“Thus Far the Words of Jeremiah” But who gets the last word?

I\u27ll never forget the first time a movie star talked to me. At the end of his television show, Roy Rogers looked right into the camera and sang to me, Happy trails to you, until we meet again. A similar thing happened to my children when Mister Rogers smiled into the camera and reassured them, I like you just the way you are. These moments stand out in our memory because it is so odd-even jarring when an actor or a storyteller steps outside the world of the story, as it were, and enters our own. Sometimes it becomes clear that there are actually three worlds involved: the world of the viewer, the world of the story and the world of the actor. This becomes apparent whenever actors look into the camera and take off their wigs, revealing the distance between themselves and the story

Re-collecting Jim. Discovering a name and a slave narrative's continuing truth

In a follow-up installment in 1839 to the anonymously authored Recollections of Slavery by a Runaway Slave, the narrator testifies that a Charleston slave speculator known as "Major Ross" had sold his brother. The narrator notes that Ross lives in "a nice little white house, on the right hand side of King street as you go in from the country towards the market." The right-hand side? Was that level of precision necessary? Because people challenged the veracity of slave narratives at the time they were published, details mattered very much. But the level of specificity in this instance caught my eye. The facts were borne out: property records in the Charleston County Register Mesne Conveyance Deeds office show that in 1831, a James L. Ross, known also as "Major Ross," purchased a house situated on the west side of King Street, just a few blocks north of the market. If you were entering the city of Charleston from the country, Ross' house would indeed have been on the right-hand side (fig 1). And so it comes down to that. In order to prove his own humanity, the truth about the human capacity for cruelty, and the very reputation of abolitionist crusaders of the American Anti-Slavery Society, this survivor made his story unassailable by giving the correct location for the speculator's house on King Street in Charleston

This article tells a story about teaching as an act of love, about an instructor who discovered theater as a teaching tool and combined it with working class values and rituals in order to remake the culture of higher education in a classroom of adult learners. The story speaks to the intersection of the arts, Jesuit values of higher education and the person/background of the teacher at just the right time. The story is one of humility

Playing social justice: How do early childhood teachers enact the right to play through resistance and subversion?

    Get PDF
In this paper we narrate how two teachers enact playful pedagogies by resisting the single story of formalised learning discourses in early childhood education and care. Playful learning is well established in international literature and children have the right to play. Yet in contemporary outcomes-driven policy, adult-led formalised teaching has become normalised at the expense of child-initiated play. Play is thus marginalised; positioned as a privilege rather than as a right and dependent on views of children as capable holders of rights. Here, we position play in relation to democracy, equity and social justice by storying how teachers’ circumvent scrutiny to facilitate the right to play and we argue this as a fruitful sub-context for resistance. From this perspective, teachers’ resistances do not just enable play, they embody and enact representative and democratic justice. Firstly, teachers story representative forms of social justice as ‘being the right thing’ in making play happen.  Secondly, teachers enact democratic forms of social justice through resistance actions of ‘doing the right thing’ that entangle an emotional vulnerability to scrutiny. Adopting alternative resistance positions shifts play beyond a privilege and creates transformational spaces for social justice where time, space and materiality have a role to play. We call on teachers and educators to deepen their critical awareness of the narrowness of a single story of learning and the rich relationships between rights and play agendas. We assert that teachers’ resistances can enable playful pedagogies and act as hopeful storytelling of social justice as serious play.

MONTREAL WORLD FILM FESTIVAL 2004 The 28th Montreal World Film Festival (26 August to 6 September 2004) is the story of the right film being at the right festival at the right time. Eran Riklis's Hacala Hasurit (The Syrian Bride, Israel-France-Germany) was awarded the four top prizes: Grand Prize of the Americas, FIPRESCI (International Critics) Prize, Ecumenical Prize, and the Air Canada People's Choice Prize. Never mind that the same film had also been voted the Prix du publique at the Locarno festival in August, for the FIAPF rules governing the eligibility of competition films in major festival are currently undergoing drastic change - due in great part, one might add, to last year's decision by Montreal director Serge Losique to drop his festival membership. And one can only cheer the good fortune of a modest film with quality production credits directed by an Israeli based in London, whose..

The Goldilocks Method: Demonstrating Your Value in Small, Medium, and Large Bites

Background: In an era of financial constraint hospital libraries are facing closer scrutiny and must prove their value in order to survive. Leadership at a large health system library found the traditional written annual report lacked the impact needed to capture the attention and the imagination of administration. Taking different approaches over the years, this library has found a solution that is “just right”, creating three very different documents – small, medium, and large – to demonstrate its worth. Description: Library leadership moved away from the traditional written annual report toward a one-page infographic that depicted the library’s scope, scale, and impact. This visual representation of library statistics captured the attention of administration and patrons in a new, compelling way. As it didn’t allow for telling deeper stories of special projects and partnerships, the library later added back in a written supplement and a “Selected Thanks” section that directly quoted satisfied library patrons. But, when the library’s very existence was at stake, the need for a much more comprehensive value-case was necessary, and a 20-page white paper tied to the organization’s strategic plan and key initiatives was created. Providing an annual report in 3 different formats – small, medium, and large, allows the library to tell just the right story, to the right person, in the right place. Conclusion: Reporting on library usage statistics, initiatives, and successes in different formats has allowed the health system library to tell its story in just the right way at the right time. The posted infographic provides a lasting snapshot that draws people in. As such, it has been viewed by far more people than reports in the past. The written supplement tells stories from our patrons, and is delivered to key leadership. The value-case effectively tied ALL the work the library does directly to the institution’s strategic goals, and this past year effectively convinced senior leadership to stave off cuts.https://digitalcommons.psjhealth.org/other_pubs/1060/thumbnail.jp

Developing an understanding of the Civil War is an essential part of the curriculum in American schools today. And little wonder: unlike other conflicts in American history, the whole story happens here, at home. The story of the Civil War is the story of us fighting with us, and the conflict shaped not only the immediate situation, but also successive generations of Americans right up to the present day. How can parents and teachers help children and young adolescents understand this pivotal time period in American history? Posting about teaching and the Civil War from In All Things - an online hub committed to the claim that the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ has implications for the entire world. http://inallthings.org/placing-ourselves-in-the-story
