Pre-Reduction Graph Products: Hardnesses of Properly Learning DFAs and Approximating EDP on DAGs
The study of graph products is a major research topic and typically concerns
the term , e.g., to show that . In this paper, we
study graph products in a non-standard form where is a
"reduction", a transformation of any graph into an instance of an intended
optimization problem. We resolve some open problems as applications.
(1) A tight -approximation hardness for the minimum
consistent deterministic finite automaton (DFA) problem, where is the
sample size. Due to Board and Pitt [Theoretical Computer Science 1992], this
implies the hardness of properly learning DFAs assuming (the
weakest possible assumption).
(2) A tight hardness for the edge-disjoint paths (EDP)
problem on directed acyclic graphs (DAGs), where denotes the number of
vertices.
(3) A tight hardness of packing vertex-disjoint -cycles for large .
(4) An alternative (and perhaps simpler) proof for the hardness of properly
learning DNF, CNF and intersection of halfspaces [Alekhnovich et al., FOCS 2004
and J. Comput.Syst.Sci. 2008]
On Polynomial Kernels for Integer Linear Programs: Covering, Packing and Feasibility
We study the existence of polynomial kernels for the problem of deciding
feasibility of integer linear programs (ILPs), and for finding good solutions
for covering and packing ILPs. Our main results are as follows: First, we show
that the ILP Feasibility problem admits no polynomial kernelization when
parameterized by both the number of variables and the number of constraints,
unless NP \subseteq coNP/poly. This extends to the restricted cases of bounded
variable degree and bounded number of variables per constraint, and to covering
and packing ILPs. Second, we give a polynomial kernelization for the Cover ILP
problem, asking for a solution to Ax >= b with c^Tx <= k, parameterized by k,
when A is row-sparse; this generalizes a known polynomial kernelization for the
special case with 0/1-variables and coefficients (d-Hitting Set)
Geometry of Frictionless and Frictional Sphere Packings
We study static packings of frictionless and frictional spheres in three
dimensions, obtained via molecular dynamics simulations, in which we vary
particle hardness, friction coefficient, and coefficient of restitution.
Although frictionless packings of hard-spheres are always isostatic (with six
contacts) regardless of construction history and restitution coefficient,
frictional packings achieve a multitude of hyperstatic packings that depend on
system parameters and construction history. Instead of immediately dropping to
four, the coordination number reduces smoothly from as the friction

Packing a Knapsack of Unknown Capacity
We study the problem of packing a knapsack without knowing its capacity.
Whenever we attempt to pack an item that does not fit, the item is discarded;
if the item fits, we have to include it in the packing. We show that there is
always a policy that packs a value within factor 2 of the optimum packing,
irrespective of the actual capacity. If all items have unit density, we achieve
a factor equal to the golden ratio. Both factors are shown to be best possible.
In fact, we obtain the above factors using packing policies that are universal
in the sense that they fix a particular order of the items and try to pack the
items in this order, independent of the observations made while packing. We
give efficient algorithms computing these policies. On the other hand, we show
that, for any alpha>1, the problem of deciding whether a given universal policy
achieves a factor of alpha is coNP-complete. If alpha is part of the input, the
same problem is shown to be coNP-complete for items with unit densities.
Finally, we show that it is coNP-hard to decide, for given alpha, whether a set
of items admits a universal policy with factor alpha, even if all items have
unit densities
New Approximability Results for the Robust k-Median Problem
We consider a robust variant of the classical -median problem, introduced
by Anthony et al. \cite{AnthonyGGN10}. In the \emph{Robust -Median problem},
we are given an -vertex metric space and client sets . The objective is to open a set of
facilities such that the worst case connection cost over all client sets is
minimized; in other words, minimize . Anthony
et al.\ showed an approximation algorithm for any metric and
APX-hardness even in the case of uniform metric. In this paper, we show that
their algorithm is nearly tight by providing
approximation hardness, unless . This hardness result holds even for uniform and line
metrics. To our knowledge, this is one of the rare cases in which a problem on
a line metric is hard to approximate to within logarithmic factor. We
complement the hardness result by an experimental evaluation of different
heuristics that shows that very simple heuristics achieve good approximations
for realistic classes of instances.Comment: 19 page
