    Robust fuzzy PSS design using ABC

    This paper presents an Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithm to tune optimal rule-base of a Fuzzy Power System Stabilizer (FPSS) which leads to damp low frequency oscillation following disturbances in power systems. Thus, extraction of an appropriate set of rules or selection of an optimal set of rules from the set of possible rules is an important and essential step toward the design of any successful fuzzy logic controller. Consequently, in this paper, an ABC based rule generation method is proposed for automated fuzzy PSS design to improve power system stability and reduce the design effort. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated on a 3-machine 9-bus standard power system in comparison with the Genetic Algorithm based tuned FPSS under different loading condition through ITAE performance indices

    Designing and tuning a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller appears to be conceptually intuitive, but can be hard in practice, if multiple (and often conflicting) objectives such as short transient and high stability are to be achieved. Usually, initial designs obtained by all means need to be adjusted repeatedly through computer simulations until the closed-loop system performs or compromises as desired. This stimulates the development of "intelligent" tools that can assist engineers to achieve the best overall PID control for the entire operating envelope. This development has further led to the incorporation of some advanced tuning algorithms into PID hardware modules. Corresponding to these developments, this paper presents a modern overview of functionalities and tuning methods in patents, software packages and commercial hardware modules. It is seen that many PID variants have been developed in order to improve transient performance, but standardising and modularising PID control are desired, although challenging. The inclusion of system identification and "intelligent" techniques in software based PID systems helps automate the entire design and tuning process to a useful degree. This should also assist future development of "plug-and-play" PID controllers that are widely applicable and can be set up easily and operate optimally for enhanced productivity, improved quality and reduced maintenance requirements

    A shape memory alloy adaptive tuned vibration absorber: design and implementation

    In this paper a tuned vibration absorber (TVA) is realized using shape memory alloy (SMA) elements. The elastic modulus of SMA changes with temperature and this effect is exploited to develop a continuously tunable device.A TVA with beam elements is described, a simple two-degree-of-freedom model developed and the TVA characterized experimentally. The behaviour during continuous heating and cooling is examined and the TVA is seen to be continuously tunable. A change in the tuned frequency of 21.4% is observed between the cold, martensite, and hot, austenite, states. This corresponds to a change in the elastic modulus of about 47.5%, somewhat less than expected.The response time of the SMA TVA is long because of its thermal inertia. However, it is mechanically simple and has a reasonably good performance, despite the tuning parameters depending on the current in a strongly nonlinear way

    The application of a new PID autotuning method for the steam/water loop in large scale ships

    In large scale ships, the most used controllers for the steam/water loop are still the proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers. However, the tuning rules for the PID parameters are based on empirical knowledge and the performance for the loops is not satisfying. In order to improve the control performance of the steam/water loop, the application of a recently developed PID autotuning method is studied. Firstly, a 'forbidden region' on the Nyquist plane can be obtained based on user-defined performance requirements such as robustness or gain margin and phase margin. Secondly, the dynamic of the system can be obtained with a sine test around the operation point. Finally, the PID controller's parameters can be obtained by locating the frequency response of the controlled system at the edge of the 'forbidden region'. To verify the effectiveness of the new PID autotuning method, comparisons are presented with other PID autotuning methods, as well as the model predictive control. The results show the superiority of the new PID autotuning method

    PSO based Hybrid PID-FLC Sugeno Control for Excitation System of Large Synchronous Motor

    This paper proposes a hybrid control system integrating a PID controller and a fuzzy logic controller, using the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm to optimize control parameters. The control object is an excitation system for a large synchronous motor, which is widely used in large power transmission systems. In practice, the change in load and excitation source can affect the operating mode of the motor. Therefore, a hybrid controller is designed to stabilize the power factor, resulting in better working performance. In the control algorithm, a PID controller is initially designed using PSO to optimize the control coefficients. The FLC-Sugeno control is then integrated with the PID, in which PSO is utilized to optimize membership functions.     Design of a denoising hybrid fuzzy-pid controller for active suspension systems of heavy vehicles based on model adaptive wheelbase preview strategy

    Active suspension is an effective approach to improve vehicle performance, and it is of great importance to attenuate the vibration of the rear part of heavy vehicles with freight. This paper proposes a new hybrid fuzzy proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller with model adaptive wheelbase preview and wavelet denoising filter in an active suspension system for heavy vehicles with freight. A half vehicle model is first built, followed with the construction of the road excitation profiles of the shock and vibration pavement. After the design and implementation of the control method, four performance indices of the vehicle are evaluated. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, the control performance of the integrated controller and the separate function of every single controller are evaluated respectively. Numerical results show that the integrated control algorithm is superior to the single controllers and is effective in improving the vehicle performance as compared with other methods. Moreover, the wavelet denoising filter is shown to be an effective way to improve the vehicle performance and enable the stability of the system against noise
