In-flight simulation study of decoupled longitudinal controls for the approach and landing of a STOL aircraft

    Get PDF
In this decoupled concept, the natural interactions of the flight variables were suppressed, and the pilot operated a separate controller for each (fore-and-aft control column for flight path angle without speed or pitch attitude change, for example). The handling qualities of the decoupled airplane were judged to be very favorable. The precise path control led to small touchdown point dispersion along with consistently low sink rates. The decoupled control system provided significantly better flying qualities than did conventional SAS applied to the same basic airframe

Empirical Literature on the Business Pitch: Classes, Critiques and Future Trends

    Get PDF
The growing importance of entrepreneurship and innovation for economic growth has propitiated a discursive genre that nowadays is almost omnipresent, i.e., the pitch. As with other emerging genres used in professional settings (e.g., selling presentations, business plans, etc.), several instructional discourses regarding the pitch have come out in the form of manuals and courses offering training on “how to make a pitch more powerful”. Empirical research, however, is less common. The aim of this paper is to qualitatively review and sort out the existing empirical research on the pitch. For this, three classifying categories are proposed according to its reception (mainly by investors), the focus on discursive features, and its evolution. Finally, some critiques to the empirical research on the pitch and a description of some future trends on the field are provided. This work may be useful for professionals interested in innovation and entrepreneurship, areas in which this emerging discourse broadly circulates

    Science Communication Portfolio

Document describes the theory and practice of verbal and written science communication strategies, and provides an example portfolio on the topic of sea level rise. Are you working on a research manuscript, grant, annual report, or project summary that requires technical language? Do you feel that your finding, if communicated properly, could be useful to people beyond your professional network? This communication-training document for scientists is designed to help you do just that – on your own time and for a variety of verbal and written communication styles. We also provide an example portfolio on the topic of sea level rise for reference.Center for Microbial Oceanography: Research and Education (NSF #0424599, Wood-Charlson); Union of Concerned Scientists (Varga

Short duration campaign simulation increases high school students\u27 civic engagement skills and knowledge

    Get PDF
Research on campaign simulations usually involves long-term collegiate activities. Our research adapted materials from the American Association of University Women and Running Start’s “Elect Her–Campus Women Win” college workshops to create a short-term campaign simulation for use in high school social studies classrooms. Sixty-six students in three high school Advanced Placement US Government classes engaged in a two-day communications-focused elections simulation workshop. Differences in civic engagement knowledge between pre- and post-surveys reached statistical significance. Students’ qualitative responses revealed gains in understanding of the role of student government in allocating money, low-cost advertising, and use of “surrogates” to disseminate campaign positions. Improvement in students’ elevator speeches was particularly impressive. Results indicate simulations of short duration can be effective in influencing students’ knowledge of civic engagement when the knowledge is actively used in the simulation exercise

Evaluation of Control Inputs on the Spin Recovery of the 8KCAB Super Decathlon

    Get PDF
The current Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) response to stall/spin related accidents is prevention through pilot awareness training and encouraging stall proof aircraft design features. Aircraft have an inherent capability to spin. The controls that influence spin recovery have yet to be quantitatively analyzed in a regression analysis. This thesis presents the regression modeling and validation process for the evaluation of control inputs on the spin recovery of the 8KCAB Super Decathlon. The regression models in this thesis explore the control inputs for factors of: rudder, elevator, and aileron. Additionally, this thesis explores the timing of the control inputs factors for sequenced as well as simultaneous application. The research presented is of interest to general aviation pilot community with limited exposure to spins and variations of spin recovery methods. Aircraft spins have become taboo and avoided by all but the most experienced pilots and researchers. The research here is focused on the evaluation of control inputs on spin recovery qualities. While this research is limited to the 8KCAB super decathlon type aircraft, the aircraft is a good representation of the general aviation community

    When I count to four
: James Brown, Kraftwerk, and the practice of musical time-keeping before Techno

Of all creative artists, wrote Hector Berlioz in his famous orchestration treatise, the composer is almost the only one to depend on a host of intermediaries between him and his audience (Berlioz, 2002 [1856]: 336). These intermediaries – the orchestra and its leader and time keeper, the conductor – may be intelligent or stupid, devoted or hostile, energetic or lazy; from first to last they can contribute to the glory of [the] work, or they can spoil it, insult it, or even wreck it completely (Ibid.). From written score to performance, realizing a composer\u27s work of music becomes an acute problem of both collective action and aesthetic interpretation. The chief mediator between the composer\u27s artistic intention and its social realization is the conductor, who through his or her authority not only asserts and determines the tempo of a performance, but also establishes its nuance, feeling, and overall interpretation

Towards a Cross-Disciplinary Sound Design Methodology: A Focus on Semiotics and Linguistics

    Get PDF
This thesis delves into the intricate world of sound design, focusing on the development of a methodology that encompasses various disciplines. It explores the role of sound design in conveying messages, serving as an interface between users and devices. The study also investigates the parallels between semiotics and linguistics and sound design, interpreting how sounds can act as signs that represent other entities, based on established social conventions and how we can use linguistics as a model to create non-speech sounds that just like language systematically convey meaning to the user. Through this comprehensive analysis, the work aims to contribute to the field by proposing a cross-disciplinary methodology for sound design, thereby enhancing the auditory experience in diverse contexts
