    Use of Mobile Devices to Access Resources Among Health Professions Students: A Systematic Review

    This systematic review examines types of mobile devices used by health professions students, kinds of resources and tools accessed via mobile devices, and reasons for using the devices to access the resources and tools. The review included 20 studies selected from articles published in English between January 2010 and April 2015, retrieved from PubMed and other sources. Data extracted included participants, study designs, mobile devices used, mobile resources/apps accessed, outcome measures, and advantages of and barriers to using mobile devices. The review indicates significant variability across the studies in terms of research methods, types of mobile programs implemented, resources accessed, and outcomes. There were beneficial effects of using mobile devices to access resources as well as conspicuous challenges or barriers in using mobile devices

    Use of Smartphones in Hospitals

    Mobile technology has begun to change the landscape of the medical profession with more than two-thirds of physicians regularly using smart phones. Smartphones have allowed healthcare professionals and the general public to communicate more efficiently, collect data and facilitate the clinical decision making. The methodology for this study was a qualitative literature review following a systematic approach of the smartphone usage among physicians in hospitals. Fifty-one articles were selected for this study based on inclusion criteria. The findings were classified and described into seven categories: use of smartphone in obstetrics, pediatrics, surgery, internal medicine, radiology, and dermatology which were chosen based on the documented use of smartphone application in different healthcare practices. A last section of patient safety and issues with confidentiality is also described. This study suggest that smartphones have been playing an increasingly important role in healthcare. Medical professionals have become more dependent upon medical smartphone applications. However, concerns of patient safety and confidentiality will likely lead to increased oversight of mobile device use by regulatory agencies and accrediting bodies

    A Research on the Classification and Applicability of the Mobile Health Applications

    Mobile health applications are applied for different purposes. Healthcare professionals and other users can use this type of mobile applications for specific tasks, such as diagnosis, information, prevention, treatment, and communication. This paper presents an analysis of mobile health applications used by healthcare professionals and their patients. A secondary objective of this article is to evaluate the scientific validation of these mobile health applications and to verify if the results provided by these applications have an underlying sound scientific foundation. This study also analyzed literature references and the use of mobile health applications available in online application stores. In general, a large part of these mobile health applications provides information about scientific validation. However, some mobile health applications are not validated.     Pre COVID-19 usage of smartphones and medical applications among medical students

    Background: To determine awareness of medical students that utilize smartphone and their familiarity of medical applications.Methods: The questionnaire-based descriptive study was conducted in December 2019 and comprised medical students of first year and second year of the CMH Kharian Medical College, Kharian, and Nawaz Sharif Medical College, Gujrat, Gujranwala Medical College, Gujranwala and Mohi-ud-Din Islamic Medical College, Mirpur. Questionnaires were distributed in the classrooms and were filled by the students anonymously. SPSS 20 was used for statistical analysis.Results: Among the 770 medical students in the study, 747 (97%) had smartphones and 23 (3%) were using simple cell phones. Overall, 362 (47%) of the smart phone users were using some medical apps. Besides, 223 (29%) were aware of the medical apps but were not using them. Also, 655 (85%) students were not using any type of medical text eBooks through their phone, and only 115 (15%) had relevant text eBooks in their phones.Conclusions: A very low awareness among medical college students exists regarding smartphones as a gadget for improving medical knowledge

    Testing Tablet Computers in Nursing Education: A Comprehensive Evaluation Framework

    Background: Tablet Computers (TCs) and other mobile digital devices are rapidly changing the way we communicate and access information in our personal and professional lives. Scarce research exists regarding their effectiveness in promoting the learning of health professionals. This paper describes the evaluation framework used in a study to test TCs in a post-diploma baccalaureate nursing program in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) state of Qatar.Purpose: The evaluation framework was structured around 10 objectives designed to assess the impact of TC integration into the evidence-based practice (EBP) and reflective practice (RP) components of a scholarship course. Evaluation variables included perceptions of knowledge, confidence, comfort, satisfaction and technical skill before and after the 7-week TC implementation; students’ usage patterns and attitudes about the usefulness of TCs in promoting their learning related to EBP and RP were also examined; in addition, students’ views about the impact of TCs on the learning environment and their engagement in the learning process were sought.Methods: A mixed method descriptive design was used to assess outcomes of interest. Qualitative methods (focus groups, participant observation, field notes and reflective journals) were used to capture subjective perspectives of TC users. Quantitative methods (pre-test/posttest, activity logs and skills labs) were used to assess change in knowledge, attitude and technical proficiency over time.Results: The evaluation framework used to assess process and outcome variables in this study combined structural, philosophical, theoretical, pedagogical and methodological elements. These included the logic model, participatory action, theory-based course concepts, as well as a learning taxonomy involving cognitive, affective and psychomotor competencies.Conclusion: The value of a comprehensive evaluation plan executed in tandem with TC implementation is highlighted

    Managing Social Media for Making Cancer Hospitals’ Brands More Human: A Proposal Model based on a Literature Review

    Managing social media constitutes a challenge for cancer hospitals: internal processes, quality information, and the role of employees. These organizations resort to social media to enhance their relations with stakeholders and promote their brands at the same time. This paper analyzes how cancer hospitals could use social media to associate their brands with human values (patients’ rights, honesty, integrity, kindness, compassion), and become more credible institutions. To do that, we conducted a literature review on cancer hospitals’ communication initiatives on social media: we considered three databases, four keywords, and six inclusion/exclusion criteria to gather papers published on this topic between 2011 and 2020. We identified 114 papers. Based on that, we developed the PET Branding Model, an online communication model that these hospitals can implement to associate their brands with human values. We concluded that cancer hospitals need to implement a Social Media Unit that employs people from different professional backgrounds and work according to protocols; prioritize a public health approach focused on satisfying stakeholders’ needs in terms of information; and train the hospital’s employees on how to use social media professionally

    Wearable technologies to measure clinical outcomes in multiple sclerosis: A scoping review

    Wearable technology refers to any sensor worn on the person, making continuous and remote monitoring available to many people with chronic disease, including multiple sclerosis (MS). Daily monitoring seems an ideal solution either as an outcome measure or as an adjunct to support rater-based monitoring in both clinical and research settings. There has been an increase in solutions that are available, yet there is little consensus on the most appropriate solution to use in either MS research or clinical practice. We completed a scoping review (using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines) to summarise the wearable solutions available in MS, to identify those approaches that could potentially be utilised in clinical trials, by evaluating the following: scalability, cost, patient adaptability and accuracy. We identified 35 unique products that measure gait, cognition, upper limb function, activity, mood and fatigue, with most of these solutions being phone applications
