    Content, Interaction and Media Portrayal of Violence against African Americans in Mainstream and Citizen Journalism

    This content analysis centers on a comparison of reporting content between mainstream print media and citizen journalism, pertaining to high-publicity deaths of African American individuals caused by police officers. The deaths focused upon in this paper include Eric Garner in Staten Island, New York; Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri; Tamir Rice in Cleveland, Ohio; and Freddie Gray in Baltimore, Maryland. For the purposes of this paper, the mainstream print outlets examined are The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and USA Today. Advanced Twitter searches using the Topsy search engine have been utilized to document citizen journalism reports. Through constructed week sampling and the examination of 51 articles and 1302 tweets, it was found that mainstream media generally reports on incidents before citizen journalists, and that the interaction between citizen journalists using Twitter and the mainstream media is extremely sparse

News coverage of judicial proceedings at all levels, nationwide, may well have peaked – in quantity, quality and reach – in the early 1990s, when a declining economy kicked off dramatic cutbacks in newspaper news staffing, reductions later amplified by the drop in the news media’s own financial models

    Protecting Oak Flat: Narratives Of Survivance As Observed Through Digital Activism

    abstract: American Indians are increasingly using social media/social network platforms as a tool to influence policy through social change. The activist group Apache Stronghold represents a case of American Indians utilising social media tools to protect Oak Flat and influence federal Indian policy. Oak Flat is sacred Apache land located in Superior, Arizona. United States legislators transferred Oak Flat to the mining company Resolution Copper as part of the omnibus National Defense Authorization Act of 2015. Qualitative analysis of social media content and advocacy tactics – specifically through use of timeline and digital ethnography – of Apache Stronghold from 2015-2016 reveal the interrelated nature of on-the-ground efforts, online efforts, solidarity efforts, and legislative support efforts.     Online Stakeholder Interactions in the Early Stage of a Megaproject

    The purpose of this paper is to examine the network structure of online stakeholder discussions in the planning stage of a UK public mega project, High Speed Rail. By providing new rail connections between London, Birmingham and Manchester, this project is highly complex as it is embedded in a network of stakeholder relationships that may support or oppose the project. Data drawn from Twitter was analyzed using Social Network Analysis and inductive analysis of user profiles and content. Findings indicate that the majority of online stakeholders oppose the project and form stable clusters. Larger clusters within this network may attempt to deploy power directly in the form of a manipulation strategy while smaller clusters may seek to ally themselves with more powerful groups, a pathway strategy. Overall, the methodology is a useful complement to existing methods and may provide real time insights into the complex, evolving discussions around mega projects

    Political agenda setting in the hybrid media system: why legacy media still matter a great deal

    This article examines the roles of the media in the process of political agenda setting. There is a long tradition of studies on this topic, but they have mostly focused on legacy news media, thus overlooking the role of other actors and the complex hybrid dynamics that characterise contemporary political communication. In contrast, through an in-depth case study using mixed methods and multi- platform data, this article provides a detailed analysis of the roles and interactions between different types of media and how they were used by political and advocacy elites. It explores what happened in the different parts of the system, and thus the paths to attention that led to setting this issue in the political and media agendas. The analysis of the case, a partial policy reversal in the UK provoked by an immigration scandal known as the ‘Windrush scandal’, reveals that the issue was pushed into the agenda by a campaign assemblage of investigative journalism, political and advocacy elites, and digitally-enabled leaders. The legacy news media came late but were crucial. They greatly amplified the salience of the issue and, once in ‘storm mode’, they were key for sustaining attention and pressure, eventually compelling the government to respond. It shows that they often remain at the core of the ‘national conversation’ and certainly in the eye of a media storm. In the contemporary context, characterised by fierce battles for attention, shortening attention spans and fractured audiences, this is key and has important implications for agenda setting and beyond

    How Millennials Engage in Social Media Activism: A Uses and Gratifications Approach

    Millennials are the world\u27s digital natives and its largest generation. A general perception of this generation is that they lack engagement in social-political issues. This study explores how Millennials are engaging in social media activism and whether online activism is driving offline activism behaviors. A quantitative survey of 306 participants was conducted to learn more about the gratifications Millennials obtain through social media and whether associations exist between their online and offline activism behaviors. The results showed that Millennials engage in online activism behaviors to a greater extent than offline activism behaviors. Millennials primarily gratify intrinsic needs for interaction and belonging by engaging in social media activism behaviors. So-called “slacktivism” behaviors were most common among Millennials engaging in online activism. Similarly, online activism behaviors that require greater investment from Millennials were a good predictor of activism behaviors that occur offline. Results also demonstrate that, at an individual identification level, Millennials self-perceptions as activists predicted engagement in both online and offline activism

    The battle for ‘Trayvon Martin’: Mapping a media controversy online and off-line

    One of the biggest news stories of 2012, the killing of Trayvon Martin, nearly disappeared from public view, initially receiving only cursory local news coverage. But the story gained attention and controversy over Martin’s death dominated headlines, airwaves, and Twitter for months, thanks to a savvy publicist working on behalf of the victim’s parents and a series of campaigns offline and online. Using the theories of networked gatekeeping and networked framing, we map out the vast media ecosystem using quantitative data about the content generated around the Trayvon Martin story in both offline and online media, as well as measures of engagement with the story, to trace the interrelations among mainstream media, nonprofessional and social media, and their audiences. We consider the attention and link economies among the collected media sources in order to understand who was influential when, finding that broadcast media is still important as an amplifier and gatekeeper, but that it is susceptible to media activists working through participatory or nonprofessional media to co-create the news and influence the framing of major controversies. Our findings have implications for social change organizations that seek to harness advocacy campaigns to news stories, and for scholars studying media ecology and the networked public sphere
