Combinatorics and Probability
For the past few decades, Combinatorics and Probability Theory have had a fruitful symbiosis, each benefitting from and influencing developments in the other. Thus to prove the existence of designs, probabilistic methods are used, algorithms to factorize integers need combinatorics and probability theory (in addition to number theory), and the study of random matrices needs combinatorics. In the workshop a great variety of topics exemplifying this interaction were considered, including problems concerning designs, Cayley graphs, additive number theory, multiplicative number theory, noise sensitivity, random graphs, extremal graphs and random matrices
Indexability, concentration, and VC theory
Degrading performance of indexing schemes for exact similarity search in high
dimensions has long since been linked to histograms of distributions of
distances and other 1-Lipschitz functions getting concentrated. We discuss this
observation in the framework of the phenomenon of concentration of measure on
the structures of high dimension and the Vapnik-Chervonenkis theory of

Bayesian astrostatistics: a backward look to the future
This perspective chapter briefly surveys: (1) past growth in the use of
Bayesian methods in astrophysics; (2) current misconceptions about both
frequentist and Bayesian statistical inference that hinder wider adoption of
Bayesian methods by astronomers; and (3) multilevel (hierarchical) Bayesian
modeling as a major future direction for research in Bayesian astrostatistics,
exemplified in part by presentations at the first ISI invited session on
astrostatistics, commemorated in this volume. It closes with an intentionally
provocative recommendation for astronomical survey data reporting, motivated by
the multilevel Bayesian perspective on modeling cosmic populations: that
astronomers cease producing catalogs of estimated fluxes and other source
properties from surveys. Instead, summaries of likelihood functions (or
marginal likelihood functions) for source properties should be reported (not
posterior probability density functions), including nontrivial summaries (not
simply upper limits) for candidate objects that do not pass traditional

Improved triangle counting in graph streams: Neighborhood multi-sampling
In this thesis, we study the problem of estimating the number of triangles of an undirected graph in the data stream model. Some of the well-known streaming algorithms work as follows: Sample a single triangle with high enough probability and repeat this basic step to obtain a global triangle count. For example, the neighborhood sampling algorithm attempts to sample a triangle by randomly choosing a single edge e, a single neighbor f of e and waits for a third edge that completes the triangle. The basic sampling step in the algorithm is repeated multiple times to obtain an estimate for the global triangle count in the input graph stream. In this work, we propose a multi-sampling variant of this algorithm. We provide a theoretical analysis of the algorithm and prove that it improves upon the known space and accuracy bounds. We experimentally show that this algorithm outperforms several well-known triangle counting streaming algorithms
