    The emergence of compositional structures in perceptually grounded language games

    AbstractThis paper describes a new model on the evolution and induction of compositional structures in the language of a population of (simulated) robotic agents. The model is based on recent work in language evolution modelling, including the iterated learning model, the language game model and the Talking Heads experiment. It further adopts techniques recently developed in the field of grammar induction. The paper reports on a number of different experiments done with this new model and shows certain conditions under which compositional structures can emerge. The paper confirms previous findings that a transmission bottleneck serves as a pressure mechanism for the emergence of compositionality, and that a communication strategy for guessing the references of utterances aids in the development of qualitatively ‘good’ languages. In addition, the results show that the emerging languages reflect the structure of the world to a large extent and that the development of a semantics, together with a competitive selection mechanism, produces a faster emergence of compositionality than a predefined semantics without such a selection mechanism

    Synthetic modeling of cultural language evolution

    Trabajo presentado al EvolangIX Workshop: "Five Approaches to Language Evolution" celebrado en Kyoto (JapĂłn) el 13 de marzo de 2012.Recently cultural theories of language evolution have gained significant momentum in explaining natural language. This paper reviews agent-based modeling, one of the key methodologies which is in part responsible for these developments. We discuss the most important challenges for a theory of cultural language evolution and the resulting dominant experimental paradigm. The discussion is framed along examples of experiments conducted within the methodology.     Developmental Stages of Perception and Language Acquisition in a Perceptually Grounded Robot

    The objective of this research is to develop a system for language learning based on a minimum of pre-wired language-specific functionality, that is compatible with observations of perceptual and language capabilities in the human developmental trajectory. In the proposed system, meaning (in terms of descriptions of events and spatial relations) is extracted from video images based on detection of position, motion, physical contact and their parameters. Mapping of sentence form to meaning is performed by learning grammatical constructions that are retrieved from a construction inventory based on the constellation of closed class items uniquely identifying the target sentence structure. The resulting system displays robust acquisition behavior that reproduces certain observations from developmental studies, with very modest “innate” language specificity

    Re-conceptualising the Language Game Paradigm in the Framework of Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning

    In this paper, we formulate the challenge of re-conceptualising the language game experimental paradigm in the framework of multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL). If successful, future language game experiments will benefit from the rapid and promising methodological advances in the MARL community, while future MARL experiments on learning emergent communication will benefit from the insights and results gained from language game experiments. This in turn will benefit the design of cognitive robots capable of learning to handle and manipulate objects and tools autonomously, to cooperate and communicate with other robots and humans, and to adapt their abilities to changing internal, environmental, and social conditions. Four key areas of research challenges are discussed, specifically for the issues related to the understanding of: 1) how agents learn and represent compositional actions; 2) how agents learn and represent compositional lexica; 3) the dynamics of social interaction and learning; and 4) how compositional action and language representations are integrated to bootstrap the cognitive system. The review of specific issues and progress in these areas is then translated into a practical roadmap based on a series of milestones. These milestones provide a possible set of cognitive robotics goals and test scenarios, thus acting as a research roadmap for future work on cognitive developmental robotics.Peer reviewe

    This article discusses the current progress and solutions to the symbol grounding problem and specifically identifies which aspects of the problem have been addressed and issues and scientific challenges that still require investigation. In particular, the paper suggests that of the various aspects of the symbol grounding problem, the transition from indexical representations to symbol-symbol relationships requires the most research. This analysis initiated a debate and solicited commentaries from experts in the field to gather consensus on progress and achievements and identify the challenges still open in the symbol grounding problem
