    Future Astronomical Observatories on the Moon

    Papers at a workshop which consider the topic astronomical observations from a lunar base are presented. In part 1, the rationale for performing astronomy on the Moon is established and economic factors are considered. Part 2 includes concepts for individual lunar based telescopes at the shortest X-ray and gamma ray wavelengths, for high energy cosmic rays, and at optical and infrared wavelengths. Lunar radio frequency telescopes are considered in part 3, and engineering considerations for lunar base observatories are discussed in part 4. Throughout, advantages and disadvantages of lunar basing compared to terrestrial and orbital basing of observatories are weighted. The participants concluded that the Moon is very possibly the best location within the inner solar system from which to perform front-line astronomical research

    Ionospheric correction of interferometric SAR data with application to the cryospheric sciences

    Thesis (Ph.D.) University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2018The ionosphere has been identified as an important error source for spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data and SAR Interferometry (InSAR), especially for low frequency SAR missions, operating, e.g., at L-band or P-band. Developing effective algorithms for the correction of ionospheric effects is still a developing and active topic of remote sensing research. The focus of this thesis is to develop robust and accurate techniques for ionospheric correction of SAR and InSAR data and evaluate the benefit of these techniques for cryospheric research fields such as glacier ice velocity tracking and permafrost deformation monitoring. As both topics are mostly concerned with high latitude areas where the ionosphere is often active and characterized by turbulence, ionospheric correction is particularly relevant for these applications. After an introduction to the research topic in Chapter 1, Chapter 2 will discuss open issues in ionospheric correction including processing issues related to baseline-induced spectrum shifts. The effect of large baseline on split spectrum InSAR technique has been thoroughly evaluated and effective solutions for compensating this effect are proposed. In addition, a multiple sub-band approach is proposed for increasing the algorithm robustness and accuracy. Selected case studies are shown with the purpose of demonstrating the performance of the developed algorithm. In Chapter 3, the developed ionospheric correction technology is applied to optimize InSAR-based ice velocity measurements over the big ice sheets in Greenland and the Antarctic. Selected case studies are presented to demonstrate and validate the effectiveness of the proposed correction algorithms for ice velocity applications. It is shown that the ionosphere signal can be larger than the actual glacier motion signal in the interior of Greenland and Antarctic, emphasizing the necessity for operational ionospheric correction. The case studies also show that the accuracy of ice velocity estimates was significantly improved once the developed ionospheric correction techniques were integrated into the data processing flow. We demonstrate that the proposed ionosphere correction outperforms the traditionally-used approaches such as the averaging of multi-temporal data and the removal of obviously affected data sets. For instance, it is shown that about one hundred multi-temporal ice velocity estimates would need to be averaged to achieve the estimation accuracy of a single ionosphere-corrected measurement. In Chapter 4, we evaluate the necessity and benefit of ionospheric-correction for L-band InSAR-based permafrost research. In permafrost zones, InSAR-based surface deformation measurements are used together with geophysical models to estimate permafrost parameters such as active layer thickness, soil ice content, and permafrost degradation. Accurate error correction is needed to avoid biases in the estimated parameters and their co-variance properties. Through statistical analyses of a large number of L-band InSAR data sets over Alaska, we show that ionospheric signal distortions, at different levels of magnitude, are present in almost every InSAR dataset acquired in permafrost-affected regions. We analyze the ionospheric correction performance that can be achieved in permafrost zones by statistically analyzing correction results for large number of InSAR data. We also investigate the impact of ionospheric correction on the performance of the two main InSAR approaches that are used in permafrost zones: (1) we show the importance of ionospheric correction for permafrost deformation estimation from discrete InSAR observations; (2) we demonstrate that ionospheric correction leads to significant improvements in the accuracy of time-series InSAR-based permafrost products. Chapter 5 summarizes the work conducted in this dissertation and proposes next steps in this field of research

    Contributions to land, sea, and sea ice remote sensing using GNSS-reflectometry

    This PhD thesis researches the use of passive remote sensing techniques using signals transmitted from the navigation satellites (GNSS) in order to retrieve different geophysical parameters. The thesis consists of two different parts without taking into account the introduction, the state of the art and the conclusions. The first part analyzes the Interference Pattern Technique (IPT), which was previously used in another PhD thesis, and proposes some key improvements. First, the addition of horizontal polarization to the existing vertical polarization is proposed. Then, the retrieval of soil moisture is studied using the horizontal polarization only and combining both polarizations to correct for the surface roughness effects. It is also demonstrated that the phase difference between the two interference patterns is directly related to soil moisture content. A field campaign was conducted in Australia to test empirically all the theoretical developments and algorithms. Secondly, the possibility of measuring Significant Wave Height (SWH) and Mean Sea Surface Level (MSSL) using the IPT is studied. A three month field campaign over coastal sea is devoted to that study. The SWH retrieval is a new estimation algorithm based on measuring the point where the interference pattern loses coherence. The MSSL retrieval is based on the estimation of the IPT oscillation frequency, testing different spectral estimators to improve the accuracy. Since the IPT is limited in coverage due to its static requirements, the research conducted in this thesis migrated to scatterometric GNSS-R techniques. The main goal that migration was to increase coverage of the different GNSS-R instruments. Therefore, the second part of this thesis analyzes the applicability of a scatterometric technique from different platforms: ground-based (mobile and fixed), airborne, and spaceborne. The ground-based still platforms have allowed to develop a soil moisture retrieval algorithm. The ground-based moving platforms have extended the validity of that algorithm. Airborne platforms have been used to study the reflected electric field statistics when the surface reflecting surface is varying (smooth or rough land, and sea). They have also been used to develop different algorithms to measure the coherent and incoherent scattered components depending on the data structure (real-data or complex data). Coherent reflectivity measured from airborne platforms has been compared to other techniques such microwave radiometry, which is highly used in the soil moisture retrieval from spaceborne sensors, and other sensors using optical, multispectral and thermal frequency bands. These relationships between microwave radiometry and GNSS-R measurements suggests the potential synergy of both techniques. A sea ice detection algorithm is also developed using scatterometric GNSS-R data from the UK TDS-1 mission. This algorithm is based on measuring the degree of coherence of the reflected waveform. Finally, a field campaign was conducted to study the effect of vegetation on the GNSS signals that pass through it in order to take into account and correct the effect of vegetation in the GNSS-R data and in the soil moisture retrieval algorithms.Aquesta tesi doctoral aprofundeix en el coneixement de les tècniques de teledetecció passives utilitzant senyals emesos pels satèl·lits de navegació (GNSS) amb l'objectiu de recuperar diferents paràmetres geofísics del terreny. La tesi conté dues parts ben diferenciades a banda de la introducció, estat de l'art i conclusions. La primera part analitza la tècnica coneguda com a patró d'interferències, utilitzada prèviament en una altra tesi doctoral, i proposa certes millores per la seva aplicabilitat. En primer lloc es decideix afegir polarització horitzontal a la ja existent polarització vertical, i s'estudia la recuperació d'humitat del sòl utilitzant només polarització horitzontal i combinant les dues polaritzacions per corregir els efectes de la rugositat del terreny. A continuació es demostra que la mesura de desfasament entre els dos patrons d'interferència està directament relacionada amb la humitat del terreny. Es va realitzar una campanya de mesures a Austràlia per provar empíricament tots els desenvolupaments teòrics i algorismes proposats. En segon lloc s'analitza l'aplicabilitat del patró d'interferències en la mesura de l'altura de les onades (SWH) i del nivell del mar (MSSL), tots dos de forma precisa. L'estimació de l'alçada de les onades és un procés totalment nou basat en mesurar el punt on el patró d'interferències perd la coherència. L'estimació del nivell del mar es basa en l'anàlisi espectral del patró d'interferències provant diferents estimadors espectrals. Atès que la tècnica del patró d'interferència està limitada en cobertura per les seves característiques estàtiques, la investigació duta a terme en aquesta tesi doctoral va migrar cap a tècniques GNSS-R escateromètriques. El principal objectiu a assolir va ser el d'augmentar la cobertura dels diferents instruments GNSS-R de mesura. En conseqüència, la segona part d'aquesta tesi analitza l'aplicabilitat d'aquestes tècniques des de diferents plataformes terrestres (mòbils i fixes), aerotransportades i satèl·lit. Les plataformes terrestres fixes han permès derivar algoritmes de recuperació d'humitat i les mòbils estendre la validació d'aquests. Les plataformes aerotransportades s'han utilitzat per mirar l'estadística del camp elèctric reflectit quan la superfície on es reflecteixen els senyals GNSS va variant (terra plana o terra rugosa, i mar). També han servit per desenvolupar diferents algorismes amb l'objectiu de determinar les components coherent i incoherent del senyal reflectit. De la mateixa manera, dades de reflectivitat coherent mesurades des d'aquestes plataformes han estat comparades amb altres tècniques de teledetecció passiva com la radiometria de microones, altament utilitzada en la mesura d'humitat de terreny, i altres sensors òptics, multi-espectrals, i tèrmics. Aquests resultats han permès suggerir la possible sinergia de dades d'ambdues tecnologies. Un algorisme per detectar la presència de gel sobre el mar també ha estat desenvolupat mitjançant l'ús de dades GNSS-R escateromètriques satel·litals de la missió UK TDS-1. Aquest algorisme es basa en mesurar el grau de coherència de la forma d'ona reflectida. Finalment, s'ha realitzat un estudi de l'efecte de la vegetació en els senyals GNSS que la travessen, per tal de poder corregir aquest efecte en els algoritmes de recuperació d'humitat del terreny

    Deriving vertical total electron content maps from SMOS full polarimetric data to compensate the Faraday rotation effect

    The Faraday rotation is a geophysical effect that causes a rotation of the electromagnetic field components emitted by the Earth when it propagates through the ionosphere. It depends on the vertical total electron content (VTEC) of the ionosphere, the geomagnetic field, and the frequency. For satellite measurements at the L band, this effect is not negligible and must be compensated for. This is the case of the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission, where the measured polarimetric brightness temperature must be corrected from the Faraday rotation effect before the retrieval of the geophysical parameters. The Faraday rotation angle (FRA) can be estimated using a theoretical formulation that makes use of external sources for the VTEC and the geomagnetic field. Alternatively, it can be continuously retrieved from the SMOS full-polarimetric data. However, this is not straightforward due to the relatively poor radiometric sensitivity (thermal noise) and accuracy (spatial bias) of its payload MIRAS (Microwave Interferometer Radiometer by Aperture Synthesis). In this thesis, a methodology for estimating the total electron content of the ionosphere by using an inversion procedure from the measured rotation angle has been developed. These SMOS VTEC maps are derived from SMOS measurements in the Extended Alias-Free Field of View (EAF-FoV) by applying spatio-temporal filtering techniques to mitigate the radiometric errors present in the full-polarimetric measured brightness temperatures. Systematic error patterns found in the Faraday rotation angle retrieval have been characterized along the mission and corrected. The methodology is independent, not only of external databases and forward models, but also of the target that is being measured. Eventually, these SMOS-derived VTEC maps can then be used in the SMOS level 2 processors to improve the geophysical retrievals. The impact of using these SMOS VTEC maps to correct the FRA in the SMOS mission instead of the commonly used VTEC data from GPS has also been assessed, particularly over ocean, where the ionospheric effect is stronger. This assessment has demonstrated improvements in the spatial biases, in the stability of the brightness temperatures (especially in the third Stokes parameter), and in the reduction of the latitudinal gradient present in the third Stokes parameters. All these quality indicators point to a better quality of the geophysical retrievals.La rotación de Faraday es un efecto geofísico que causa un giro en las componentes del campo electromagnético emitido por la Tierra cuando éste se propaga a través de la ionosfera. Ésta depende del contenido vertical total de electrones (VTEC) en la ionosfera, el campo geomagnético y la frecuencia. En las medidas de los satélites que operan en banda L, este efecto no es despreciable y se debe compensar. Este es el caso de la misión SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity), por lo que el efecto de Faraday se tiene que corregir en las medidas polarimétricas captadas por el instrumento antes de obtener parámetros geofísicos. El ángulo de rotación de Faraday (FRA) se puede estimar con una fórmula teórica que usa bases de datos externas para el VTEC y el campo geomagnético. Alternativamente, se puede obtener de una manera continua a partir de los datos polarimétricos de SMOS. Sin embargo, esto no se logra con un cálculo directo debido a la pobre sensibilidad radiométrica (ruido térmico) y a la baja precisión (sesgos espaciales) que presenta el instrumento MIRAS (Microwave Interferometer Radiometer by apertura Synthesis), que se encuentra a bordo del satélite. En esta tesis, se desarrolla una metodología para estimar el VTEC de la ionosfera usando un proceso inverso a partir del ángulo de rotación medido. Estos mapas de VTEC se derivan de medidas en todo el campo de visión extendido en donde no hay aliasing. Para mitigar los errores radiométricos en las temperaturas de brillo polarimétricas, se aplican técnicas de filtrados temporales y espaciales. En el ángulo de rotación de Faraday recuperado se detectaron errores sistemáticos. Estos se caracterizaron a lo largo de la misión y se corrigieron. La metodología es independiente, no solo de bases de datos externas y modelos de océano, sino también de la superficie medida. Estos mapas de VTEC derivados de los datos SMOS se pueden usar en el procesador de nivel 2 para mejorar las recuperaciones geofísicas. Se ha evaluado el impacto de usar estos mapas para corregir el FRA en la misión, en vez de los datos de VTEC que comúnmente se emplean (mapas provenientes de datos de GPS), particularmente sobre océano, en donde los efectos de la ionosfera son más críticos. Esta verificación ha demostrado mejoras en el sesgo espacial, en la estabilidad de las temperaturas de brillo (especialmente en el tercer parámetro de Stokes) y en la reducción del gradiente latitudinal presente en el tercer parámetro de Stokes.     RFI Mitigation for VLBI and Arrays - Water Megamasers in Active Galaxies

    This thesis studies the central parsec in active galaxies via spectral line observations of OH and water megamasers and millimeter-wave interferometry. The aims are four-fold: 1) measure the mass of the supermassive black hole in active galactic nuclei (AGN) through circumnuclear water maser observations, 2) measure the Hubble constant through circumnuclear water maser observations, 3) mitigate the radio frequency interference that degrades spectral line observations, and 4) probe the innermost regions of AGN by expanding a mm-wavelength interferometer. The current paradigm conjectures that AGN contain a supermassive black hole The high spatial resolution of very long baseline radio interferometry (VLBI) allows to track AGN-launched jets over pc to kilo-pc scales outside an AGN. Within AGN, water megamaser emission mapped by VLBI is an excellent tracer of the sub-pc structure, in particular of the accretion disk. Its rotation curve, traced by water masers, allows an accurate SMBH mass measurement, important for constraining the empirical relation between black hole mass and stellar velocity dispersion in the galactic bulge – current evidence suggest that this MBH–sigma -relation is not universal, indicating differences in SMBH feeding, accretion history and AGN evolution. Disk masers further yield accurate distances to nearby maser galaxies by an almost purely geometric means. This allows measuring the current rate of expansion of the Universe, described by the Hubble constant, H0, an important cosmological parameter. To constrain DE models the key goal of the Megamaser Cosmology Project (MCP; Braatz, NRAO) is to measure H0 to at least 3% precision. Relatively few (~5%) active galaxies have been detected in water masers. In this thesis I carried out a water maser survey in nearby galaxies, some with AGN, some also detected in the dissociation product of water, the neutral hydroxyl radical (OH). Four new water masers were detected, including OH-detected galaxies, such as NGC 4261 famous for its dusty torus. The MCP project by J. Braatz et al. conducts 22 GHz VLBI and single-dish observations of disk maser galaxies. I analyzed the data of three quite different maser galaxies with putative AGN (NGC 23, UGC 3193 and IC 2560). The maser data for NGC 23 suggest either an association with a possibly truncated low-luminosity jet, or exceptionally luminous nuclear /extranuclear star formation masers. The AGN disk water masers in UGC 3193 reveal a large accretion disk with two rings suggestive of a disrupted disk around a low central SMBH mass of about 0.6+-0.2 x 10^6 Msun The disk masers in IC 2560 on the other hand indicate a SMBH mass of 5.4^+0.9_-0.6 x 10^6 Msun, and undermassive in the common MBH-sigma -relation, consistent the trend seen in other water maser galaxies. The IC 2560 disk masers also allowed the Hubble constant to be measured, resulting in an H0 of 67.7^+11.6_-8:9 km/s/Mpc. Combined with recent MCP results (UGC 3789, NGC 6264) this yields a new maser-based Hubble constant of 68.4+-5.3 km/s/Mpc (8%). Spectral lines observations are often degraded by man-made radio frequency interference (RFI). Thus I also discuss two techniques for mitigating RFI. The first was implemented in a popular VLBI software correlator. I evaluate the theoretical and practical performance, also in a VLBI search for 1.6 GHz OH in tori of Cygnus A and NGC 1068. I find the mitigation method to be effective but limited in practice due to the particular software correlator architecture. The second method improves over two existing approaches for antenna arrays, including focal plane arrays. While current instrumentation did not allow an immediate application, e.g., in the maser survey, I find that the method shows great potential for future observations in presence of RFI. Lastly, our recent work on expanding a global sub-millimeter VLBI array has enabled extreme angular resolution, suffcient to resolve the SMBH/disk system and the jet launching region. I present the first 230 GHz VLBI observation of the core region of blazar 3C 279. The work allows extreme-resolution observations of, e.g., Sgr A* and the SMBHs in M87 that will lead to a better understanding of SMBH spin, accretion, and jet launching

    SETI science working group report

    This report covers the initial activities and deliberations of a continuing working group asked to assist the SETI Program Office at NASA. Seven chapters present the group's consensus on objectives, strategies, and plans for instrumental R&D and for a microwave search for extraterrestrial in intelligence (SETI) projected for the end of this decade. Thirteen appendixes reflect the views of their individual authors. Included are discussions of the 8-million-channel spectrum analyzer architecture and the proof-of-concept device under development; signal detection, recognition, and identification on-line in the presence of noise and radio interference; the 1-10 GHz sky survey and the 1-3 GHz targeted search envisaged; and the mutual interests of SETI and radio astronomy. The report ends with a selective, annotated SETI reading list of pro and contra SETI publications

    The design of a two-element radio interferometer using satellite TV equipment

    This research presents the design of a two-element radio interferometer capable of performing complex correlation. With the development of sophisticated radio astronomy instruments, particularly in South Africa, there is a need to develop an affordable educational instrument which can be used to demonstrate the fundamental concepts of radio interferometry to university students. The mass production of satellite TV equipment has resulted in relatively sensitive radio frequency (RF) equipment such as parabolic reflector dishes and low-noise block down-converters (LNBs) being available at significantly reduced costs. This served as the front-end of the interferometer which was used to observe the sun between 10.70 GHz - 12.75 GHz (RF). The LNB then down-converted these to an intermediate frequency (IF) between 0.95 GHz - 2.15 GHz. The LNBs were modified to make use of a common 25 MHz reference, which ensured that the observed fringes were only as a result of the source's geometric time delay. A power detector was also designed since the adding interferometer architecture was chosen. This power detector included the Analog Devices LT 5534 power detector integrated circuit (IC) and a Teensy 3.6 microcontroller. The calibrated power detector could detect signals as weak as - 60 dBm and showed less than 21 mV error in output for input signals in the range [- 50 dBm, -30 dBm]. The modified LNBs experienced issues, in particular the presence of a spurious LO signal, which distorted initial observations of the sun. This was resolved by the design and manufacture of narrowband hairpin filters and quarterwavelength stub filters which were used to isolate the IF band between 1.05 GHz - 1.15 GHz (corresponding RF between 10.80 GHz - 10.90 GHz). This also improved the interferometer's resolution. A series of filter-integrated Wilkinson power dividers and branchline couplers were designed to filter and further separate signals into in-phase and quadrature-phase (I-Q) components - these were required for complex correlation. The integrated quarter-wavelength stub filter and Wilkinson power divider achieved a maximum amplitude imbalance of 0.13 dB and phase imbalance of 0.9â—¦ between output ports. The integrated quarter-wavelength stub filter and branchline coupler achieved a maximum amplitude imbalance of 0.13 dB and phase imbalance of 91.1â—¦ between output ports. These results closely agreed with the simulated performance. First light was observed on the 5th December 2020 when the sun was successfully detected using the coherent two-element interferometer along a 1.1 m baseline. Other tests included using the observed fringe phase to verify the physical baseline. A theoretical baseline of 1.11 m was calculated for a physical baseline of 1.3 m indicating an error of less than 0.2 m. The sun's fringe frequency and amplitude was also observed for varying baselines - the sun was resolved along a 3 m baseline. Finally, full-system observations of the sun were conducted. These included observing the sun's cosine and sine fringes, which indicated that the analogue complex correlator was operating correctly. Thus, the primary goal of this project had been fulfilled.     Elevation and Deformation Extraction from TomoSAR

    3D SAR tomography (TomoSAR) and 4D SAR differential tomography (Diff-TomoSAR) exploit multi-baseline SAR data stacks to provide an essential innovation of SAR Interferometry for many applications, sensing complex scenes with multiple scatterers mapped into the same SAR pixel cell. However, these are still influenced by DEM uncertainty, temporal decorrelation, orbital, tropospheric and ionospheric phase distortion and height blurring. In this thesis, these techniques are explored. As part of this exploration, the systematic procedures for DEM generation, DEM quality assessment, DEM quality improvement and DEM applications are first studied. Besides, this thesis focuses on the whole cycle of systematic methods for 3D & 4D TomoSAR imaging for height and deformation retrieval, from the problem formation phase, through the development of methods to testing on real SAR data. After DEM generation introduction from spaceborne bistatic InSAR (TanDEM-X) and airborne photogrammetry (Bluesky), a new DEM co-registration method with line feature validation (river network line, ridgeline, valley line, crater boundary feature and so on) is developed and demonstrated to assist the study of a wide area DEM data quality. This DEM co-registration method aligns two DEMs irrespective of the linear distortion model, which improves the quality of DEM vertical comparison accuracy significantly and is suitable and helpful for DEM quality assessment. A systematic TomoSAR algorithm and method have been established, tested, analysed and demonstrated for various applications (urban buildings, bridges, dams) to achieve better 3D & 4D tomographic SAR imaging results. These include applying Cosmo-Skymed X band single-polarisation data over the Zipingpu dam, Dujiangyan, Sichuan, China, to map topography; and using ALOS L band data in the San Francisco Bay region to map urban building and bridge. A new ionospheric correction method based on the tile method employing IGS TEC data, a split-spectrum and an ionospheric model via least squares are developed to correct ionospheric distortion to improve the accuracy of 3D & 4D tomographic SAR imaging. Meanwhile, a pixel by pixel orbit baseline estimation method is developed to address the research gaps of baseline estimation for 3D & 4D spaceborne SAR tomography imaging. Moreover, a SAR tomography imaging algorithm and a differential tomography four-dimensional SAR imaging algorithm based on compressive sensing, SAR interferometry phase (InSAR) calibration reference to DEM with DEM error correction, a new phase error calibration and compensation algorithm, based on PS, SVD, PGA, weighted least squares and minimum entropy, are developed to obtain accurate 3D & 4D tomographic SAR imaging results. The new baseline estimation method and consequent TomoSAR processing results showed that an accurate baseline estimation is essential to build up the TomoSAR model. After baseline estimation, phase calibration experiments (via FFT and Capon method) indicate that a phase calibration step is indispensable for TomoSAR imaging, which eventually influences the inversion results. A super-resolution reconstruction CS based study demonstrates X band data with the CS method does not fit for forest reconstruction but works for reconstruction of large civil engineering structures such as dams and urban buildings. Meanwhile, the L band data with FFT, Capon and the CS method are shown to work for the reconstruction of large manmade structures (such as bridges) and urban buildings
