    Software development project management based on work breakdown structure and Odoo ERP

    Software Development Project Management is the most important part of the Software Development Life Cycle process. The stages in project development include Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling, and Closing. This research uses the Work Breakdown Structure approach, which is a method used in project management to break down complex work into smaller and more manageable parts. Work Breakdown Structure helps in organizing, classifying, and describing the work to be done in a project. Odoo ERP is part of the tools that can be used for project management. Testing the project module using Blackbox Testing. The test scenario includes functional testing of the project management module. Application testing shows good results and is following existing needs. The results show that software project management using the Work Breakdown Structure approach can be implemented properly with Odoo ERP tools

    Improvement of project management practices: a car industry case study

    Dissertação de mestrado integrado em Industrial Engineering and ManagementThe present master dissertation project was developed on a competence center (MFT3 section) at Bosch Car Multimedia in Braga. It has as main objective the improvement of project management practices in order to enhance the performance of this particular section in the organization, translated into a set of four sub-objectives: 1) redefinition of an integrated project management process; 2) definition of a template for project planning supported with Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) tool; 3) customization of a software tool to support the project management process; and 4) development of a performance measurement system. Firstly, a literature review was performed in order to understand which project management improvements could be proposed to MFT3 section at Bosch Car Multimedia in Braga. Important subjects were studied, such as organizational project management, including project, program and portfolio management; project planning and WBS; tools to support project and portfolio management; and project management success through performance measurement systems. Secondly, having a better theoretical knowledge about project management approaches, some improvements were proposed to accomplish the project’s dissertation objectives. The software customized to support the project management process was the software Track&Release which integrates the WBS template and improves time tracking, the visualization of every activity with its respective status, planning, prioritization of work and communication as well as decreases unproductive time and misunderstandings through organization of all team work. The Track&Release also allows data extraction in order to have relevant information to create interesting performance measurement indicators graphics. These graphics were created through an EXCEL file developed to transform the data from Track&Release to well-established key performance indicators graphics. Besides some difficulties on this research, namely the totally new environment for the researcher and the lack of time of Bosch collaborators, the established objectives were fulfilled and there was a significant contribution to the improvement of project management practice to MFT3 section at Bosch Car Multimedia in Braga, which makes this master dissertation project a successful one.A presente dissertação de mestrado foi desenvolvida no Centro de Competências de montagem de PCBs (secção MFT3) da Bosch Car Multimedia em Braga. A fim de melhorar o desempenho e organização desta secção, foi proposto como principal objetivo a melhoria das práticas de gestão de projetos, subdividindo este em quatro objetivos mais específicos: 1) redefinição do processo de gestão de projetos integrado; 2) definição de um template de planeamento de projetos apoiado pela ferramenta Work Breakdown Structure (WBS); 3) customização de um software para suporte da gestão de projetos; e 4) desenvolvimento de um sistema de medição de desempenho. Inicialmente foi realizada uma revisão da literatura de modo a apurar quais as melhorias que poderiam ser propostas à secção MFT3 da Bosch Car Multimedia em Braga. Vários assuntos foram estudados, tais como, organização da gestão de projetos, incluindo gestão de projeto, programa e portefólio; planeamento de projetos e WBS; ferramentas de apoio à gestão de projetos e portefólio; e sucesso aplicado à gestão de projetos por meio de sistemas de medição de desempenho. Após um conhecimento teórico mais sólido, foram propostas algumas melhorias para alcançar os objetivos do projeto de dissertação. Deste modo, o software personalizado para suportar o processo de gestão de projetos foi o Track&Release que integra o WBS template e acrescenta melhorias a nível do controlo de tempo, visualização de todas as atividades com seu respetivo status, planeamento, priorização de trabalho e comunicação, assim como diminui o tempo improdutivo e equívocos através da organização de todo o trabalho da equipa. O Track&Release também permite a extração de dados a fim de ter informações relevantes para criar gráficos de medição de indicadores de desempenho. Estes gráficos são criados através de um ficheiro de EXCEL desenvolvido para transformar os dados do Track&Release nos gráficos predefinidos. Apesar das dificuldades encontradas, nomeadamente a pouca experiência do investigador e a falta de tempo dos colaboradores da Bosch, os objetivos estabelecidos foram cumpridos e houve uma contribuição significativa para a melhoria da prática de gestão de projetos para a seção MFT3 na Bosch Car Multimedia em Braga

Benefits resulting from the use of an effective WBS include, but are not limited to: providing a basis for assigned project responsibilities, providing a basis for project schedule development, simplifying a project by dividing the total work scope into manageable units, and providing a common reference for all project communication

    Integrated learning of computer applications for production engineering

    A high productivity rate in Engineering is related to an efficient management of the flow of the large quantities of information and associated decision making activities that are consubstantial to the Engineering processes both in design and production contexts. Dealing with such problems from an integrated point of view and mimicking real scenarios is not given much attention in Engineering degrees. In the context of Engineering Education, there are a number of courses designed for developing specific competencies, as required by the academic curricula, but not that many in which integration competencies are the main target. In this paper, a course devoted to that aim is discussed. The course is taught in a Marine Engineering degree but the philosophy could be used in any Engineering field. All the lessons are given in a computer room in which every student can use each all the treated software applications. The first part of the course is dedicated to Project Management: the students acquire skills in defining, using Ms-PROJECT, the work breakdown structure (WBS), and the organization breakdown structure (OBS) in Engineering projects, through a series of examples of increasing complexity, ending up with the case of vessel construction. The second part of the course is dedicated to the use of a database manager, Ms-ACCESS, for managing production related information. A series of increasing complexity examples is treated ending up with the management of the pipe database of a real vessel. This database consists of a few thousand of pipes, for which a production timing frame is defined, which connects this part of the course with the first one. Finally, the third part of the course is devoted to the work with FORAN, an Engineering Production package of widespread use in the shipbuilding industry. With this package, the frames and plates where all the outfitting will be carried out are defined through cooperative work by the studens, working simultaneously in the same 3D model. In the paper, specific details about the learning process are given. Surveys have been posed to the students in order to get feed-back from their experience as well as to assess their satisfaction with the learning process.     Assessing the Effectiveness of Instructional Technology Tools in Online Business Programs

    An evaluation rubric was developed to assess instructional technology tools used within online business programs to enhance learner engagement and content presentation skills. The evaluation was designed to determine if the instructional technology within the lesson helped to engage the learner, impact the assessment of outcomes, and improve the ability to present the content of the learning material. In this case study example, an instructional lesson was developed to instruct learners in creating a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) using a project management software tool. This lesson was designed to be completed in 30 minutes or less. Step-by-step guides for obtaining a free copy of the project software application and creation of a WBS, including a visual example of a finished WBS, were built into this lesson. The lesson also included performance objective alignment to support future analysis of student performance across all courses in which this lesson existed within the Learning Management System (LMS). This evaluation rubric was built into the LMS for the evaluation team (n= 69) and yielded highly positive results of the training lesson across five categories of evaluation: (a) Technology Use (24.05/25), (b) Learner Engagement (19.05/20), (c) Goals and Objectives (19/20), (d) Assessment Value (19.05/20, and (e) Content Presentation (14.05/15). The rubric is one form of evaluation to address assessment elements within courseware development and will be validated in future research projects

    Increasing Efficiency in 5D BIM by Utilising ‘BIM Interoperability Tools – Classification Manager’ to Append ICMS Cost Codes

    Abstract ̶ This paper discusses Building Information Modelling (BIM), notably the 5th Dimension of BIM, which covers cost management functionality in the BIM workflow. The research proposes an efficient digitised workflow that can facilitate the appendage of an International Quantity Surveying (QS) Cost Code to a consistent parameter in the objects of the model. This paper firstly outlines how QSs are currently inserting ‘user defined’ information by adding their cost Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) to an existing parameter, such as the ‘keynote’ or ‘assembly code’. The QS also has the ability to create a QS specific parameter (QS IDentification), by adding an additional shared/project parameter to the model. QS WBSs are usually specific to the jurisdiction of the project, such as the ‘Uniformat’ in the United States or the ‘New Rules of Measurement’ in the United Kingdom. The International Construction Measurement Standard (ICMS) is an international standard produced by a coalition of global cost management professional bodies. ICMS seeks to provide a global standard for cost planning and cost reporting, from project conception through to the operation of the finished project. A subsequent edition will relate the standard to BIM and provide a global digitised cost management schema. In preparation for an ICMS digitised schema, this research explores a change to the current 5D BIM workflow, whereby, the 5D BIM QS can utilise the ‘BIM Interoperability Tools’ Revit Add-in, to efficiently append an ICMS cost code to a new QSID parameter in the object properties. This will provide efficiencies downstream in the QSs software providing users with the ability to extract QTO in line with these cost codes
