

    Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol in a wireless network controls the access of wireless medium by mobile terminals, in order to achieve its fair and efficient sharing. It plays an important role in resource management and QoS support for applications. All-IP wireless WAN is fully IP protocol-based and it is a strong candidate beyond 3G (Third Generation Wireless Network). Ad hoc wireless network has recently been the topic of extensive research due to its ability to work properly without fixed infrastructure. This dissertation is composed of two main parts. The first part pursues a Prioritized Parallel Transmission MAC (PPTM) design for All-IP Wireless WAN. Two stages are used and each packet is with a priority level in PPTM. In stage 1, a pretransmission probability is calculated according to the continuous observation of the channel load for a certain period of time. In stage 2, a packet is prioritized and transmitted accordingly. It is modeled and analyzed as a nonpreemptive Head-Of-the-Line prioritized queueing system with Poisson arrival traffic pattern. Its performance is analyzed under three other traffic patterns, which are Constant Bit Rate, Exponential On/Off, and Pareto On/Off, by using a NS-2 simulator, and compared with that of Modified Channel Load Sensing Protocol. PPTM supports dynamic spread code allocation mechanism. A mobile terminal can apply for a spreading code according to the current channel condition. To use the idea of dynamic bandwidth allocation in PPTM for adhoc wireless network, a Dynamic-Rate-with-Collision-Avoidance (DRCA) MAC protocol is proposed in the second part of the dissertation. DRCA is based on spread spectrum technology. In DRCA, a terminal sets the spreading factor for a packet according to the activity level of neighboring nodes. If the total number of usable spreading codes with this spreading factor is less than the total number of mobile terminals in the network, to avoid collision, the spreading code id is broadcast such that other terminals can avoid using it when the packet is being transmitted. The performance of DRCA is theoretically analyzed in a slotted, single-hop, multi-user environment. To evaluate DRCA\u27s performance in an environment closed to a real one, a simulator that supports multi-hop, random mobility pattern is created with OPNET. Both theoretical and simulation results show that DRCA outperforms MACA/CT (Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance with Common Transmitter-based) in case if there are more than one communication pair and the ratio of inactive mobile terminals to active ones is high

    A MAC protocol for IP-based CDMA wireless networks.

    Thesis (M.Sc.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2005.The evolution of the intemet protocol (IP) to offer quality of service (QoS) makes it a suitable core network protocol for next generation networks (NGN). The QoS features incorporated to IP will enable future lP-based wireless networks to meet QoS requirements of various multimedia traffic. The Differentiated Service (Diffserv) Architecture is a promising QoS technology due to its scalability which arises from traffic flow aggregates. For this reason, in this dissertation a network infrastructure based on DiffServ is assumed. This architecture provides assured service (AS) and premium service (PrS) classes in addition to best-effort service (BE). The medium access control (MAC) protocol is one of the important design issues in wireless networks. In a wireless network carrying multimedia traffic, the MAC protocol is required to provide simultaneous support for a wide variety of traffic types, support traffic with delay and jitter bounds, and assign bandwidth in an efficient and fair manner among traffic classes. Several MAC protocols capable of supporting multimedia services have been proposed in the literature, the majority of which were designed for wireless A1M (Asynchronous Transfer Mode). The focus of this dissertation is on time division multiple access and code division multiple access (TDMAlCDMA) based MAC protocols that support QoS in lP-based wireless networks. This dissertation begins by giving a survey of wireless MAC protocols. The survey considers MAC protocols for centralised wireless networks and classifies them according to their multiple access technology and as well as their method of resource sharing. A novel TDMAlCDMA based MAC protocol incorporating techniques from existing protocols is then proposed. To provide the above-mentioned services, the bandwidth is partitioned amongst AS and PrS classes. The BE class utilizes the remaining bandwidth from the two classes because it does not have QoS requirements. The protocol employs a demand assignment (DA) scheme to support traffic from PrS and AS classes. BE traffic is supported by a random reservation access scheme with dual multiple access interference (MAl) admission thresholds. The performance of the protocol, i.e. the AS or PrS call blocking probability, and BE throughput are evaluated through Markov analytical models and Monte-Carlo simulations. Furthermore, the protocol is modified and incorporated into IEEE 802.16 broadband wireless access (BWA) network
