    People interact with the processes and products of contemporary technology. Individuals are affected by these in various ways and individuals shape them. Such interactions come under the label 'human factors'. To expand the understanding of those to whom the term is relatively unfamiliar, its domain includes both an applied science and applications of knowledge. It means both research and development, with implications of research both for basic science and for development. It encompasses not only design and testing but also training and personnel requirements, even though some unwisely try to split these apart both by name and institutionally. The territory includes more than performance at work, though concentration on that aspect, epitomized in the derivation of the term ergonomics, has overshadowed human factors interest in interactions between technology and the home, health, safety, consumers, children and later life, the handicapped, sports and recreation education, and travel. Two aspects of technology considered most significant for work performance, systems and automation, and several approaches to these, are discussed

    It is estimated that there are 43 million Americans with disabilities, many of whom are significantly unemployed or underemployed compared with their nondisabled peers. This article describes the role of employers, management, and especially the HR professional in minimizing disability discrimination. It describes the findings of a recent study of private and federal sector employers’ responses to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Rehabilitation Act, and other disability nondiscrimination legislation, and points to areas that this research indicates are ways to successfully maximize the integration of people with disabilities into the workplace

    Activity Theory Analysis of Heart Failure Self-Care

    The management of chronic health conditions such as heart failure is a complex process emerging from the activity of a network of individuals and artifacts. This article presents an Activity Theory-based secondary analysis of data from a geriatric heart failure management study. Twenty-one patients' interviews and clinic visit observations were analyzed to uncover eight configurations of roles and activities involving patients, clinicians, and others in the sociotechnical network. For each configuration or activity pattern, we identify points of tension and propose guidelines for developing interventions for future computer-supported healthcare systems

    Identification and Legal Advocacy for Trafficking Survivors

    The NY Anti-Trafficking Network is a coalition of diverse legal and social service providers in New York State and surrounding regions dedicated to ending human trafficking and coordinating resources to provide services to trafficked persons. The Network's Legal Subcommittee advocates on policy issues, advises on technical legal issues, and works toward educating the attorneys on the problem of human trafficking in its many manifestations. The Legal Subcommittee drafted this manual to provide guidance to lawyers on issues that arise in the context of representing trafficking survivors. The manual is designed for practitioners who are familiar with basic legal terms and concepts, to offer some insight into the process. It is not meant to be an exhaustive source of the law.This manual is focused on the T visa, which was established by the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 (TVPA) and put into effect by immigration regulations published in January 2002. The T visa provides immigration relief to foreign nationals trafficked into the United States. If favorably adjudicated, it grants the survivor permission to remain within the U.S. and to obtain employment authorization for three years. At the end of the three years, or when the investigation is complete, the survivor is eligible to petition for permanent residency. This manual discusses the background of the T visa, suggests points to consider in evaluating a client's eligibility for the T visa, evaluates the statute and the regulations, and offers step-by-step instruction on preparing a T application for consideration by the U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Service

    The arrival of powerful information technologies in the traditional humanistic disciplines has done far more than simply add to the tools available for research and instruction. Those who have embraced these technologies have also experienced a significant disruption of their traditional roles within the academy, producing confusion and disorientation as well as excitement and innovation. Some of the reasons for this confusion are discussed, and one example of two "restabilized" roles for humanities faculty the work of the Advanced Information Technologies Group at the University of Illinois is described.     Organizational Strategies for the Adoption of Electronic Medical Records: Toward an Understanding of Outcome Variation in Nursing Homes

    [Excerpt] An important element in president-elect Obama\u27s economic stimulus proposal is his plan to invest a significant proportion of federal dollars in installing electronic medical records (EMR) in U.S. healthcare institutions. In emphasizing the need for EMR, Obama is following the advice of numerous healthcare experts who have pointed out that the healthcare sector lags behind other industries in the use of computer technology. They believe the widespread use of EMR would help reduce medical errors, control the costs of healthcare, and lead to significant improvements in the quality of care Americans receive. In this paper we present preliminary results of an ongoing study of the introduction of EMR in 20 nursing homes in the New York City area. Although most observers believe EMR holds great promise for the improvement of healthcare, in fact recent studies have found mixed evidence regarding the effect of EMR on patient outcomes. The evidence we have gathered to date suggests that whether EMR has beneficial effects on the costs and quality of healthcare depends very much on the purposes and objectives nursing home managers and administrators intend to achieve through its use. That is, management strategy and style, we believe, strongly influences healthcare outcomes associated with technological innovation
