Prosthetic EMG control enhancement through the application of man-machine principles

    Get PDF
An area in medicine that appears suitable to man-machine principles is rehabilitation research, particularly when the motor aspects of the body are involved. If one considers the limb, whether functional or not, as the machine, the brain as the controller and the neuromuscular system as the man-machine interface, the human body is reduced to a man-machine system that can benefit from the principles behind such systems. The area of rehabilitation that this paper deals with is that of an arm amputee and his prosthetic device. Reducing this area to its man-machine basics, the problem becomes one of attaining natural multiaxis prosthetic control using Electromyographic activity (EMG) as the means of communication between man and prothesis. In order to use EMG as the communication channel it must be amplified and processed to yield a high information signal suitable for control. The most common processing scheme employed is termed Mean Value Processing. This technique for extracting the useful EMG signal consists of a differential to single ended conversion to the surface activity followed by a rectification and smoothing

The evolution of cauterization: from the hot iron to the Bovie.

The Bovie electrocautery has become a fundamental tool of modern-day surgery, particularly for its integral role in hemostasis, yet despite this landmark invention and its widespread use, there is very little said about the man behind the machine: William T. Bovie. It would be thousands of years from the inception of cautery in medicine until the birth of Dr. Bovie and his device. However, his work in biophysics and collaboration with Dr. Harvey Cushing would revolutionize surgical practice in the early 20th century and forever ingrain his name into the field of surgery

Postcard: Men Cutting and Moving Wood

This black and white photographic postcard features a group of men at a machine that cuts large logs mechanically. The man on the left is carrying a cut log over to the log pile in the foreground. Four men are behind the machine. The man on the left is closest to the table saw and is holding the uncut log. The three men to the right of him are watching the process. The man on the right holds a large branch. Handwriting is on the back of the card.https://scholars.fhsu.edu/tj_postcards/1967/thumbnail.jp

From La Mettrie's voluptuous machine man to the perverse core of psychology

Julien Offray de La Mettrie (1709—1751) solved the problem of Cartesian dualism by denying the res cogitans any substance as such. He thus provided science with a basic paradigm which is still respected today. For La Mettrie, all aspects of the soul have to be considered as aspects of the res extensa: man is a machine. However, the emptying of the res cogito is not without a remainder. A zero level of subjectivity is left behind. This paper argues that it is through this remainder that modern subjectivity is structurally linked to the academic and, moreover, psychological gaze. It is further argued that the paradoxes of this modern stance are what prompt La Mettrie to put forward his voluptuous subject, his attempt to escape the abyss of the zero level of subjectivity. In this way, La Mettrie’s naturalized and scientific hedonism contains the germs of Marquis de Sade’s appropriation of the Enlightenment project. Hence this paper attempts to explore the extent to which La Mettrie’s L’homme machine, a key text in 18th-century materialism, has led to a perverse disposition in the modern psy-sciences

    An Interaction in glass

    Get PDF
This thesis is a conceptual look at the relationship between mankind and nature. Initially this was to be accomplished using blown glass forms in conjunction with fabricated or found objects such as tool or machine parts. This idea eventually evolved into the use of vessels and organic glass forms to achieve the same objectives. There are two major components of this thesis. The first section will explain the concept behind my thesis statement that is a relationship exists between man and nature. It will also be a vague outline showing the stages of thought that lead to me to my final pieces. The second section will explain the technical processes and what knowledge I gained from these processes. This thesis is an attempt to show the direct correlation and relationship between human life and nature. The balance between the human race and nature has been unequally weighted for many years throughout history. From the beginning of the Industrial Revolution to modern day technology, man has continued to exert its control over nature. Once we, the human race, became aware that we could benefit from controlling nature, we used it to further our needs. Today man kind is slowly becoming more aware of the loss of the very precious balance it once had with nature. Artists use their medium to arouse questions dealing with issues that they feel are important. As a glass blower, I chose glass to represent my viewpoint that there is a balance between man and nature. With this idea in mind, I tried to create pieces that addressed my overwhelming concern about this issue

Man and Machine: Questions of Risk, Trust and Accountability in Today's AI Technology

Artificial Intelligence began as a field probing some of the most fundamental questions of science - the nature of intelligence and the design of intelligent artifacts. But it has grown into a discipline that is deeply entwined with commerce and society. Today's AI technology, such as expert systems and intelligent assistants, pose some difficult questions of risk, trust and accountability. In this paper, we present these concerns, examining them in the context of historical developments that have shaped the nature and direction of AI research. We also suggest the exploration and further development of two paradigms, human intelligence-machine cooperation, and a sociological view of intelligence, which might help address some of these concerns.Comment: Preprin
