Review of computer vision in intelligent environment design
This paper discusses and compares the use of vision based and non-vision based technologies in developing intelligent environments. By reviewing the related projects that use vision based techniques in intelligent environment design, the achieved functions, technical issues and drawbacks of those projects are discussed and summarized, and the potential solutions for future improvement are proposed, which leads to the prospective direction of my PhD research
An Advanced Home ElderCare Service
With the increase of welfare cost all over the developed world, there is a need to resort to new technologies
that could help reduce this enormous cost and provide some quality eldercare services. This paper presents a
middleware-level solution that integrates monitoring and emergency detection solutions with networking solutions. The proposed system enables efficient integration between a variety of sensors and actuators deployed
at home for emergency detection and provides a framework for creating and managing rescue teams willing
to assist elders in case of emergency situations. A prototype of the proposed system was designed and implemented. Results were obtained from both computer simulations and a real-network testbed. These results show that the proposed system can help overcome some of the current problems and help reduce the enormous cost of eldercare service
Advanced algorithms of motion estimation for an elder at living room using Principal Component Analysis
Objective: Development of telemedicine for an elder has been an important research area in an aging society, and effective Personal Emergency Response System(PERS) can provide exact medical decision and prompt treatment under emergency conditions. Previous studies have been focused on adapting troublesome sensors or passive calling system to monitor the old in their house. However, these previous systems might have limited applications due to its difficulties in usage and restraints in their daily activities, especially in the emergency. Methods: In this study, the real time algorithms using surveillance camera was developed to monitor their pose change, such as emergency and falling motion. To estimate the motion of elder people, this research use a ratio of eigenvectors of the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) technique. Results: In this system, no additional motion sensors or devices were applied to the object and it can be automatically controlled and monitor the old from a distance. It was found that this system can successfully monitor the old in living room regardless of surveillance camera angles and a silhouette size depending camera distance as using image processing and PCA. Conclusion: This algorithm was validated by experiments in a living room and this technique can be applicable to home monitoring and further applications.ope
Gerontechnology acceptance of smart homes: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Advances in preventive medicine and technology have beneficially affected longevity in the past decades. Unfortunately, longer life expectancy and declining fertility are likely to trigger an increasingly aging population, posing new challenges for social systems. Since aging populations affect the healthcare industry, providing convenient solutions and user-friendly elderly healthcare services is necessary to curb the growing demand by older adults. Several studies have proposed intelligent homes as potential solutions to support old age. However, such solutions raise the question of whether or not elderly persons intend to use smart homes and benefit from them. This paper examines the gerontechnology acceptance of intelligent homes by systematically reviewing previous studies on older people\u27s intention to use innovative home technology. The review was conducted from the Web of Science, Google Scholar, and Scopus, retrieving a thousand articles. Out of these, 40 are selected for the meta-analysis and systematic review. The integrative results showed an increasing intention of older adults to use smart home technology as they believe those innovative ways may improve independent living. However, attributes and drivers like privacy and perceived security show increasing heterogeneity and should draw more attention to prospective researchers
ANGELAH: A Framework for Assisting Elders At Home
The ever growing percentage of elderly people within modern societies poses welfare systems under relevant stress. In fact, partial and progressive loss of motor, sensorial, and/or cognitive skills renders elders unable to live autonomously, eventually leading to their hospitalization. This results in both relevant emotional and economic costs. Ubiquitous computing technologies can offer interesting opportunities for in-house safety and autonomy. However, existing systems partially address in-house safety requirements and typically focus on only elder monitoring and emergency detection. The paper presents ANGELAH, a middleware-level solution integrating both ”elder monitoring and emergency detection” solutions and networking solutions. ANGELAH has two main features: i) it enables efficient integration between a variety of sensors and actuators deployed at home for emergency detection and ii) provides a solid framework for creating and managing rescue teams composed of individuals willing to promptly assist elders in case of emergency situations. A prototype of ANGELAH, designed for a case study for helping elders with vision impairments, is developed and interesting results are obtained from both computer simulations and a real-network testbed
Deliberative Context-Aware Ambient Intelligence System for Assisted Living Homes
Monitoring wellbeing and stress is one of the problems covered by ambient
intelligence, as stress is a significant cause of human illnesses directly
affecting our emotional state. The primary aim was to propose a deliberation
architecture for an ambient intelligence healthcare application. The
architecture provides a plan for comforting stressed seniors suffering from
negative emotions in an assisted living home and executes the plan considering
the environment's dynamic nature. Literature was reviewed to identify the
convergence between deliberation and ambient intelligence and the latter's
latest healthcare trends. A deliberation function was designed to achieve
context-aware dynamic human-robot interaction, perception, planning
capabilities, reactivity, and context-awareness with regard to the environment.
A number of experimental case studies in a simulated assisted living home
scenario were conducted to demonstrate the approach's behavior and validity.
The proposed methods were validated to show classification accuracy. The
validation showed that the deliberation function has effectively achieved its
deliberative objectives

Technological memory aid use by people with acquired brain injury
Evans, Wilson, Needham, and Brentnall (2003) investigated memory aid use by people with acquired brain injury (ABI) and found little use of technological memory aids. The present study aims to investigate use of technological and other memory aids and strategies 10 years on, and investigate what predicts use. People with ABI and self-reported memory impairments (n = 81) completed a survey containing a memory aid checklist, demographic questions and memory questionnaires. Chi-square analysis showed that 10 of 18 memory aids and strategies were used by significantly more people in the current sample than in Evans et al. (2003). The most commonly used strategies were leaving things in noticeable places (86%) and mental retracing of steps (77%). The most commonly used memory aids were asking someone to remind you (78%), diaries (77%), lists (78%), and calendars (79%) and the most common technologies used were mobile phone reminders (38%) and alarms/timers (38%). Younger people who used more technology prior to their injury and who use more non-technological memory aids currently were more likely to use technology. Younger people who used more memory aids and strategies prior to their injury and who rated their memory as poorer were more likely to use all types of memory aids and strategies
Ethical issues in the use of surveillance cameras to support ageing in place
Background and Objective: Surveillance technology allows family members to monitor older adults’ daily activities and their interaction with the home environment. In particular, video surveillance cameras and surveillance technology’s implementation raises critical ethical concerns due to their invasive and obtrusive nature. Thus, this paper aims to address the ethical issues regarding the use of video surveillance for older adults to age in place. Methods: A literature review is conducted using Springerlink, Sciencedirect, and PubMed Publications related to older adults’ care, ageing in place, and the use of surveillance technologies were included in this project. Results: A total of 19 publications met the inclusion criteria. Nine ethical issues emerged from the data: informed consent, privacy, conflict of interest, stigmatization and obtrusiveness, homogeneity among older adults, and imbalance relationship. These nine themes were further explored in respect to ethical principles, including autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice and fidelity) Conclusion: Although surveillance cameras can be invasive, well-grounded ethical thinking and proactive response help reduce the risk and ethical challenges associated with it. By examining the ethical issue in video surveillance, it helps to reflect and enhance the current legislation
