    Smart grid interoperability use cases for extending electricity storage modeling within the IEC Common Information Model

    Copyright @ 2012 IEEEThe IEC Common Information Model (CIM) is recognized as a core standard, supporting electricity transmission system interoperability. Packages of UML classes make up its domain ontology to enable a standardised abstraction of network topology and proprietary power system models. Since the early days of its design, the CIM has grown to reflect the widening scope and detail of utility information use cases as the desire to interoperate between a greater number of systems has increased. The cyber-physical nature of the smart grid places even greater demand upon the CIM to model future scenarios for power system operation and management that are starting to arise. Recent developments of modern electricity networks have begun to implement electricity storage (ES) technologies to provide ancillary balancing services, useful to grid integration of large-scale renewable energy systems. In response to this we investigate modeling of grid-scale electricity storage, by drawing on information use cases for future smart grid operational scenarios at National Grid, the GB Transmission System Operator. We find current structures within the CIM do not accommodate the informational requirements associated with novel ES systems and propose extensions to address this requirement.This study is supported by the UK National Grid and Brunel Universit

    Consigned to the shadows of telecommunications, optical sensing has often taken a back seat in a young person's mind when considering the importance of photonics, or optics, to the advancement of the society and of knowledge. Here, I touch on briefly how broad optical sensing and sensing generally has become and how and why it is becoming the catalyst for the convergence of many technologies and in the process raising significant philosophical questions about the transformation of our society and indeed ourselves. In doing so I touch on many of the complexities in real life that influence the breakthroughs we see today, including a healthy speculation and critique on our society and an awareness of the motivations to improve it that drive many of them. © The Author(s) 2012

    A scalable line-independent design algorithm for voltage and frequency control in AC islanded microgrids

    We propose a decentralized control synthesis procedure for stabilizing voltage and frequency in AC Islanded microGrids (ImGs) composed of Distributed Generation Units (DGUs) and loads interconnected through power lines. The presented approach enables Plug-and-Play (PnP) operations, meaning that DGUs can be added or removed without compromising the overall ImG stability. The main feature of our approach is that the proposed design algorithm is line-independent. This implies that (i) the synthesis of each local controller requires only the parameters of the corresponding DGU and not the model of power lines connecting neighboring DGUs, and (ii) whenever a new DGU is plugged in, DGUs physically coupled with it do not have to retune their regulators because of the new power line connected to them. Moreover, we formally prove that stabilizing local controllers can be always computed, independently of the electrical parameters.     A practical and open source implementation of IEC 61850-7-2 for IED monitoring applications

    A new open source mapping of IEC 61850-7-2 to web services has been defined and implemented. This work is useful for rapidly implementing user interfaces—particularly web-based interfaces—for monitoring and controlling Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) from multiple vendors. The web service mapping has been implemented using the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), with a message format in JavaScript Object Notation (JSON). This approach requires a simple and ubiquitous software stack for its implementation, which is a significant advantage over existing client-server communications mappings. The use of an open source paradigm allows for the rapid iteration and refinement of the design, implementation, and testing of the internal details of the proposed protocol stack, in a collaborative manner. These developments are of immediate interest to users of IEC 61850 and are particularly relevant to the IEC 61850 standardization process

    Optimal Power Flow with Reactive Power Compensation for Cost and Loss Minimization On Nigerian Power Grid System

    One of the concerns of power system planners is the problem of optimum cost of generation as well as loss minimization on the grid system. This issue can be addressed in a number of ways; one of such ways is the use of reactive power support (shunt capacitor compensation). This paper used the method of shunt capacitor placement for cost and transmission loss minimization on Nigerian power grid system which is a 24-bus, 330kV network interconnecting four thermal generating stations (Sapele, Delta, Afam and Egbin) and three hydro stations to various load points. Simulation in MATLAB was performed on the Nigerian 330kV transmission grid system. The technique employed was based on the optimal power flow formulations using Newton-Raphson iterative method for the load flow analysis of the grid system. The results show that when shunt capacitor was employed as the inequality constraints on the power system, there is a reduction in the total cost of generation accompanied with reduction in the total system losses with a significant improvement in the system voltage profil

    Real-time compression of IEC 61869-9 sampled value data

    Fast-acting, yet cost-effective, communications is critical for smarter grid monitoring, protection, and control. This paper demonstrates a new approach for the real-time compression of Sampled Value (SV) data based on the IEC 61869-9 recommendations. This approach applies simple compression rules, yet yields excellent compression performance---typically compressing data to less than half of the original size. This leads to a significant and beneficial reduction in encoding time (in the merging unit producing the SV data) and decoding time (at the end application), as well as the main benefit of reduced Ethernet transmission times resulting from the reduced frame size. As well as reducing the absolute bandwidth requirements in typical applications, this has system-wide benefits due to reducing Ethernet queuing delays and the consequent network jitter. The approach has been validated on a real-time platform to accurately measure all contributions to the end-to-end delay. This work will help enable low-latency and bandwidth-sensitive applications involving the SV protocol, such as phasor measurement units and wide-area protection
