    An Application Of The Rational Unified Process For Requirements Analysis

    The Rational Unified Process® (RUP)[1] is an effective implementation technique for object oriented systems development.  The RUP® approach allows for flexible process modification and a customization of artifacts to meet the needs of the particular situation.  Marriott International developed a variation of this process as its standard for its SDLC.  This process was implemented in the requirements analysis and design phases of a software project for the Ritz-Carlton subsidiary.  A context-level treatment of the RUP® metamodel produced use cases and a supplementary specification that lead to the systems analysis model development by an external vendor. [1] Rational Unified Process®, Version 2003 Copyright © 1987 – 2003.     GTA: Groupware task analysis Modeling complexity

    The task analysis methods discussed in this presentation stem from Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Ethnography (as applied for the design of Computer Supported Cooperative Work CSCW), different disciplines that often are considered conflicting approaches when applied to the same design problems. Both approaches have their strength and weakness, and an integration of them does add value to the early stages of design of cooperation technology. In order to develop an integrated method for groupware task analysis (GTA) a conceptual framework is presented that allows a systematic perspective on complex work phenomena. The framework features a triple focus, considering (a) people, (b) work, and (c) the situation. Integrating various task-modeling approaches requires vehicles for making design information explicit, for which an object oriented formalism will be suggested. GTA consists of a method and framework that have been developed during practical design exercises. Examples from some of these cases will illustrate our approach

    A System Design Framework for Project Cost Control in the Irish Construction Industry

    The construction industry is a major contributor to the Irish economy. The common denominator of the of the industry’s business is the “construction project”. Construction projects by their very nature are unique being influenced by many variables such as weather, location, design and personnel. This situation demands strong management to fulfil the cost control function. The primary aim of this project has been the illustration of a system design framework for project cost control in the Irish construction industry. This system design should be based upon a general principle identified for the design of an overall project management system. Whilst cost control is the primary focus, it is not the exclusive concern of the proposed system as this would be ignoring the very source of the industry’s problems namely, the complex interrelationships of its various components, aesthetics, structural, financial and environmental. Two main research techniques were adopted in this study, a comprehensive literature review examined recent developments and emerging technologies and a postal questionnaire surveyed construction industry professionals to establish the factors effecting cost control. The analysis of the result of this research concluded with the identification of the general principle for the design of an overall project management system. This principle was that such a system should be based on Information Management using an integrated Database structure. Having verified its suitability for the cost control subsystem the next step was the specification and design of the proposed framework. The system has been designed using object oriented methods, following formal procedures through the system analysis (specification) and system design stages. Further research is required to develop links and incorporate the latest advances in Information Technology

    An Analysis of Composability and Composition Anomalies

    The separation of concerns principle aims at decomposing a given design problem into concerns that are mapped to multiple independent software modules. The application of this principle eases the composition of the concerns and as such supports composability. Unfortunately, a clean separation (and composition of concerns) at the design level does not always imply the composability of the concerns at the implementation level. The composability might be reduced due to limitations of the implementation abstractions and composition mechanisms. The paper introduces the notion of composition anomaly to describe a general set of unexpected composition problems that arise when mapping design concerns to implementation concerns. To distinguish composition anomalies from other composition problems the requirements for composability at the design level is provided. The ideas are illustrated for a distributed newsgroup system

    Unifying Requirements and Code: an Example

    Requirements and code, in conventional software engineering wisdom, belong to entirely different worlds. Is it possible to unify these two worlds? A unified framework could help make software easier to change and reuse. To explore the feasibility of such an approach, the case study reported here takes a classic example from the requirements engineering literature and describes it using a programming language framework to express both domain and machine properties.     Iterative criteria-based approach to engineering the requirements of software development methodologies

    Software engineering endeavours are typically based on and governed by the requirements of the target software; requirements identification is therefore an integral part of software development methodologies. Similarly, engineering a software development methodology (SDM) involves the identification of the requirements of the target methodology. Methodology engineering approaches pay special attention to this issue; however, they make little use of existing methodologies as sources of insight into methodology requirements. The authors propose an iterative method for eliciting and specifying the requirements of a SDM using existing methodologies as supplementary resources. The method is performed as the analysis phase of a methodology engineering process aimed at the ultimate design and implementation of a target methodology. An initial set of requirements is first identified through analysing the characteristics of the development situation at hand and/or via delineating the general features desirable in the target methodology. These initial requirements are used as evaluation criteria; refined through iterative application to a select set of relevant methodologies. The finalised criteria highlight the qualities that the target methodology is expected to possess, and are therefore used as a basis for de. ning the final set of requirements. In an example, the authors demonstrate how the proposed elicitation process can be used for identifying the requirements of a general object-oriented SDM. Owing to its basis in knowledge gained from existing methodologies and practices, the proposed method can help methodology engineers produce a set of requirements that is not only more complete in span, but also more concrete and rigorous
