    The ability to fly has greatly expanded the possibilities for robots to perform surveillance, inspection or map generation tasks. Yet it was only in recent years that research in aerial robotics was mature enough to allow active interactions with the environment. The robots responsible for these interactions are called aerial manipulators and usually combine a multirotor platform and one or more robotic arms. The main objective of this thesis is to formalize the concept of aerial manipulator and present guidance methods, using visual information, to provide them with autonomous functionalities. A key competence to control an aerial manipulator is the ability to localize it in the environment. Traditionally, this localization has required external infrastructure of sensors (e.g., GPS or IR cameras), restricting the real applications. Furthermore, localization methods with on-board sensors, exported from other robotics fields such as simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), require large computational units becoming a handicap in vehicles where size, load, and power consumption are important restrictions. In this regard, this thesis proposes a method to estimate the state of the vehicle (i.e., position, orientation, velocity and acceleration) by means of on-board, low-cost, light-weight and high-rate sensors. With the physical complexity of these robots, it is required to use advanced control techniques during navigation. Thanks to their redundancy on degrees-of-freedom, they offer the possibility to accomplish not only with mobility requirements but with other tasks simultaneously and hierarchically, prioritizing them depending on their impact to the overall mission success. In this work we present such control laws and define a number of these tasks to drive the vehicle using visual information, guarantee the robot integrity during flight, and improve the platform stability or increase arm operability. The main contributions of this research work are threefold: (1) Present a localization technique to allow autonomous navigation, this method is specifically designed for aerial platforms with size, load and computational burden restrictions. (2) Obtain control commands to drive the vehicle using visual information (visual servo). (3) Integrate the visual servo commands into a hierarchical control law by exploiting the redundancy of the robot to accomplish secondary tasks during flight. These tasks are specific for aerial manipulators and they are also provided. All the techniques presented in this document have been validated throughout extensive experimentation with real robotic platforms.La capacitat de volar ha incrementat molt les possibilitats dels robots per a realitzar tasques de vigilància, inspecció o generació de mapes. Tot i això, no és fins fa pocs anys que la recerca en robòtica aèria ha estat prou madura com per començar a permetre interaccions amb l’entorn d’una manera activa. Els robots per a fer-ho s’anomenen manipuladors aeris i habitualment combinen una plataforma multirotor i un braç robòtic. L’objectiu d’aquesta tesi és formalitzar el concepte de manipulador aeri i presentar mètodes de guiatge, utilitzant informació visual, per dotar d’autonomia aquest tipus de vehicles. Una competència clau per controlar un manipulador aeri és la capacitat de localitzar-se en l’entorn. Tradicionalment aquesta localització ha requerit d’infraestructura sensorial externa (GPS, càmeres IR, etc.), limitant així les aplicacions reals. Pel contrari, sistemes de localització exportats d’altres camps de la robòtica basats en sensors a bord, com per exemple mètodes de localització i mapejat simultànis (SLAM), requereixen de gran capacitat de còmput, característica que penalitza molt en vehicles on la mida, pes i consum elèctric son grans restriccions. En aquest sentit, aquesta tesi proposa un mètode d’estimació d’estat del robot (posició, velocitat, orientació i acceleració) a partir de sensors instal·lats a bord, de baix cost, baix consum computacional i que proporcionen mesures a alta freqüència. Degut a la complexitat física d’aquests robots, és necessari l’ús de tècniques de control avançades. Gràcies a la seva redundància de graus de llibertat, aquests robots ens ofereixen la possibilitat de complir amb els requeriments de mobilitat i, simultàniament, realitzar tasques de manera jeràrquica, ordenant-les segons l’impacte en l’acompliment de la missió. En aquest treball es presenten aquestes lleis de control, juntament amb la descripció de tasques per tal de guiar visualment el vehicle, garantir la integritat del robot durant el vol, millorar de l’estabilitat del vehicle o augmentar la manipulabilitat del braç. Aquesta tesi es centra en tres aspectes fonamentals: (1) Presentar una tècnica de localització per dotar d’autonomia el robot. Aquest mètode està especialment dissenyat per a plataformes amb restriccions de capacitat computacional, mida i pes. (2) Obtenir les comandes de control necessàries per guiar el vehicle a partir d’informació visual. (3) Integrar aquestes accions dins una estructura de control jeràrquica utilitzant la redundància del robot per complir altres tasques durant el vol. Aquestes tasques son específiques per a manipuladors aeris i també es defineixen en aquest document.     Visual Servoing For Robotic Positioning And Tracking Systems

    Visual servoing is a robot control method in which camera sensors are used inside the control loop and visual feedback is introduced into the robot control loop to enhance the robot control performance in accomplishing tasks in unstructured environments. In general, visual servoing can be categorized into image-based visual servoing (IBVS), position-based visual servoing (PBVS), and hybrid approach. To improve the performance and robustness of visual servoing systems, the research on IBVS for robotic positioning and tracking systems mainly focuses on aspects of camera configuration, image features, pose estimation, and depth determination. In the first part of this research, two novel multiple camera configurations of visual servoing systems are proposed for robotic manufacturing systems for positioning large-scale workpieces. The main advantage of these two multiple camera configurations is that the depths of target objects or target features are constant or can be determined precisely by using computer vision. Hence the accuracy of the interaction matrix is guaranteed, and thus the positioning performances of visual servoing systems can be improved remarkably. The simulation results show that the proposed multiple camera configurations of visual servoing for large-scale manufacturing systems can satisfy the demand of high-precision positioning and assembly in the aerospace industry. In the second part of this research, two improved image features for planar central symmetrical-shaped objects are proposed based on image moment invariants, which can represent the pose of target objects with respect to camera frame. A visual servoing controller based on the proposed image moment features is designed and thus the control performance of the robotic tracking system is improved compared with the method based on the commonly used image moment features. Experimental results on a 6-DOF robot visual servoing system demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method. Lastly, to address the challenge of choosing proper image features for planar objects to get maximal decoupled structure of the interaction matrix, the neural network (NN) is applied as the estimator of target object poses with respect to camera frame based on the image moment invariants. Compared with previous methods, this scheme avoids image interaction matrix singularity and image local minima in IBVS. Furthermore, the analytical form of depth computation is given by using classical geometrical primitives and image moment invariants. A visual servoing controller is designed and the tracking performance is enhanced for robotic tracking systems. Experimental results on a 6-DOF robot system are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme

    Advanced Source Reconstruction and Volume Conductor Modeling for Fetal Magnetocardiography

    Abstract Fetuses that are identified with cardiac hypotrophy, hypertension and metabolic anomalies have higher risk of suffering from various health problems in their later life. Therefore, the early detection of congenital heart anomalies is critical for monitoring or prompt interventions, which can reduce the risks of congestive heart failure. Compared to adult cardiac monitoring, fetal electrophysiological heart monitoring using fetal ECG is extremely difficult due to the low signal amplitude and interferences from the maternal cardiac signal and to the complex environment inside the mother's womb. This problem is even worse in conditions such as diabetic pregnancies because of further signal reduction due to maternal obesity. At the same time, the prevalence of congenital heart anomalies is higher for fetuses of diabetic mothers. The purpose of this thesis is to develop and test fetal magnetocardiography (fMCG) techniques as an alternative diagnostic tool for the detection and monitoring of the fetal heart. fMCG is a novel technique that records the magnetic fields generated by the fetal heart's electric activity. From the aspect of signal processing, magnetic signals generated by the fetal heart are less affected by the low electrical conductivity of the surrounding fetal and maternal tissues compared to the electric signals recorded over the maternal abdomen, and can provide reliable recordings as early as 12 weeks of gestation. However, the fetal heart signals recorded with an array of magnetic sensors at a small distance from the maternal abdomen are affected by the source-to-sensor distance as well as by the geometry of the volume conductor, which is variable in different subjects or in the same subject when recordings are made at different gestational ages. The scope of this thesis is to develop a novel methodology for modeling the fetal heart and volume conductor and to use advanced source reconstruction techniques that can reduce the effect of these confounding factors in evaluating heart magnetic signals. Furthermore, we aim to use these new methods for developing a normative database of fMCG metrics at different gestational ages and test their reliability to detect abnormal patterns of cardiac electrophysiology in pregnancies complicated by maternal diabetes. In the first part of the thesis, we review three current fetal heart monitoring modalities, including fetal electrocardiography (ECG), ultrasonography, and fetal magnetocardiography (fMCG). The advantages and drawbacks of each technique are comparatively discussed. Finally, we discuss the developmental changes of fetal heart through gestation as well as the electromagnetic characteristics of the fetal cardiac activation

    Die vorliegende Arbeit zeigt ein Verfahren zur kraftgesteuerten Kontaktierung unbekannter harter Freiformflächen mit einem Standard–6DOF-Industriemanipulator (z.B. Manutec R2). Die bisher entwickelten Verfahren auf dem Gebiet der Manipulatorkraftregelung waren auf teure, fragile, mehrdimensionale Kraft-/Momentensensoren am Manipulator-Endeffektor angewiesen, die bei dem in dieser Arbeit entwickelten Ansatz der sensorlosen Kraft-/Geschwindigkeitsregelung überflüssig werden. Die Einstellung der gewünschten Kontaktkraft zu der unbekannten Umgebung erfolgt ausschließlich über eine robuste, beobachtergestützte Regelung der Motorströme der Gelenkantriebe. In freien Bewegungsphasen garantierte eine kaskadierte Kraft-/Geschwindigkeitsregelung vordefinierte Heranfahrgeschwindigkeiten an die unbekannte Kontaktoberfläche. Hierdurch eröffnen sich vollkommen neue Einsatzszenarien für die kraftkontrollierte Kontaktierung und Bearbeitung unbekannter Oberflächen oder Werkstücke beliebiger Härte und Steifigkeit
